Nice. Kevin Gilbert is probably the greatest rock artist that hardly anyone has ever heard of. His catalog of music with Giraffe, Toy Matinee, Thud and solo is spectacular.
This is insanely cool. KG music is sacred ground in our family... our music collection... and it's a pleasure to hear these insights! We play (or attempt to!) KG music in many projects over the years.
Thanks Guy...best song EVER. An album that should be in every collection. Great songwriting, playing, and singing. The genius of Pat Leonard and Kevin Gilbert. No wonder you all had such a great time. Sounds amazing on both CD and vinyl.
I was obsessed with this album and couldn’t understand why it didn’t get the acclaim it deserved. Not to knock another group but this band along with the songs was far better than Mr.Mister and had far less commercial success. This bass playing is phenomenal and is a microcosm of what made the record great. Bravo!
This makes me very happy. I’m 37 years old and this has been my favorite album since I was 10 years old when my mom brought it home after hearing them on the radio. I was looking through the comments for this comment specifically and it was nice to hear it. What’s really funny is I’ve had this album in my CD player in my car for years at a time through multiple multi year relationships with girls and each time none of them ever asked me to change the album once.
I just posted Last Plane Out as day 5 of 10 of albums that we most influential to me. Kevin Gilbert was an amazing songwriter that left us way too early! The music on this album ranks up there with the Beatles. As a drummer, Brian's work on this was incredibly inspirational to me and is one of my favorite songs to play. Thanks for sharing this Guy!
One of the most underrated albums of all time. KG was simply brilliant and the sheen of the production still sounds fresh today. Incredible bass playing, Guy!
Fabulous. I love the shake/slide of notes you do. Especially in LPO. So cool and it pops right out for a second and your ear goes "WTF was that?? Was that mee ears?" Crossing my fingers for Jenny Ledge. Been a huge fan of Kevin's work for years as well. Gone too soon. Thank you again, Guy. Very appreciated.
I heard this on the Radio at KLOS Los Angeles and was during Desert Shield/Storm and took this album and loved the Music and also Love Things She Said also.
It was on local rock radio whne it came out. I am POSITIVE there was some sort of payola going on becuase somethign this good from Madonna's Magic Man (Pat Leonard, look on here for Tim Pierce Toy Matinee for amgreat doc of the players on the album, he has a 2nd video you have to dig for) to jave a somg on ROCK radio. When Jenny Ledge got played I LEFT WORK to go buy the CD. Whole thing is amazing. Tim Pierce played on all your favorite late 80s 90s songs.
Great clip. You are indeed one of my fav bass players. 🙏 I met Kevin Gilbert in Japan back in -89 and also met him here in Sweden once. We did keep in touch for some years. Fantastic musician and singer. Sad he is gone. 😢
Heard this song on AFN radio in Germany around '91 and became an instant fan by the time the 1st chorus was over. Kevin Gilbert was a genius. Check out his music like Thud or The Shaming of the True.
I lived in LA when this came out, and KLOS played the hell out of this song!! Just a fantastic album. I have the re release, and your phone call is on one of the bonus tracks. This should really get a vinyl issue. It would sound amazing I think.
I feel fortunate to have obtained a copy when I could. One of the BEST sounding, recorded, produced and written albums of all time...that few have heard. My God, these musicians are just...well....completely in the pocket of groove. The bass....being a bass player myself...is outrageous and a perfect complimentary performance to each song on the album. I am humbled by it all.
Fantastic Mr. Pratt! What a bass line! I had know idea you played on that. I was living in LA at the time and discovered Kevin Gilbert on Mark and Brian. Loved that Toy Matinee album. Great playing, writing, production! I played the hell put of it. Should have had more recognition. Kevin was quite a talent and is sorely missed.
I became an instant fan of Toy Matinee when I lived in LA after hearing you for the first time on Mark & Brian. Shortly after that, I couldn't count how many people came into the record store I was working at to ask if we've gotten your album in stock, and then finally the full album finally got released, and I just had to get a copy of it for myself. Let's just say I became an even bigger fan after hearing the album in its entirety and that fanfare never died out, even after all these years. I kept thinking to myself how your bass skills and Brian's drumming really stood out as something quite powerful---such a "concept you can dance to" if you will. I still play my Toy Matinee CD constantly.
