    🙋‍♀️ I’m curious on what you think you might of done had you found minimalism earlier. You said you wouldn’t have chosen nurse?

    • @JanellKristina
      @JanellKristina  6 років тому +99

      Something more creative like photography, videography, or script writing. I use to draw comics and make videos with my best childhood friend all the time. I enjoyed them a lot when I was younger but I grew up in a financial struggle and wanted the security of a career at the time. Choosing nursing was based a lot in fear.

      You are really young and it's never to late...work on your passions one hour a day...be the end of the year that's 365 hours dedicated to your passion or passions...take it from me I'm 47 and just got my masters and after two long so called relationships and giving up a lot of my dreams...for the first time I'm painting, and doing the things I love...my daughter is 21 and I encourage her to follow her dreams...blessings

      I just graduated nursing school in June, but I realized I also did it out of fear. And also due to pressure from my parents wanting me to study something concrete, since they were paying for my school. Now I don't know what do do, because I've finally accepted that nursing is really not for me; that hospitals make me queasy and sad and that the impact I want to have on the world is so much greater, and that it's related to globalization and the environment. I set my dreams aside to try to fit in the box of our current society, namely making money to pay rent to have a nice place and raise a family, blah bah blah, and now realize I so don't want to be in that box. Any advice of what I can do from here?

    Hola!! I am a minimalist also, and I love my life. I switched from Gucci to jeans and t-shirts😂. I feel so free, no debt and I travel more and enjoy the best of foods now that I have more funds. Thanks for your awesome video.

    Love this. What’s weird is I was just thinking about wanting to get rid of a ton of my stuff because I feel like “stuff” is suffocating me. I hadn’t looked up anything about minimalism on here but it was recommended to me ??
    Crazyy. Lol

      Same!! I wasn't really looking for this but it came as a recommendation I had been watching videos for declutering and cleaning up space and this just showed up and I am so happy to have found it as well :D watching all her videos and making a list of all the things I need to pay attention to really which are a lot! LOL I might not become a minimalist but these tips help a lot for people like me who like to hoard stuff and whatnot. Also I know I just found this as well but it seems to have been life changing for her I cannot say it will be the same in my case but I hope it helps somehow at least to get my ideas in order.

      Still wish I found it sooner and thank you!

      It's ok to question things. However, my hope is that you get not just the answer that you desire but the real answer to those questions. And who else can we find them but to the one who created us, God. Hear from Him personally. Have a personal quest. Seek and you shall find.
      I too have been on that road. I thought, satisfaction is found on the things i owned, the relationship i had, the talents, goals etc. But it was all wrong. I still felt empty with all that. Now i don't have much things, not in a relationship either but i am at peace, i am content and intentional in the things i do etc. And it's all because i have found The answer, Jesus.

    I love your video. You're such an inspiration. The title is perfect! I've been a minimalist for 2 years. I've slowly gotten rid of a lot of my stuff. I have 2 video games, 5 books (game of thrones- all used), and maybe 15 dvds (movies & shows). I have 1 drawer of pjs, 1 drawer of underwear and everything else, winter and summer clothing, is all hung up. I've used up most of my toiletries and I'm trying to get down to the basics. I have 3 purses: 1 nice one for work, one small cross-shoulder bag for every day, and a nice clutch for going out. When I think about how much crap I used to have and spent my money on... it makes me sick. I had so much makeup, bath and body works junk, more makeup, body wash that I'm still trying to use up, books I didn't read, movies I bought and never watched.
    I'm finally about to sell all my Harry Potter books after contemplating it for a while. I just finished book 3 for the 10th time. After I sell all 7, if I want to read them again, I'll just go to the library, no big deal. :)

      @JanellKristina  6 років тому +8

      Veruca Salt yess!!! It took me a few years to use up all the extra stuff I hoarded like body wash. Now I’m way more mindful of what I buy and spend on. Congrats!

