TLDR: the left side of politics wants to hide guns while the right does not.

A popular theory at the time for why 4Kids was skipping episodes and entire arcs was because they likely wanted to get to the character Chopper faster. They probably saw how cute and marketable the character was, and a way to make their dub more popular with their target demographic.

Even if she was able to hide it, she was going to have to explain a bandage later if she continued to feign loyalty. Not only that, but considering the trickster Usopp is, it'd be in character for him to be carrying a rubber knife.

Just watched the live action and fell in love with one piece. Watching this now, I can understand why my kid self did not like one piece. It just looked and sounded too silly, but that was all in the dub and editing. I guess it’s time to finally watch the anime, in its original Japanese dubbing.

To be fair, I think they did a pretty phenomenal job making it kid-friendly. I literally would've been like 12 around this time and would've never had the money to buy the manga or the know-how to find and downloaded subbed anime. So being able to watch it at all was pretty cool. Also, gotta love the hammer-gun at 1:23. Props to whoever drew that, it kinda fits the wacky universe of One Piece.

Blood was censored and later they avoided to talk about killing for some arcs, but it had an awesome first opening which is burned into the minds of like half of the male populatio aged 27-33. I believe they censor less nowadays, tho i don't follow it as much anymore. I recommend to give the opening a listen.

All they had to do was make an edited close up of Nami's knife going between Usopp's arm and side. They could have played it out like it was in the original, then we see the edited shot when he explains what happened, and boom. Scene is someone saved. It loses the emotion gut punch of Nami willing to hurt herself for her friends, but it beats the hell out of a rubber knife.
My favorite cursed thing in 4kids one piece is don krieg's needle looking bullets being replaced with nerf darts, its just hilarious watching luffy getting seriously injured by rubber nerf darts 😂

I tried mentally preparing myself for Secret of the Seas, but no amount of preparation would have made me ready to be asked whether or not Sonic the Hedgehog gave Luffy his hat.
The story I heard was different. 4Kids didn't buy the dubbing rights to One Piece out of gullibility. They knew they would have had to edit the crap out of it. However, Toei wanted 4Kids to pick it up because they saw how successful their dubs of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! were, and they used Magical Doremi, the series 4Kids wanted in the first place, as a bargaining chip.

Yeah, pretty sure it's obvious who gave Luffy the legendary Straw Hat, and now, a few simple questions for 4kids: Why would anyone think it was Usopp?! He wears a bandanna tied around his head ALL the time! Why would anyone think it was Sonic The Hedgehog?! Sonic doesn't wear a hat! He barely wears any kind of clothes at all!! Also, he's SHORTER than Luffy! How could he have put the hat on his head, if he were SHORTER?! Also, Usopp is about 2 years younger than Luffy, Usopp being about 15 when they first met, and Luffy being 17 when he decides to finally leave home, but Shanks gave him the hat when Luffy was just a kid, the manga says it was just 10 years ago, so Luffy would've been 7, and Usopp would've been 5. And Shanks himself was probably around 32 or 33. And they both lived in different places! So how could Usopp give him a hat, when he didn't even know who he was?! Usopp's dad Yasopp knew Luffy by association, because he was on Shank's crew, the Red-Haired Pirates, and always bragged about how much he thought about his son, and how he was always in his thoughts, even though he left his family to become a pirate. He says he left because he heard the pirate sail calling his name. So, how or why could Usopp give Luffy a hat, when he didn't even know him?! Unless Usopp can suddenly time travel... nah.

Oh my God, the Winx Club 4Kids English dub actually made my stomach churn from how horrendous the voice actors were. Not to mention that they changed a lot of things compared to the RAI English version of Winx, which is pretty much the only dub I acknowledge. I mean, the Croatian dub is also pretty fucking terrible, but it's slightly less worse than the 4Kids dub.

The Oil Ocean Arc, was kinda mid. I appreciate the ambition of covering the screen with smoke, but it made Luffy’s battle with the Egg Octopus kinda hard to see.

4Kids was such a weird company. I remember when they tried to appease fans getting on their case for often unneeded edits by releasing a very short-lived uncut dub of Yu-Gi-Oh, and going for minimal edits on Shaman King. I guess these didn't pull in enough revenue since they recoiled beyond their old ways for One Piece. Also, missed opportunity to not call the 4Kids dub "Four Piece" and the Funimation dub "Fun Piece".

