As a railwayman of thirty years I can see that you had the same problem that we had on British Rail. It came in the shape of a Balloon head called Dr Beeching,he did more damage to the railway,in the form of line closures than the Luftwaffe.

Beeching was a figurehead. The real evil was Lord Latham, who also destroyed all trolleybus and all but one tram networks in the UK. All because his family owned an asphalt company.

That’s my dad on the left at 1:46. He’s in his mid-70s now and was about 16/17 years old in this.

Its sad to see what we had, even if the lines had to close the government did absolutely nothing to preserve any of the trains or the track beds for a heritage walkway.

I understand that Todd Andrews justified closing down the Harcourt Street line from Dun Laoghaire to Harcourt Street (now largely occupied by the Luas Green Line) by claiming it was only used by Protestants and solicitors. However, I may be mistaken in my recollection, so would welcome any corrections if appropriate.

The last train was the one before. No video/narration needed, the statement alone has to be and could only be Irish. Forward March 8/2022. Think we'll try steam again oil is to expensive.

There was a delegation to Lenster house when Desi OMallay was minister for transport. They demanded that the Limerick line should remain open, when asked how they travelled to Dublin, there reply was Classically Irish,
    By Car of Course.

Nice clip. Thank you for sharing. Why is embedding disabled though? More people would see it if embedding was enabled. P.S. I've given 5 stars :-)

"CIE cancelled the last train, so the last train was actually the one before!"
Umm, surely the last train was still the last train, though not the one that it should have been.

They would love to see a cycle track along every rail line. Athlone to Mullingar will never open again. Galway to Clifden will never open again. Oh forget it. None of them will ever open again. Permanent way mostly sold off for a song. Beautiful latticed bridge over the Corrib sold for shillings

Closed railway lines will gradually be restored & reopened in not to distant future.

Not a hope. They are reluctant or refuse to even reopen disused railway stations on mainline. Iariann Rod would be happier with no stations

@@themadfarmer5207 We need to stop Car Accidents, Road Deaths, Traffic Jams & Pollution as 24 hour trains in the summer months & limited St. Stephen's Day trains too.