Love this track and just got the reissue vinyl of Toy Matinee, a classic mostly unknown album. Did not know you were on bass until now Guy! Thanks for video
One of the all time greatest CD ever. I'd almost say Beatles caliber but my loyalty to the Beatles prevents me from saying that. I'd love to hear Things She Said, Queen of Misery and Jenny Ledge. I'd also love to hear more stories about the making of this CD. Thanks for sharing.
I remember when Kevin brought me the demo tapes of this stuff I was totally blown away. We played together at Serra High School. I went on to play with Roger Steen from The Tubes and later with Miles Schon, Neil‘s son. Check out Roger Steen’s 2012 release. Kevin I love you brother.
I picked up bass playing again at the start of the pandemic and as a beginner, I’m very proud to say that watching your performances on UA-cam, YOU taught me how to play Comfortably Numb and Money. Thank you for being a tutor and also for your interesting stories.
Still remember the first time I heard Toy Matinee when it first came out... blew me away. An absolute high-water mark for post-70's music and one of the greatest musical collaborations ever of largely unknown talents. Awesome story. Next time you're in LA, you should hook up with Tim Pierce and do an episode on his YT channel... just do it!
Fantastic stuff here, Guy! Would love to hear more about your experience making the Toy Matinee record. And more songs as well! “Queen of Misery” or “Jenny Ledge” perhaps?
Toy Matinee is how I discovered Guy. I had had the album since its release, one day while listening to it I was struck by the bass work and had to find out who the hell this badass bassist was. That was when I realized just how much music in my life had featured Mr. Guy Pratt. Cheers Guy and thanks for allll the great tunes!
Guy, I am a drummer and I can honestly say you are the greatest bass player I've ever heard... Your taste is a once in a lifetime gift given to you at birth... If I have one dream is to play the Toy Matinee album with the incredible group of super musician... I have to say that you are my biggest inspiration even thogh we do not play the same instrument... In my opinion, the death of Kevin is the saddest in music history... I think that playing with you will be the happiest day I can ever dream of...
Honestly you could go through this album track by track and I would not be disappointed. Nothing against anything else you've ever played on but your performance on every single track is just absolutely brilliant.
I can't thank you enough for making this series! Kevin Gilbert was such a great talent and the Toy Matinee album is on my "Stranded on a desert island and you only have 10 albums" list. Your playing on that album (and pretty much everything else) is fantastic. Cheers!
A big smile on my face from the beginning to the end! Late '80s when I heard this on radio I first thought it was a new modern fantastic Jethro Tull song :-D
Brilliant song from a brilliant mind with a brilliant bass line!! I've heard lots of Guy Pratt's bass work and he's never been better than on the Toy Matinee album, so damn good on every song.
Cheers Guy, like everyone on here, really enjoy these videos. The insights, humour and the digressing brighten up my day. Been looking forward to this 1 and didn't dissapoint. Murder on the dance floor, luv that bass line and can't wait. Cheers again.
Hi Guy.....TM was on of my favorites bands back in the day, and also for the last several years. Very cool to see this video. I can appreciate your talent much more now.
I've described this record as "music for adults", "music for people who love music", and "the greatest record ever made". Kevin is my spirit animal and I thank you all so much for making this album, Guy.
Absolutely amazing! Toy Matinee is an incredible album that never got it's due! can you even imagine the music we would have from Kevin today? tragic. there are few albums that hold much meaning for me. TM is one of the top 5 for me! the amount of shear emotion, the roller coaster ride the the music takes you through is just incredible. I have always loved the bass parts on this song and many others. I feel they have a major part in shaping the the whole album. Thank you for posting this.
This to me was the most underrated album I've ever heard.I'll never understand why this album wasn't as successful as it was. This is why Guy Pratt got my attention.Great bass part.Incredible band.
