One detail I love in DDS is that since everyone in the Junkyard has funky hair colors, Sara is considered unique, hence calling her *the* black-haired girl.
I myself loved the tiny dialogues you get with people all around.
Literally after each major cutscene i travelled to all visited areas just to see what do people have to say.
But yeah - rarely do you get bew games put such details in. They made sure to hang embryon flag over areas you conquer and you could even see the hole heat punched in ground when facing serph at the top of castle.

Dunno if everyone knows this but the person who wrote the outline for the setting and plot for the games couldn't finish her work due to health issues, and later, eventually released a light novel with how she would've written the plot differently to the game's, and the hair was a slight plot point there, where everyone's hair is basically every outlandish colour but black making Sera unique in that way, and that the eyes were the same colour as their hair, changing to new colours when the characters start getting and displaying emotion, there's other details in the novel that slightly show up in the game, like in the novel Gale was straight up a robot and his hoodie was there to protect exposed circuitry and Sera being essential to control the hunger, though the novel is more f-ed up about it by making her Blood being what let's people control themselves, with Gale essentially making a production line out of sucking her blood and using it as a bargaining chip in negotiations for alliances among other things

EVERY battle theme is blood pumping jam. Well... The Omoikane battle theme is a bit funky but I still love it.

Satomi Tadashi, the writer for Persona 1 and 2, has also written the script for this game. Seriously, what a beautiful man.
After picking up for the og author who caught a nasty bug so had to stop after 50% done so Tadashi finished the guy's work. Also he's far from perfect some of his sins include.... makeing an anyoing as fuck insert OC with his own name who he used to romance his own waifu from IF with acidental brainwashing, pushing for the remasters of 2 on PSP just for a renewal on his copyright on the charicters in the story before leaveing Atlus in 2012 with a middle finger makeing the Caligula Effect, and finaly shiting on any SMT or Persona game story not writen by him -_- dude has a masive ego hes good but not that good

1) Yu Godai, the original author, only wrote until the first boss, it says so in her novel of Quantum Devil Saga.
2) The self insert is true but he did it not because of his waifu in If... but because of a real life actress he really admired and thus the whole Tamaki thing happened. He got a massive backlash from fans due to this.
3) Satomi left Atlus after DDS, he didn't push anything for the PSP releases of P1 and P2 since he wasn't part of the company anymore, Shoji Meguro directed those (except Eternal Punishment). He was contacted to write the new Tatsuya Scenario for the PSP release of Eternal Punishment. And has *NO* copyright on none of Atlus's games nor their characters... sheesh... what the fuck...
4) He didn't go with a middle finger, dude... he left on good terms and apparently he didn't write the Caligula Effect, he just wrote the concept of it.
5) And... when has he *ever* shit on stuff not written by him? Has he been on an interview I didn't heard about? What ego? The guy doesn't even have something like twitter or facebook to even "show his ego"... (personally speaking, he's the best writer Atlus had).
Where the fuck did you even get this information from? That was a lot of misinformation... that people even liked, Jesus Christ...

I am so grateful for this video because:

Digital Devil Saga was *accidentally* my first SMT game. I was but a wee baby to the jrpg genre and had no idea what I was doing. Never finished it, but I remember it in stark clarity, also because my poor baby ADHD addled mind couldn't figure anything out.
nocturne was the first i attempted as a kid. gave up on it pretty quickly back then but now that i like challenge in my games i wanna try again along with dds.
It's not SMT, it's a completely different thing. Western name is a lie.

Everything you need to know about your party's relation to the demifiend during the secret boss fight can be discovered by a single fact:
The song that plays during the fight? The standard encounter theme from nocturne. Not even the boss theme, just the 'oh boy, another grind battle coming up' theme.
As in, for you, he's a super secret, hidden boss... but for him? You're just another random encounter.
Indeed, for you it is the most important day of your life but for him it's just Tuesday!

So he can laugh in accessories and cheap status resistance Mantras while everyone else is struggling to deal with their elemental weaknesses.
you don't get the mantra with Null Ailment until late game, and accessories aren't in DDS, and Karma rings on DDS2 don't Null or resist ailments either

Just a tip in regards to the dialogue choices: The options do affect stuff in the second game when you transfer stuff over to it. If you choose correctly, you get a party member and some exclusive skills for Gale and Argilla.
Argilla’s Seraph Lore doesn’t seem all that noteworthy though, it’s just Mahamaon but “more likely” (which, if the enemy is weak to expel, doesn't even matter anyway since Hama skills are guaranteed to land on ‘em, plus the benefits don't apply to those with resistances)

DDS and its world are wild and I Loved both this and it's sequel. While more niche it has a lot of beauty to it and a unique sense of place. I'll be playing it again for sure
I love DDS aesthetic, might be my favourite of the SMT umbrella
Some tips:
The Cells can be sold at a maximum depending on the Solar Noise. Some sell better at 0/8 and others at 8/8.
Also, get the anti-stomachache ability ASAP since you can get a stomachache just before the battle ends, rendering your gained atma negligible.

