I just bought a used 749 and your example helped me so much. The drum stuck on and the brake lever was seized and not moving freely. It was good to learn how to free those up. I ended up putting the lever in a vise and with penetrating oil managed to tap it back and forth until it broke free. It took about 30 minutes to work in enough oil to get it moving freely again. The needle-nose pliers and screwdriver example was exactly what was needed to get those springs back into place (and I still learned some new swear words). Great job!
I have just taken delivery of a 740 in the UK and interestingly they have added a compression spring over the cable to act as a return spring for the brake actuation arm so hopefully that will reduce the chances of the brakes becoming stuck on. The only issue I have with this is that the springs used seem unnecessarily strong and there is an initial 6kgf pull required on the brake lever to overcome them. I'm going to fit some lighter springs to see how that feels.
Just went through steering brakes stuck on, pulled the wheels, unbolted the linkage bolt to actuator lever used a soft blow hammer to center the frozen brake actuator, removed drum, brake, springs and shoes, actuator was froze in backing plate it’s sold as a unit so a lot of penetrating oil and a hammer to free it, bad design.
Hi there. I have a 750. I did your procedure here and found the inside of the drum caked in oil. Axes seal. Do you have any videos on how to fix that? thank you
Thank you. I've just gotten the brake actuator lever unstuck on my 948. Now, what do you lubricate it with to lessen the chance of it getting stuck again?
I don't think it's so much a matter of lubricating it, but keeping it corrosion free. Douse it with something like Krud Kutter to neutralize the rust, then squirt in grease (lithium?) from a can with a straw. Now keep it out of the weather and you should be good.
Very useful video for the project I had for today. One improvement would be to apply anti-seize to the backing plate bolts on reassembly. I have had my 850 tractor for twenty one years, since new. When I pulled the backing plate screws they had evidence of corrosion. This is the first time I have had the brakes fully apart to try to get them functional again. Lot of working and flushing with LPS2 and what seemed like they should work now. Improved yes fully functional, maybe. As for the thin wall socket to access the stub axle nuts. My 13mm 3/8 drive Proto has too much wall thickness. I suspect a Snap-On socket is required.
