I was on this run in May 1994, and agreed, certainly a great rail journey. The video is great, but what you don't necessarily see is the Irish Sea off to the right, although you can see some tides coming in. The landscape also has some wonderful, deep greens, which really brings home that this is indeed The Emerald Isle.
qbitz08. Thank you for your comment it was a very foggey morning at the start but it cleared up later at Malahide all you could see way a few feet on front of the locomotive.
I have a VHS video of myself driving a NIR set from Dublin to Belfast, taken by a chap wbo i think was a clerk in Lisburn Station, can't remember his name but he looked like the RUC Chief Constable Sir Hugh Annesley . The Set was caught on the wrong side following a bomb scare... Thing is, I've no idea how to go about getting it uploaded...
Great video. The working conditions were pretty bad driving on those tracks in a loco which appears to have no suspension, it's a wonder it stayed on the rails. Can't imagine any of those HST drivers in GB putting up with that shaking and noise.
It's a long time ago really and the Dublin Belfast line has always been neglected in Ireland over Irish rails premier route, Dublin to Cork. Safety tends to be better than the UK however, we've luckily not had any very bad accidents in a long time. ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/File:Number_of_persons_killed_in_railway_accidents,_2014-2015.png
Great video Gerry. I travelled those (then upgraded) tracks a lot between 1996 and 2001, far too often grinding to a halt by the Kilwilkie Estate in Lurgan. I'd love to know what the 121 pair were up to at the old Portadown station.
Martin Bitter . Hi Martin I used a wide angle lens which wasn't compatible with the camera. When I was recording it looked fine through the view finder , but on playback I noticed the circle.
@gerryconmy Really these system is unacceptable today with modern HST in europe and HS1 yes theve put better trains on but thd enterprise is clapped out there needs to be electrifying lines from B to D and the latest fastest trains I dog think a HS line will built as anything does the irish peasants. 😮
1996 was my first run on that line in NIR stock. One of Europe's great railway journeys

I worked this route in the dining car twice a day from 1978 until 1982, don't think it did much for my joints.

The junction at 32.50 is the line to Navan now served by the Tara mines trains

@@gerryconmywhere is great Victoria street ?
Was this recorded on a proper 3 hour VHS tape or was this recorded on multiple VHS-C or Video8 cassettes?
Hi it was recorded on Video 8 cassette and transferred to VHS tape.
@@gerryconmy Thanks for the info. Even though its a transfer from one format to another, it looks extremely well in my opinion.
smashing video btw.
What junction was that at 32:50 ?
Tara. Frieght line to Navan. Still open.
when did the electric lines for the dart to malahide get erected
Andrew Harman .I would say 1999 to 2000.

still wonderful to have this historic footage. thank you
what's that weird click clacking noise? not the sound of the train on the tracks. more like a demented spoon player
The clicking or ticking noise is the speedometer and nornal on all mechanical speedo on locomotives
Ah! Thanks!

At what point does the train cross the ROI-NI border?
Between Dundalk and Newary at the 59.5 mile post.
