    It's cool that this exists. Would be cool to have. OTOH, I've barely scratched the surface of the free plugins, and I feel like I should exhaust those before adding more. I'm also iffy on the whole idea of needing a license or DRM to make it work, so I've avoided the paid add-ons. Thanks for trying it so I don't have to!

    There's still a lot of stuff that's really awkward and broken in the MPC App itself (especially on the sequencer side), like you said, and I'm sort of afraid that it will never be fixed and they'll just keep building these plugins etc. It's cool, I guess, but I would've loved to have seen the MPC Live being actually 'Live'. :D
    Awesome track btw, I'm actually getting inspired over here to mess around more with the MPC (which is just sitting there looking at me very accusationally). Jura is amazeballs but one can hear where they had to cut down on the emulation sound just for performance but it also gives Jura a nice flavor of it's own and I'm really loving some of the patches I came up with it. I requested from the devs that the filter saturation and drive should go up to 'stupid', to REALLY push the character of the synth and not just be subtle spice on top, but they'll probably leave it as is.
    Is it worth 150 bucks though? That's the big question. I feel like 50 would be in the actual realm.
    Also, you mentioned the 'hands-on' problem with software synths and I've been thinking about how amazing it would be to have some MIDI controller like SoundForce SFC-60 to edit what you see on the screen. It could also be possible to build a dedicated Raspberry Pi setup where one could switch the virtual control interface but still have a physical knobs and sliders. : P

      The sequencer issues are some of the main reasons I returned my MPC One and, unless they drastically change it, why I'll never go back to MPC. I had a 2000XL from 2007-2012 so I was hyped to get into it, until I actually used it. Haha.
      It's pretty absurd they're devoted so much to these plugins while neglecting functionality issues. Their rhodes/piano plugins are not top quality. Pretty sure they're a single sample layer. You can find much better sample instruments and synths than "Akai" has to offer without being trapped in their ecosystem.

    • @tom-541
      @tom-541 Рік тому +1

      @@remyvegamedia They're not a single sample layer - I think they're something like 8 or 12. You have chosen a hard or soft preset, because you can change from real / hard / soft in the instrument edit.

    • @ambidex
      @ambidex 11 місяців тому

      Can you share some of sequencer issues?
      I'm new to the MPC workflow but am trying to go [mostly] Daw-less (as in not using a computer). Having additional instrument Plugins for my MPC Live excites me a lot, but I'm not committed to the workflow yet. I was so disappointed to learn that the newer MPC systems don't use sysex at all (!!) My midi needs are pretty specific since I have a JD-Xi that I want to be able to take full advantage of without menu diving.
      I downloaded the demo to Jura last night and got sucked in for a few hours. It sounded pretty good to me. I'm no expert on the Juno but it's at least in the ballpark to me, and occupying similar space is my main need.

    • @ThatBonsaipanda
      @ThatBonsaipanda 11 місяців тому

      @@ambidex If you work in-the-box, everything's more or less dandy, but if you want to control the MPC from an external sequencer, you're entering a world of hurt.
      The internal sequencer is a bit antiquated as it was just designed for 'making beats', as in it works fine for one song per project and not doing anything super complicated, it was just meant to record your finger drumming and that's about it.
      But if you want to sequence something more complicated, say a full live show, you'll have to start hopping through hoops as the sequencer doesn't really lend itself to switching stuff live automatically. Even muting stuff is really awkward as you have to be on the page where it happens if you want it synced to the tempo etc.
      Stuff gets really icky if you want to use external sequencer. The multimode that the MPC currently has is more of a hack on top of the original sequencer instead of an actual implementation. Yes, you can trigger multiple instruments on multiple tracks at the same time, but once you send a Note OFF message, it goes to all channels - so you get this cacophony of different tracks cutting each other off.
      They are working on all these issues and in time the whole workflow will be glorious, but as an MPC Live owner since 2018, I've been waiting for those magical fixes for a while now and it doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.
      __
      For full SYSEX control and multiple synth live performance, I would probably look at the Hapax sequencer or Deluge, but even those bring new challenges and limitations.

    • @ambidex
      @ambidex 11 місяців тому +1

      @@ThatBonsaipanda thanks. I'm learning how abysmal the sequencing is with other hardware unfortunately. I'm trying very hard to stay Dawless (in the sense of not on a PC) and really hoped this MPC live would save me. I'm stubborn though and will still see what I can accomplish.
      I love CME's MIDI products and they've recently launched some great MIDI filtering and mapping solutions. The cheapest is available in the U2Midi Pro and the U6Midi Pro is more robust. They allow you to block a lot of data from getting passed in certain directions. This might help a bit... hopefully.
      Regardling Hapax or Deluge, I"m such a cheapskate those aren't even near my realm of access. I do however have an old Yamaha QX5fd with a Flash drive floppy emulator. It might be able to accomplish some of this (in a very arcane way).