New to the turn-based RPGs and just started DDS today... Selling cells? Sun/Moon phases? Stomach issues?
You people are speaking Greek to me.
Yeah it sounds really weird until you get deeper into the game. xD
1) Cells are items that are specifically for selling to gain Macca (the currency). Do NOT sell anything other than these cells unless you are absolutely sure that you can, as every item counts.
2) In Shin Megami Tensei, you usually have something called the Moon phase, which changes every few steps. So you get 9 phases, from 0-8 (New to Full) to 8-0 (Full to New). In DDS, you instead get "Solar Noise" which basically acts the same way. These phases effect various things such as critical rate (if you have the right skill) and how much you can sell the aforementioned Cells.
3) A feature specific to DDS is the ability to eat demons to gain "Atma points" or "AP". You can eat demons with a specific skill that allows you to insta-kill them when they're HP is low enough. Eventually you'll gain a skill that allows you to deal damage on top of eating them. However, what is really annoying, is that if you eat a lot of demons without break, you'll end up getting a "stomach-ache" as soon as you eat a demon (lol realism). This status ailment prevents you from gaining AP, which is used to gain new skills. It's an absolute hindrance if you want to strengthen your characters, as you can randomly get the ailment after the battle ends and not be able to heal it. Equipping the "Anti-Stomach-ache" ability is an absolute must if you want to consistently eat demons.
I hope that clears some things up for you. Sorry for the long post. >_

If you like Digital Devil Saga, I highly recommend the novelization! There are currently the first two professionaly translated novels in English! There are six novels in Japanese but only a few years ago were they translated into English. They are so in depth and flesh out so much of the story and characters. Please read it if you can.

All good advice, though I would add that you shouldn't ignore luck entirely. The success rate of certain attacks depends heavily on this, most importantly incoming inatakill (hama and mudo) and status attacks work much more often if your luck is low and you will rarely get lucky with crits. A high luck build can be very potent, not many enemies have super high luck stats so a decent luck rating guarantees at least one hit of a multi hit physical attack will crit thus granting an extra turn. Also, way more item drops and significantly higher chances of rare drops.
I'd also add, don't really worry about guns for all your teammates it is a complete waste of money. Have a couple dedicated gunmen for the rare gun weak enemy or hama user (humans are immune to light based attacks, a bit helpful against certain bosses) and buy only for them.

Here's a bonus tip the Bun don't want you to know: Sell your Cells at full Solar Noise and you'll get the most money from them. Except the Jack Cell, which, for some arcane reason, sells more on the lowest Solar Noise that the biggest one.
This was the most tripping shit I played back in high school along with Persona 3 FES. The OST was mind-blowing for me at the time.

Etro is the main goddess of the Final Fantasy XIII series. And Digital Devil saga has many similarities to that installment in the series, not limited to tattoos, transforming into demons, getting magic powers from a god-like entity. Neat coincidence...
One thing you missed, the cells can be sold for a LOT more when solar noise is at max. It helps a ton with getting mantras.

Fun fact, the artist/co-founder of Atlus is friends with Araki. There is even a interview between the two of them. Both are fans of their work. Game wise and art wise
Because Kazuma Kaneko and Hirohiko Araki drew inspiration on each other to design their characters.
It was also made during the time Part 6 was in publication and released a year after it finished, so it was appropriate at the time, I suppose.

Okay, this straight up became one of my favorite videos, ever. I enjoyed every moment watching it. The fun editing and jokes were great. Of course the topic is what brought me, but the prior noted is what kept me chuckling.

I'm actually going through this video so many times while on my first play through on the game. Seeing what all the good mantras are is really helping me out in terms of what I want my characters to be based on.
Can we just appreciate that in the tilde wave scene at the beginning you can see Tokyo mirage sessions in the water
Btw cells can be sold for more depending on the solar noise level. I.e. Max solar noise you get about a 5% increase i believe. Found it on a play through guide

Lil fun fact for all the PSN gamers, the PSN digital copy of DDS has some kind of V-Sync applied to it for whatever reason, effectively slowing the the game down by about 10%. Not unplayable but still noticeably more crunchy.
To disable it:
1. Hold down the PS button, which opens up those settings/display options
2. Hold down L1+R1+Left on D-Pad+Square all at the same time for about 7-10 seconds.
3. Release and press start
4. The menu should now have a few more options, select Configuration.
5. Turn V-Sync Delay Off.
Ta-da, game runs as normal.
May cause some other oddities from time to time but overall should be much smoother than before.
P.S you will have to do this process every time you start the game, but that’s a small price to pay
Hey bunz, Im glad you covering up my number 1 Megaten games of all time (my opinion). Thank you for making this gut punching, emotional rollercoaster of a jrpg into a "for beginners" video, this way, some of the SMT fans can wait For SMT V while playing this first part of duology. That being said, after you making DDS 2 for beginners. Please make one like this for Devil Survivor series. those are number 2 Megaten games of all time and i know you will like them. Thanks Bunz!