I must say.... 🤔 So, you ARE the secret ingredient of MANY popular songs. Please Guy keep the annecdotes coming. (This Terminal Frost bit) You see? That's what I meant by more stories about PF music were involved. Bless you.
Hi Guy. Huge fan here. I'm just blown away by the fact that you're the bassist on Toy Matinee (my ignorance), one of my favorite albums! You have an amazing innate sense of timing and rhythm. What you don't play speaks volumes. Would like to talk to you for hours about even this one song. Thanks for sharing your insights.
Loving this series, perfect combination of stories and bass! How about showing us the part (and telling the story) of Robert Palmer’s “Discipline of Love” - the only track on “Riptide” where the bass wasn’t played by a certain Bernard Edwards. (Also what’s it like to be produced by the one of the greatest bass players ever - no pressure there Guy!). Apologies if this has already been asked (originally posted on Facebook).
Can't thank you enough for this, Guy. As you've probably seen by now there's quite a few KG fans still around! But I never realized you were the bassist on most of this album. Now I get why so many of the songs are so nicely funked up. Oh, and I caught you in SF last year with Nick Mason. Nice to make a little money off of something that started out as just a laugh, eh?
By far, one of my favorite bass lines from one of my favorite albums! LOVED watching you break it down, sir. That chorus IS a bit deceiving. The chord changes are subtle and weird, but they work perfectly. To hear the isolated bass part was great. It doesn't sound like it would work with the acoustic guitar chords at all, but when you put them together...magic.
Spent a very enjoyable hour or so with this video, my Betsy bass and Boss octave pedal running through this....my favourite so far. And that Spector has almost as much history as all those banjos Mr Gilmour flogged last year.
Guy, I’m not a bass player but I’m simply loving your videos. I now listen to bass lines in a new light! I was a teen madly into pop in the 90s and Toy Matinee passed me by. Thank you for bringing this to us - interesting song with a lovely strong bass line. And nice temporary key modulations in the chorus. Cool pop 😎 You’re also a funny guy which makes you so watchable! Don’t ever stop doing these - they brighten my week 😊
What a beautiful track. Gorgeous chord progressions. Lovely bass work, Guy. Thank you for bringing me a band I've never looked at before. Stay safe and take care
One of my all time favorite songs! It's still in my playlist for when I'm on the motorcycle. Came across it when my local radio station, WIZN The Wizard had it in heavy rotation. Sadly, I don't remember listening to many other songs from the album except There Was a Little Boy - take a listen if you dare, if it doesn't make you cry, you're not human! Anyway, always wished they would make more music! Thanks for making this!
I thought you and Brian were stellar on this project. Working with Kevin Gilbert must've been something to remember. Thank you for doing this and stay well Guy! Cheers from Minnesota!
One of those treasured gems albums. Recently was able to buy the surround version....wow. Stellar playing, stellar songs and production. Thanks for this
I"ve become addicted to listening to your bass lines - they are just extraordinary and very cool - accompanied by your particular humorous take on stuff - love it all.
From Los Angeles. Never heard of that band/song..but..love the story, Bass makes that song, the rhythm in the bridge. Guy, you are a beast brother! Thanks!
Nice. Kevin Gilbert is probably the greatest rock artist that hardly anyone has ever heard of. His catalog of music with Giraffe, Toy Matinee, Thud and solo is spectacular.
Toy Matinee is a reference record. The musicianship, composition and production is in a league of it's own. Thank you for this.
I have heard it used as a soundcheck during many preshows! One of my favorite of all time, for sure.
I’ve heard this song used multiple times by sound guys at live shows to set the levels before hand
Guy Pratt is a comic genius in the parallel dimension, his sense of humor is as sharp as his bass play .
Kevin Gilbert was a genius. I’m so glad you’re speaking about the Toy Matinee.
@@Rupert14 that’s a bit harsh, he was getting married and had a Pink Floyd tour to do. Hence he doesn’t play on one track on the album.
@UCv0S7Ab5YqJv6Fuuj3FgjeA he’s single handedly caused lots of people to go looking for Octave pedals during lockdown 😂😂
I absolutely love Toy Matinee. Kevin Gilbert was a genius and I loved his solo projects, as well as Giraffe. Brilliant music.
”There’s gonna be a few more from this album”. YES! Thank you kindly!