Just watched the live action and fell in love with one piece. Watching this now, I can understand why my kid self did not like one piece. It just looked and sounded too silly, but that was all in the dub and editing. I guess it’s time to finally watch the anime, in its original Japanese dubbing.

The funimation dub for one piece is pretty solid to give a shot. Netflix has about 300 of the episodes and Hulu has that and beyond

What the real anime or the 4kids version
To be fair, I think they did a pretty phenomenal job making it kid-friendly. I literally would've been like 12 around this time and would've never had the money to buy the manga or the know-how to find and downloaded subbed anime. So being able to watch it at all was pretty cool. Also, gotta love the hammer-gun at 1:23. Props to whoever drew that, it kinda fits the wacky universe of One Piece.

The german dub is really great comparatively. Blood was censored and later they avoided to talk about killing for some arcs, but it had an awesome first opening which is burned into the minds of like half of the male populatio aged 27-33. I believe they censor less nowadays, tho i don't follow it as much anymore.
I recommend to give the opening a listen.

All they had to do was make an edited close up of Nami's knife going between Usopp's arm and side. They could have played it out like it was in the original, then we see the edited shot when he explains what happened, and boom. Scene is someone saved. It loses the emotion gut punch of Nami willing to hurt herself for her friends, but it beats the hell out of a rubber knife.
Personally, I like the idea that Smoker just naturally had smoke coming out of him all the time.

The story I heard was different. 4Kids didn't buy the dubbing rights to One Piece out of gullibility. They knew they would have had to edit the crap out of it. However, Toei wanted 4Kids to pick it up because they saw how successful their dubs of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! were, and they used Magical Doremi, the series 4Kids wanted in the first place, as a bargaining chip.

Source: i was one of those kids who watched One Piece through 4kids and yes I did think his lollipop thing was badass. I hate to think that it staying a cigarette would have effected how I view smoking but it could have. So I’m glad they changed it, as silly as everyone says it is.

Yeah, pretty sure it's obvious who gave Luffy the legendary Straw Hat, and now, a few simple questions for 4kids: Why would anyone think it was Usopp?! He wears a bandanna tied around his head ALL the time! Why would anyone think it was Sonic The Hedgehog?! Sonic doesn't wear a hat! He barely wears any kind of clothes at all!! Also, he's SHORTER than Luffy! How could he have put the hat on his head, if he were SHORTER?! Also, Usopp is about 2 years younger than Luffy, Usopp being about 15 when they first met, and Luffy being 17 when he decides to finally leave home, but Shanks gave him the hat when Luffy was just a kid, the manga says it was just 10 years ago, so Luffy would've been 7, and Usopp would've been 5. And Shanks himself was probably around 32 or 33. And they both lived in different places! So how could Usopp give him a hat, when he didn't even know who he was?! Usopp's dad Yasopp knew Luffy by association, because he was on Shank's crew, the Red-Haired Pirates, and always bragged about how much he thought about his son, and how he was always in his thoughts, even though he left his family to become a pirate. He says he left because he heard the pirate sail calling his name. So, how or why could Usopp give Luffy a hat, when he didn't even know him?! Unless Usopp can suddenly time travel... nah.

Oh my God, the Winx Club 4Kids English dub actually made my stomach churn from how horrendous the voice actors were. Not to mention that they changed a lot of things compared to the RAI English version of Winx, which is pretty much the only dub I acknowledge. Never watched the One Piece dub, but my god this is clown circus level voice acting.
4Kids was such a weird company. I remember when they tried to appease fans getting on their case for often unneeded edits by releasing a very short-lived uncut dub of Yu-Gi-Oh, and going for minimal edits on Shaman King. I guess these didn't pull in enough revenue since they recoiled beyond their old ways for One Piece.
Also, missed opportunity to not call the 4Kids dub "Four Piece" and the Funimation dub "Fun Piece".
You can blame Funimation for the uncut dub of YGO getting canned, they weren't paying Yami Yugi's Japanese VA his agreed royalties.
4kids went behind the back of the owners of yugioh in Japan and didn’t pay fees for the uncut dub. So the we’re legally forced to cancel it
@@174Anime Technically it was Funimation who did that. 4Kids was just handling the dubbing, Funimation was handling everything else.

@@FedoraKirb that latter explanation actually does seem on brand for 4kids. No realistic depictions of blood or death, but having your soul displaced happened all the time in yugioh.