      So cool, so inspiring! Four months ago, I had reduced my books to 54 and it still felt like too much. (I know you understand that need for less.) I went to the library and didn't let myself leave until I had renewed my account and figured out all the ins and outs of e-book checkouts. I knew I wouldn't get it done otherwise. I came out of the library an hour later and knew exactly which books I owned that I could give away because they were library ebooks. Took those to a Little Free Library box near me. Library ebooks totally transformed my reading and my minimalism. I can look like I am on my phone when in reality, I am reading my latest book and transported to another world. Possessions are overrated.

    Thank you for your raw honesty and authenticity. Love your videos. Am a new subscriber. Minimalism is a continuing journey for me. Thought that I didn't really have that much stuff, compared to other people. Decluttered, and went through my bedroom, bathroom, laundry, pantry, linen cupboard and kitchen this morning. Questioned the value of all my things, and only kept what I use and need. Took me 5 hours, 2 car trips to the charity bin, and 6 walking trips to the rubbish bin. And about 30 trips up and down 4 flights of stairs. And oh, the personal satisfaction and pride that I have now. My possessions don't own me, or take up unnecessary room in my home or life. Absolutely love it! Thank you for unknowingly being part of my motivation and inspiration! Much love xo

    A wonderful video again. I really really liked this. I think I was always a minimalist but never knew there was a word for it. For the past 5yrs I slowly but surely got rid of stuff in my bedroom and now I do my best to keep it clutter free. I started a new thing where every December I go around my room and get rid of everything I didn't use or feel like serves me no purpose. I agree with you that getting rid of physical stuff also in a way forces you to get of other things in other areas of your life.

    Great summary of what it means to be a minimalist.
    Minimalism for me is a framework for questioning every habit or attachment. It helps me identify the things that add to my well-being and development so I can give them a prominent place in my life; then I simply let the rest go.
    I have been drawn to minimalist architecture and minimalist living for as long as I can remember, but I didn't start practising it in any meaningful way until the failure of my first marriage, over 7 years ago. Once I found myself alone, with full control over my finances and the items I chose to keep, I found that the old adage of "less is more", really rang true for me. I felt lighter, freer and the things I added to my life afterwards had much more meaning. In short, I started to discover what had meaning to *me*.
    That went so well until 2 years in I got into another relationship, bought a couch and made so many adjustments and compromises that I pretty much lost myself to fit in with that person. Worse still, I ended up marrying that person and after the inevitable break down of that bad relationship, I had a huge crisis of identity. But slowly and surely I've come back to question the reasons for that habit and attachment; minimalism applies everywhere, not just in the items you keep, the activities you choose or the people you mix with; it even applies to how you treat your own thoughts.

    I've been practicing this on and off. My job is in the media, and sometimes it requires people not to dress simple... Also recently I tried to limit use of facebook, which also clears up a lot of free time for me from looking at what people are wearing and buying. Anyway, I'm glad I found your channel. I agree with you that minimalism is about living green too! People talk a lot about going green when the first thing they can do is try to consume less stuff that they don't need.

    I think a good title would be "What Minimalism Taught Me", but this is your channel and whatever you have as a title is perfectly fine. I was thinking about what you said about how minimalism also led you to think about your friendships and whether you wanted them in your life. I was always the type of person who hoarded friends. If you spoke or smiled at me, you were my friend. I would try to keep friendships going, but after awhile I realized that friendships are a two-way street. One lady I used to work with got a little offended when I introduced her as an ex-coworker instead of friend. I know now that, in my life at least, it requires more than a pulse to be my friend. Thanks for bringing out that perspective.

    I’ve met some “travel nurses.” They work in poverty areas. One of them lives in a van/camper and has a dog. She puts her dog in daycare when she’s working. She sleeps in the hospital parking lot, with permission. Work outs and showers in the hospital. The other one lives in a studio apartment. Both sound nice for a single, young person. There’s school nurses who get the school breaks, longer vacations and job security. Also, it’s possible to pursue filmmaking on the side. It might be a fun stress relief for you, instead of worrying about money. Best wishes.