Kevin Gilbert was a huge talent. This was one of my favorite albums from the period.
Never knew about this band. Got my grubby hands on the cd today - what an amazing album!

Beautiful work! You’re absolutely beaming recalling this band, had to be a golden time. Great album.
This is the content we need to get us through these strange times. Thank you.
One of the most underrated albums of all time. KG was simply brilliant and the sheen of the production still sounds fresh today. Incredible bass playing, Guy!

Wish I could have met Kevin. However I have met Marc Bonilla and become friends which has been a huge highlight of my long days life of loving music
You were amazing on that album! My absolute favorite album of my entire life! Thanks for sharing your talent with the world!
Thanks for mentioning Kevin. Seems he sometimes gets overlooked when you discuss this album in interviews, so thanks.
Mr. Pratt, It's just such a privilege and pleasure to listen to you play and share your stories. Thank you so very, very much!
What a Legend,he is.
Heard this song on AFN radio in Germany around '91 and became an instant fan by the time the 1st chorus was over.
Kevin Gilbert was a genius. Check out his music like Thud or The Shaming of the True.
Toy Matinee was great, your bass lines and tone are a major part of the sound. Absolutely love it.

Yep!!

Great album, thanks for sharing Guy! Huge Kevin Gilbert fan!!!
Wow, this album will be released on vinyl again here in the Netherlands 🇱🇺
I bought it last week and really happy with it!
Love this track and just got the reissue vinyl of Toy Matinee, a classic mostly unknown album. Did not know you were on bass until now Guy! Thanks for video
Kevin was a HUGE Peter Gabriel era Genesis fan, so I'm sure the dig on Phil came from him.

One of the sexiest bass lines, up there with Like a Prayer.
Your work on this album inspires me as a bassist every time I listen to it. It's masterful!!! These videos are fabulous!
You make it look so effortless Guy 😎
How have I never heard this song before ? Awesome

You're the secret sauce in so many of the songs I've loved since their release. Thank you for this video. It was an absolute delight to watch.
Oh YES!! Soo many times i have listened and now to finally see it played live. Priceless!🙌👍
Thanks Guy, one of my all time favorite albums. Thanks for the break down and great stories!
I can't thank you enough for making this series! Kevin Gilbert was such a great talent and the Toy Matinee album is on my "Stranded on a desert island and you only have 10 albums" list. Your playing on that album (and pretty much everything else) is fantastic. Cheers!
Even I'M relieved you kept your bass. So many memories for you and it.
This is such a late 80s sound. Love it.
One of my absolute favorite albums.
A big smile on my face from the beginning to the end! Late '80s when I heard this on radio I first thought it was a new modern fantastic Jethro Tull song :-D

Toy Matinee is a work of genius. Guy’s bass work drives each song with a different style and feel. Bravo!!
I have this CD (somewhere) but I haven’t listened to it in probably 20 years. Time to dig it out.

Thanks! That was great! TM album is one of my favorites to this day. Turn it on Salvador!
Mr Pratt. THAT is a bass line !!! Excellent. Beautifully executed. 🖖🏼👌🏻
Great, great album!! Thanks for posting this! You're awesome!!
Loved the Toy Maintee album . One of the best .imo . Thx Guy 4 sharing 😊
Thank you again! All this video made me see the man behind the bass, it is great.
My favorite TM song!!! Once again, fantastic bass playing!!
Love your work on Toy Matinee! great playing!
Re: Toy Matinee. GREAT album! I still recommend it often.
Brilliant listening to your stories and of course your basslines, thanks for keeping us entertained.
This to me was the most underrated album I've ever heard.I'll never understand why this album wasn't as successful as it was. This is why Guy Pratt got my attention.Great bass part.Incredible band.
Don't you mean 'more' ? : )
Picking up Level 42 vibes from this. Absolutely fantastic!
Amazing, thank you again. I've just watched Pink Floyd Live in Venice again!! Still epic.
Quite a lot of questions that I’ve already answered on other episodes. If I’m not answering you chances are that’s why. x
Loving this series, perfect combination of stories and bass! How about showing us the part (and telling the story) of Robert Palmer’s “Discipline of Love” - the only track on “Riptide” where the bass wasn’t played by a certain Bernard Edwards. @@priesty78 I believe that there is most of a chapter devoted to this in Guy's book.
I must say, still, this is your best work ever. And, I LOVE Pink Floyd. One of the best bass lines ever.
Amazing bass !! Guy love watching you mate
You finally got to play it!! Well worth the wait, I’d say - and such good fun to play along with. 👍🏻
So much positive energy. Great Guy.
I LOVE Toy Matinee. I wore out TWO cassettes listening to this album. Every single song, every bass line, just rocked. Thanks for this!
Last plane out; is currently one of my favorite songs. Constantly in my head!
In 2021. One of Tim’s videos turned me on to this!
Cool pop 😎
You’re also a funny guy which makes you so watchable!
Don’t ever stop doing these - they brighten my week 😊
What a beautiful track. Gorgeous chord progressions. Lovely bass work, Guy. Thank you for bringing me a band I've never looked at before. Stay safe and take care
Thank you for doing this one. There’s an entire generation of sound engineers that tune or proof PAs to this album.
Thank you very much Guy for your videos, your energy, your groove, and for this track I didn't know and I love it!! keep on and stay safe!!
Your base playing on toy matinees exquisite!!!!
Killer chorus, great song.
Another great one, loving your book by the way, and the Syd Barratt Telecaster on the wall, that's some collection of guitars Guy.
It's not Telecaster it's esquire
Apologies I stand corrected.
Thanks for this
I've always loved this song. The bass is simply amazing. Thanks
Love how your Fitbit strap matches your top in each of your lockdown licks videos 😂
Thanks!
Some of the songs from the Toy Matinee album got airplay on KLOS back in the day!
Killer bass lines Guy.. Finally getting behind the curtain look at this amazing record from the people involved! Thank You
