I just began building my Billing Calypso a few weeks ago and am so happy I found this video. . This video will be like gold in seeing the order of assembly. The instructions are not what I am used to, only have diagrams with no advice and have no printed words. I think you did a wonderful job. The brushed hull looks much more like a wooden hull which Calypso was! If somebody used spray paint, it would look like a fiberglass hull. Thanks again.
Very nice job. You can be extremely proud of this model. I've been building models of everything for 69 years and applaud your work on this project. The use of real wood requires a lot of sanding sealer to fill in the grain and on open deck grain, hand painting looks like real mahogany or teak. It was a working ship and I can tell you real ships got lots of coats of paint and chip covers. I like what you did, screw the naysayers; ask to see some pics of their work. A word of advice, If you must use real string for rigging, pull it thru beeswax a few times to make it less fuzzy. My Revell Cutty Sark with full standing and running rigging is 65 tears old now and still looks good. (80 y/o who took his fathers advice then).
I watched probably every episode back in the day ... He used to preach the importance of the the ecology of the sea and how important it was to life above and below the waves . The irony is the ocean has been in a steady continuous decline since his last episode was aired... God help us 😞
Me Too. I was up in Alaska in the late 60's and walked down to the harbor @ Anchorage...The Calypso was moored there, provisioning for a voyage up into arctic waters where they made a documentary...just as I got there they were casting off and I got to free up one of the lines and toss it to a crewman. They all had their red beret's and Captain Jacques was in the wheelhouse. They thanked me and sailed away. It felt good.
Very nice build I built one 20 years ago full RC model twin motors fitted a motor under the helicopter so blades spin fitted a geared servo to make crane swing out had to change it to a single rudder for descent turn circle still running today happy building
Super work, though I can't believe you pained all of those lovely brass components, even if the colours were more authentic. Calypso sure was a ship with everything. JC lived the dream. Today we have Greta Thunberg...
Beautiful memories, TY. Tv in the 70's & the love for Flight & the lil Hughes 300 started. Playground was the Fla Keys & another challange completed , Scuba. Sadly our Reefs have changed & vislybly not the same.
Beautiful job. Outstanding attention to detail. Recently I bought this model and I'm ready to start building it. What type of adhesives did you use? Wood to wood is not a problem for me, but plastic to wood might be tricky? I was thinking either 2-part epoxy or white glue, but I'd appreciate your input. Thank you.
Thank you. I have used an ordinary super glue( 1 second superglue ).Can be bought in almost any store. Easy to use and do not make a mess. I wish you a great build😀
Hello, fantastic ! ...I have just start this boat, your video for sure will help me a lot !...Do you know how many hours have you spend to realize it ?.....best regards from France (near to Cognac). Alain
@@alainvacher6440 Thank you very much🤗. It is hard to say how many hours but my guess will be around 200. I hope you will enjoy the build as much as i did. It is a very beautiful ship. Have fun😉
Really a nice model. Well Done. I remember it from tv in my childhood. I have been thinking about building it myself. You never made it Rc-controlled? Greetings from Sweden
It's a shame the real thing is in jeopardy, it was taken to a boat yard and taken apart to refurbish and restore, but apparently they ran out of money and couldn't pay the bills. Last I read in the twenty teens, the ship yard was threatening to sell off the boat if they didn't pay the cash they owed. I have no idea what happened, it's almost disappeared and there is very little information on it. Wouldn't it be cool to restore it to a working science vessel again? Oh well at least you have the model.
all that money on a large model and he brush painted the hull, first red and, then black... you can see every brush mark in the paint job. on any surface, that big it is best to spray paint or airbrush the paint job. it would give the model a more realistic look and not a "crafted" look
Have to agree. This kit looks like one of the plastic versions and not a Billings kit. Too much gloss paint and varnish and some parts not even painted at all like the stern ladder. I know as I’m building the same kit and that ladder is white plastic.
@@henne6675 Don't get it wrong, but if everybody will applause you, you will continue to do such obvious mistakes: everything is glossy for some weird reason, a lot of red paint where it shouldn't be, too much of hand painting etc.
@@euge6548 thats the way I like it. I am just an amateur having fun. Love the glossy paint and all the hours spend on painting by hand. I had a great time making it. I bed you are just an old negative man with nothing else to do than making critics.
Schönes Modell nur viel zu sauber! Die Lackarbeiten hätte man noch mal feinschleifen können, man sieht die dicken Pinselstriche, Airbrush währe die beste Wahl gewesen.
Disappointed in your painting skills, airbrush not paint brush, this is an expensive kit and deserves better techniques, I built this kit years ago, dual control RC, and it was airbrushed looked awsome, this one not so much.
It’s a nice model but you’ve made it look more like one of the plastic kits. Too much gloss paint and varnish. I’m making the same kit and I’m weathering it to make it look more authentic. Not sure why Billings have linked to your video on their site as this is not a true representation of what a kit by Billings should look like.

Yes

very nice, what paint are you using for the abs ?
@@wallot70 Hey there. I used enamel paint from Revell. It is an oil color, high gloss. You can use it on both abs and wood.
Really a nice model. Well Done. I remember it from tv in my childhood. I have been thinking about building it myself. You never made it Rc-controlled? Greetings from Sweden
Thank you. This is only a display model. For me its all about building and painting😃. Go for it.

painted with a brush..?

do you use model paint on the hull?
Yes. No airbrush. All by hand😀

what spray paint can you use on abs ? tamiya ts paints ?
i am currently restoring one. not a lot to do but RC components are missing and some parts. anyone help? please
Flot, det er da Jacques costeau
Jep😃. Godt set. Det er forøvrigt dit sorte maling jeg har brugt til bunden👍
Muy malo todo el trabajo de pintura y preparación de las partes. La madera de cubierta de los barcos NO se barniza, y menos en terminación brillante!
Thank you. You are much too kind😃. I would love to see some of your work. It must be excellent😁. I hope you have a wonderful day.
That's absolutely correct. The painting job here is awfull.
Thank you❤