    You should be a travel nurse!!! My husband is a travel nurse until he's done with grad school (2 1/2 more years to go....). We get to travel all over and choose where we want to go (so we don't feel tied down) and he makes twice as much money (not that money is the most important thing but it's nice because we can go on so many adventures and have so many experiences). It's just an option :)

    Just wanted to add... after being a nurse for several years although I'm thankful for the flexibility the career gave me, I was never fully happy and moved around in my career a lot. My original passion was in art and design, but I was advised to pursue nursing (I did have an interest in also) and indulge in my original passions on the side. It is possible to do both and be happy. However, you have to make that decision for yourself. Nursing can be rough, but also rewarding when helping people. If you need the money, for now you can just find an area of nursing that's tolerable for you or work part time/per diem until you are able to support in something you enjoy more. It's always good to keep your license so you have a plan B if you ever need it.

    Yess, Identity! That's something I learned about in hard ways. If we attach our identity to certain things, roles or other impermanent things, we are setting ourselves up for a major fall because that thing mightn't last. I was so lost and down when I had to quit college as I was so sure I was going to be a health professional and that would be the start of my life. I learned a lot of lessons. I read a book by an old psychiatrist who said basically that, we need to stop defining ourselves by our jobs and roles because it can have devastating consequences. And it's been visible in my country when the 2008 recession hit, lots of men in construction lost their jobs and their identity with it and had also attached their identity to the role of being the provider for their partner and children so they felt like they were failures of men and so many of them became depressed and even killed themselves.
    It doesn't necessarily require minimalism to learn that identity lesson but I can definitely see how it can teach that concept of a sort of acceptance and content detachment and help you find your true identity.
    The more of your videos I watch, the more I think wow girl you speak my language! I love how you recognise that minimalism isn't just about stuff and that it's ok to have things that are congruent with who you are, what you like and living with intention. So many minimalists on UA-cam seem to be about austerity and disposal which kinda put me off because the idea of "just get rid of it and buy a new one when you move instead of keeping the one you have" is not kind to the environment. There's a balance needed if we want to reduce our harmful environmental impact and I keep stuff in storage because I know someone at some time will likely have a use for it but I am inspired by some of the other principles of minimalism. You have more balance, I feel, than many others out there and I love your personality too! 😃

    In the UK, a least, being a nurse lets you travel a lot. You can volunteer or work overseas in lots of places for lots of different kinds of organisations (charities as well as healthcare providers). Maybe not such a bad choice.

    Love this! 💕 I got rid of a lot of stuff last year while pregnant with my second child. I found myself being overwhelmed by kid stuff and didn't want my kids to wind up having a million toys. Fast forward a year, thinking of Christmas and my daughters birthday and falling into old habits. I am craving "stuff." 🙈😅 I do want to be mindful and less wasteful and yet I'm not sure how to marry that with birthdays and celebrations where one typically gives or receives gifts. Also, I like "stuff." I just don't want to buy junk or disposable gifts. I don't want to end up being overwhelmed. If I'm honest my kids have enough, toys are not a necessity and I probably have too many to be considered a minimalist. Lol. Long post. 😂

    • @JanellKristina
      @JanellKristina  6 років тому +3

      I usually find when I am craving stuff it's because something else in my life needs attention, when I feel trapped I use retail therapy when I really need a little adventure/break from day to day life. Maybe it's something similar? But props to you for the parenting skills, excess toys don't make happier babies! Thank you for watching!

      Natural Vegan Mom if you still want to give your kids gifts, give them the gift of experiences instead of things. ☺ Take them to an amusement park, or the beach, or a fair. Coming from a teenager, I can tell you that I remember my family's trips to a yearly festival near my house much more fondly and vividly than I remember playing with my 12th My Little Pony doll.

    I love this video (to be fair, I love all of your videos haha!)
    I've got to ask--what made you decide you wanted to be a nurse? I am also a nurse right now but am going through what I would consider an identity crisis. I don't know if it's what I want to do for the rest of my life, but at the same time, I'm scared to leave. Ya feel? Minimalism has totally allowed me to see the value in other things in life.
    I see value in nursing, but I also see the trap inside of moving up constantly.

      Yarrow Joy I wanted to help people, learn about the body, have a stable career where I could always find a job. It’s different that what I expected. Not all in bad ways, I just wish there was a bigger focus on prevention and wellness. And I totally feel you! Don’t feel like you have to climb a ladder, nurse the way you want to nurse.
