- Aggretsuko, Nekopara, Beastars, BNA, is it just me or are we in a furry boom? Now’s a great time to be a fan of all things anthropomorphic, but there’s been a long history of anthro characters, from Inuyasha to Digimon. Even Western properties like Disney’s Robinhood and Zootopia embrace anthro characters.

I'm a small lady bodied person and I thought haru being permiscouis was brilliant and something I relate to that I didn't expect to be depicted in media let alone an anapromorphic anime- I definitely get treated like a dumb baby sometimes which is jarring since I'm responsible and intelligent- the lack of support made me realize guys care about what you think of them and are a lot nicer when they want to hook up with you. It's not a healthy solution to a societal problem, but it's a way haru learned to cope with her environment. People who think it's "low hanging fruit" must not have actually paid attention to the series. It's really accurate and nuanced.

On the opposite end of this type of relationship, I had to be trained (yes, fully intended) that just because your partner is small or short they don't need (or want) to be "protected", whatever that means to you. So yeah to Haru and finding a way to find agency for her life.

I work a furry con as security and I appreciate the community, and you guys covered the spectrum perfectly. Every fandom and culture has it's spectrum of who appreciates the fandom how they appreciate it. And remember Furries define themselves as "Enjoying anthropomorphic and zoomorphic characters and art." That's literally it.

I am pretty sure Disney made most of the modern furries. The Disney Afternoon cartoon block had a song/music video called "No Pants Dance" that would show during commercial breaks that sung about how so many characters didn't wear pants.

Yeah.
There are many examples of it in Disney. I just gave the first example I could think of.
The videogame industry did have a good part is furry-making too. Look at the number of mascott and anthro characters there were back then. They were everywhere since standing out was a matter of basic shapes and a brunch of pixels. Nowdays, with higher resolution and memory capapbilities, we can afford a world of human NPCs all looking different, but back then...it was another story.

4:08 I think it should also be noted that "furry" is rather new. Animal characters sure aren't, but the furry fandom and the word furry is. It started sometime in the 80s and like most fandoms took some time to grow. Now, furry is a decently common term. I'm positive that if Disney's robin hood had come out today people would be calling it a furry movie, but back then they where just a movie or a show with animal characters.
It's not a new thing, it just got more organized and received an "official" label around that time.

I loved Polar Bear's Cafe, so I'm glad you mentioned that. And Tokoyami was my the first cosplay I did with a mask, which kinda got me into making fursuits... I'm working on a Lucario now. I haven't had the time to watch Beastars yet, but it looks interesting.

This is a dumb knit pick, but I kinda hate Louis’ design. He looks like a big eyed dog with antlers. That is not what a deer’s face looks like. The nose, mouth and teeth are especially egregious. The rest of the animals are pretty accurate and easy to identify their species and even breed, he is the exception. Seriously why does he look so weird?

Imporbable Spree I haven’t read the manga, but based on some cursory googling, Melon is SUPPOSED to be a hybrid and therefore looks like a mish mash of the two species. Louis, on the other hand, is supposed to be 100 percent red deer. He does not look like a red deer at all. Correct me if I’m wrong
I do wonder about this often, but a lot of the times I see Kemonomimi characters, they have animal ears, but at the same time, they also have human ears. Why do a lot of these types of characters have human ears that go along side their animal ears? And I’m not talking about the characters who wear fake ears, I mean the ones who have legit animal ears.

Disney's 1973 Robin Hood slaps so hard. One of my favorites of all time! However, I don't like the fact that you so nonchalantly added: Nina transformed into a dog chimera(that flooded me with so many emotions. the cringe-hurt was real man).
I like that you acknowledge that kemonomimi is not enough deep in furry scale. I do say that a lots of furry in the fandom thinks that kemonomimi is seperate from furry and they had their own fandom. And same statement can be said to the people from kemonomimi fandom. While people from both fandom can intersect, it should be considered when discussing furries only anthro animals character is used as an example not just girl with cat ears. Its just to avoid confusion about identifying each fandoms. Also btw, thank you so much you accepting the furry fandom. I appriciated it.
Beastars is amazing. I'm dying for a second season,the anime is amazing. The story and character development so far as completely drawn me in.
And nekopara is well...nekopara so nothing special. I definitely wouldn't call it a good anime
Nekopara is just a weak furry media full of fan service and super lewd stuffs (especially in the original version)

A lot of the wider societal concepts will become explained with future events. The manga goes into a lot of detail on certain things. If you haven’t already I would recommend reading Beastars’ manga.

I am a furry and it was Disney's Robin Hood that did it for me. I grew up in the 70s and At the time I did not know what a furry was it was not till around 2008 that I found the fandom. Anyway great vid and thank you for treating the subject with respect. people tend to mock what they don't understand or think is weird and sometimes I think that it is a cooping mechanism. We all have something another wont or cant understand so to each there own.

I find is so strange that I’m a furry and my first cosplay was Atsushi Nakajima and he’s a Weretiger (Tiger Hybrid) I’m not sure if Bungo Stray Dogs is considered a furry anime. But then again if he wasn’t a Weretiger I still freaking love him. Precious baby boy.
