After this last week I'm convinced that tomato seeds are indestructible. I have a group of seed packs that I purchased back in 2008 that I'm trying to get rid of to free up space. Among those were about 30 Rutgers tomato seeds. Now these seeds were kept dry and dark... but our house flooded last summer and they ran heat producing dryers which braught the house temps up to 133°F for 3 weeks... and these seeds went thru that trauma plus they're 15 years old. But we give them a chance... so I planted 15 each in two 4" pots ... I have 30 plants. I don't want 30 plants..lol. I don't have the space to transplant 30 tomato plants! So... ALL my neighbors are getting tomato plants for Mother's Day this year. Indestructible!

Massive respect to this guy. Been watching his vids for years and made many changes in my world. Thank you. Also, every single tomato seed I've ordered from MIGardener has sprouted.

When the seeds are older I plant extra. Some all germinate and for some the rate goes down. I would like to learn what seeds keep a higher germination rate.

Walmart has some pretty hanging baskets for $26. Too expensive for me. Can I just plant seeds in a hanging basket and make my own?

Absolutely! My daughter got married last May and I created all the flower displays for the wedding and ceremony. This year I've planted "salad baskets" in the same baskets used at her wedding. I found a trailing yellow pear tomato to hang off the edges and planted bunching onions in the center, Nastursiums, and radishes... I have my lettuces growing in Greenstalks. The formula is easy... tall/spikes in the center, bushy alternating with trailing around the edges. My daughter's wedding baskets had snapdragons in the center, trailing petunias, creeping Jenny, and impatience around the side.. just remember to match their watering and sun requirements to the place you want to display them. Good luck!

    Hi there,
Question. Which plant - from kitchen waste - can I grow in water in order to spruce up the living room? I know for instance that a sweet potato or a pineapple look really cool. Are there any other greens that make exceptionally cool looking plants? I already have an avocado tree that's larger than me in front of a window. Thanks in advance! Greetings from the Netherlands.

Thank you for the clarifications on the differences of seedlings.
I am growing giant crimson tomatoes. Out of the 5 seeds in my pack, four have germinated and are looking great. I am giving them a little extra TLC considering that they are rare.🍅👍🏻😀

It is a drywall taping knife used to apply joint compound on the seams of drywall. It can be found in the painting department of Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, etc.

Can I suggest a method without the use of tools? I tap my trays on a hard surface... one good drop and it compacts and levels out my seed start mix. I learned it temping at a large commercial grow operation. Super quick and easy... leaves about a half inch space to top the seeds with soil/pearlite if needed. I'm not sure why Luke isn't using this method. Give it a shot... maybe save a few bucks? 🙏💚

I just planted 20 varieties of peppers, for some of my ornamental/wild pepper varieties I'll plant more than one per cell because the germination rate is so much lower than typical harvested peppers.
I have some rarer varieties from South America that don't germinate super well and take a lot longer than typical capuscum annum or chinense. So having more than one seed per cell definitely helps in those circumstances.

We started green peppers yesterday again inside under a grow light, because some didn't germinate. Tomatoes we winter sowed a few weeks ago in milkjugs in our breezeway that gets strong afternoon sun. We really packed a lot of seeds in there last years and had a lot of plants. Starting now makes sense, because if they get too big and roots get tangled, they don't grow anymore. The size of the container lets them get as big as they can. Man, with a greenhouse you could plant in larger cells and no potting again to a bigger container. So much fun and how gardening can help everyone this year especially. Every little bit helps. We use seeds from produce bought in the store if we can't find those seeds. Helps with stress levels to garden too. Use a little compost under the plant and loosen the soil first. It does not take a lot of money start a garden. Just try it. You might enjoy it 😊

I bought Dr.Earths organic fertilizer 4-6-3. It instructs for measuring soil/fertilizer for 5 gal. What can I do for my peppers I've already potted up???????

Experience is the point. How many seeds to put in a cell? As many as you want! But do you really want to have to kill off a bunch of plants because only one can grow in a cell?
All seedling transplant better with less root disturbance (even onions), so I get the right size cell tray and plant one seed per cell.

How tall should my tomato seedlings be before I up-pot them? I used the peat pods and chose 4 different tomato seeds to test. I plnted Fireworks,Moneymaker, Large Red Cherry and Super Nova Tomatoes. I planted 2 seeds in each pod and got 100% germination! My plants are close to 3" tall right now and have their second set of leaves. I'm in North Texas, zone 8A. I've been putting my tray out in the sun during the day and bringing it back in the house at night.

I'm curious what happens if no thinning is done when planting.?
First time starting from seed and most my pots ( 3 or 4 inch ) have 3 or more seeds probably with the exception of 1 flower type. 80% are sprouted and healthy.
Seeds : basil, tomatoes, sunflowers, violas, and other great seed from MiGardener :)

Great tutorial! I make all kinds of mistakes with the process of seed-starting, and will likely continue to make them due to space/time limitations, impatience, over-enthusiasm, and the joy of personal experimentation. But at least now I know why the outcomes of these efforts are so often less than ideal. 😅

Does separating the seedlings work for leeks as well as onions?
I have a bunch or leeks multi-sown in a single large sized tray {about 100 leek seedlings} I'm wondering of I should separate the leeks into 'clumps' and plant them that way, or should I separate each individual plant one at a time with it's roots and then plant them? Hope that makes sense.

Maybe because I am new to seed starting and heardany people say thinning is toally ok. Or because I am not planting a tray of each thing, but maybe only 2 or 3 of each. I put 2-3 seeds in each cell and thin down to 1 plant per. Except that one thing where I got 5 seeds and they were so so pricey I did one per and prayed over each one on the daily. 😂