    Helpful video Gabe. I always appreciate your content even though you come from a very different type of experience.
    Btw, we did know back then that many sounds that were trying to emulate physical instruments, such as brass, didn't sound like what they were aiming at, especially outside of FM. Imho, It really wasn't until the early Rompler days of the late 80s that things sounded remotely accurate. Other forms of sound generation have intruded since then, and waveform utililization helped a ton with accuracy in synthesis.
    Not that any of that matters at this point. Thanks for the vid!

    Honestly as some one who's synth focused the more I talk to modern MPC owner the more I'm glad I ended up going for a second hand MC-707 over the MPC One. I'm more synth focused than the MPC line is out of the box, and then there's all the issues I keep hearing about the MPC line up all the time more and more. At least my MC-707 I can count on one hand how many times it's crashed on me in nearly 6 months of fairly frequent and heavy use, 3 times only 3 times and one of those was trigger by power issues from a brownout. Honestly I'm kind of annoyed that the new MPC line has so many issues when I dealt with an older model several years ago it was a lovely experience when I had it on lone from some one else.

    • @remyvegamedia

      Yeah, MPC continues to go downhill on the organization and orderliness of their software. Meanwhile they're producing underwhelming, overpriced plugins. I had an MPC 2000XL from 2007-2013. I got an MPC One last year and I was completely unimpressed with the fact that they didn't upgrade the SLOWEST and most unintuitive aspects of the original MPC "workflow" and just added a bunch of bells and whistles on top of that method. They tried to blend DAW insert FX and piano roll with an outdated sequencing interface. I really do think this happened as a result of "Akai" (InMusic) pushing out Roger Linn.
      I'd get almost anything before a modern MPC after a year plus of trying the Akai Force, MPC One, then trying MPC software with a controller, and using my friend's MPC One AGAIN haha.

    Nice. Thanks for this 'run-down.' I have a hard time paying this much money for something like this, because i'm not a hardcore user of the MPC. As an 'occasional/hobbyist,' it feels very 'aggressive' of Akai. I understand that developing new features costs money. However, some companies do that as a means of continually building its customer base by enticing new buyers with the larger feature sets. A 'simple' synth like this could have been a free upgrade-like a company like Kemper provides its base. If not free, i would suggest that selling it for $39 might attract many times more buyers than even at a $79 occasional sale price. Personally, i could jump at < $40 as an impulse, even if i weren't sure i was going to rely on it, but at above that price, i need to know i'm going to use the thing. And it's not really about *having* the money. I can afford it either way. But, there is a definite mental barrier that all consumers have and i kinda think Akai is missing an opportunity by pricing a large number of users out of their 'add-ons.'

    • @robinr22
      @robinr22 Рік тому +1

      My guess is that they'll have a sale at some point and really cut the price for a bit - that way, they still get all the full price sales from everyone who'll pay that and still cash in with the price conscious at a later date.

I would imagine akai dev team just driving 2005 Ford focuses while hating every minute of their job, while air guys all blinging to the job on their teslas and lambos to give us new plug-ins (or they just ride the bus / bike / walk as most germans do). So one team is productive and generates income , and not being communist I'm sure at least part of the revenue goes back as bonuses etc. While akai firmware team has no means of generating income but have 100x more work to do.

      You should never depend on any hardware or software unsaved. Save often. Backup files often. I save my work after every change I make. 100% worth it in my book. I back up my projects across MPCs and computers occasionally.
      If you got pretty far into a project without saving, I don’t know what to say. You live dangerously.
      You should read the manual. MPCs have auto save. It slows up the interface so I keep it off and save after entering a recording or after a change. I would prefer to control where my projects save. I know when I did something important to document and when I’m just messing around.

    29.99 not a cent more. They are smoking crack for posting that price. TAL has one of the best Juno emulations out and its 1/3 of what they are asking. Crap like this is why I will probably never buy anything from that company, plenty of options out there these days so you try to rip off your customer base they can easily go somewhere else.

      It’s about “in the box” and honestly it’s pretty darn good at it

      I see where you're coming from but the fact that you have a pretty good emulation right there at all times in a MPC is pretty kickass to me. I think it's worth it but I also respect your perspective

      Jura is really top notch. In dynamics, depth, puchiness. What is better with the TAL-emulation in your ears? I also of course respect your point of view, but I just love Jura. Now updated yesterday too.
      I got it for a bargain price though.
