  • Ultima Online Outlands is a free private server for the venerable MMORPG: Ultima Online.
It sports custom maps, npcs, and quality of life upgrades as well as differences in how some skills work.
It's a pre-trammel ruleset which adds danger to the world with the potential for Player Killers (PKs) that haven't existed in UO for a long time.
It's an active and friendly server with a great community that is sure to make fans of classic MMOs happy.
You can get started with the game here: uooutlands.com/
    It's very easy to install.
I also strongly recommend checking out ‪@PwnstarrGaming‬ if you like UO Outlands because not only does he stream the game but he has tones of helpful guide videos that will be invaluable to you.
While this is for the UO Outlands server, the original Ultima Online servers are still up as well which you can find here: uo.com/
UO offers a free to play version with an optional subscription and is still actively supported by Broadsword's small team and published by EA.

Correction!: Thank you to Mercster for pointing this out: "You said it uses the "Classic UO" client... which is technically true, but that may have led people to believe it uses the client UO proper uses. "Classic UO" is a open source project that re-implements the client using modern technologies, and is VERY different from, well... the "classic" "UO client."

@@mercster It doesnt have to look like modern mmos.. even in the end of 90s and early 2000s, UIs were more or less similar what they are to this day... UO has absolutely bad ui design, even for that Era.
Im surprised modern gamer communities who keep old games allive, mod them etc... not just band together to remkae the engine and proper ui.. just use the original assets and sharper shaders etc to enhance...
old games werent exactly mechanically complex , it takes less time to rewrite the engine as opensource, than modding the original mess.. even if u mod the original srrc code.. u could still make more plausible UI..
well there was some mods for outlands, could make macros for bandage and stuff... the game felt a bit too booring for me, i made that melee dps class with shield mace.. just feels dull.. u literally have no spells to cast, skills to use... makes games like this incredib ly dull and booring. i like isometric "golden era" graphics tho.
That was several yhears ago, i need to take a second look... i think i quietd fast, because im m,ore solo player.. no friends play this kind of stuff.. i felt lost.. content was pretty hard as well.. when u get insta ganked everytime i step out of noob island.
I liked those skeleton killing in cemetery tho, where in some tunnel, Lich was throwing lightning bolts :D atleast it felt good, when some mob can kill you... unlike in modern mmos.. they dont feel anymore games even, when everyone is so watered down and dumbed down in terms of difficulty... everyone can feel it how dumbed down modern mmos are.
too much handholding. well there's Albion online, but it feels too arcade'i and cartoony to me... game like ultima online, if slightly more modern ux/ui game but similar classic looking isometric graphics would def have a shot at the gaming market being popular enough game.
i learned to code to make a game, but i soon reliezed making a game is years of effort solo... so i quit trying quickly.. and become standard developer in corporate ; )

@@Microphunktv-jb3kj I didn't say "look" I said "work"... its entire skill/combat/etc structures work entirely differently to modern MMOs. And... the UO Outlands client comes with a "mod" (or rather, an external tool) called "Razor" that lets you set up all the macros and things. You may think that was included in the original game, but it's not... that's your "modding tool" essentially. But yeah, I don't mean to talk you into liking it, if you have no nostalgia for the original game, modern gamers won't understand the charm. There's an internal logic and rhythm to it, but in the end, it remains in an earlier time...

EA bought Origin a long time ago and their bean counters trashed the game development. UO almost did not happen because of these people who mismanage everything and say they cannot prove anything is profitable. UO was pretty much funded by the sale of beta CDs much like shareware. Same reason ultima 8 and 9 look like beta junk. These games are all extremely lucky to get funding, find developers with the passion, and not have bean counters interfering.

Definitely nailed this review. This is what UO always should have been. Ofc its super clunky and hardcore as well (especially open FFA PVP as soon as you're out of the town/newbie island). Although they JUST added the rotating weekly Sanctuary dungeon (no thief/PK but 50% less loot/XP), great place to get started after the newbie island.
However having played a lot of MMOs over time, nothing compares to the adrenaline rush of Ultima Online. Never knowing what's going to happen in a dungeon because of other players. Friends, foes, etc. Definitely not for everyone, but nothing quite like it either!

You can have a boat and sail the seas you can be a treasure hunter or a carpenter a fisherman a blacksmith a scribe the list goes on. A very detailed world with just about everything in it that the real world has. I mean you have forks and spoons and plates and cups you can make them yourself or go out to shops and purchase them, you can build a house chop wood camp. I don't know of any game that even comes close. Maybe there are some out there but to me this game just hits the top of the rpg list especially how Outlands has approached there expansions with such creativity and artful care towards detail. Its truly a work of art and a joy to play

UO Outlands is a peculiar game that left me with a rollercoaster of emotions. At times, it offered the promise of fun and adventure, but too often, the player community on both red and blue sides soured the experience to the point where I'd rather entertain myself with a hammer and smash my own fingers. Reds will be Reds but to have Blues also see an opertunity to get you they will too.
Let's start with the positives. UO Outlands has the potential to be an enjoyable experience. It captures the essence of classic Ultima Online with a vibrant, open world teeming with opportunities for exploration, crafting, and player interactions. The nostalgia factor is strong, and for those who have fond memories of the original Ultima Online, this shard provides a familiar yet fresh take on the game.
However, the major downside to UO Outlands is its player community. The Red and Blue factions often create an environment that's more frustating than it is enjoyable. Griefing, killing just beacuse they can, and a general lack of sportsmanship seem to be the norm rather than the exception. Instead of fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and competition, it often feels like a battleground of frustration.
One of the most disheartening aspects is the prevalence of what seems like a "pay-to-win" mentality among players. Many seem more interested in avoiding confrontation with well-geared opponents than engaging in fair fights. This results in an ecosystem where the less equipped players are the easiest targets, which suggests a lack of skill on the part of many participants. It's frustrating to see a potentially rich PvP experience reduced to a game of avoiding real challenges.
However, it's important to note that not all players fit this mold. UO Outlands does have a dedicated community of skilled and honorable players who genuinely contribute to the game's overall appeal. Unfortunately, they seem to be overshadowed by those who prioritize easy victories over fair competition.
In conclusion, UO Outlands has the potential to be a fun and nostalgic gaming experience, but the enjoyment factor is severely compromised by a portion of the player base that often prioritizes toxic behavior and "play-to-win" tactics. If you're considering giving it a try, be prepared for a mixed bag of emotions, as your enjoyment will largely depend on the encounters you have with other players. Remember, this is just one person's opinion, and your experience may vary.

I played the original UO for three years and hardly ever pvpd. That doesnt mean i wouldnt because you had to be able to defend yourself, atleast long enough to escape. Theres so many ways to play this game that have nothing to do with pvp. Thats the only complaint i have had with free shards ive tried to play since the original, theres not many people playing so you kinda only got pvp, the towns wouldnt be busy, you wouldnt have the people that were just mining or just role playing or treasure hunting or just hanging out meeting people. Some of the funnest times were going to a house that was falling and just hanging out watching all the chaos that would be going on, or going to the bone knight room and grinding your wrestling/swords/macing while talking shit and then scattering when a pk group would come through. Or running through the woods for an extra 5 minutes to get to the goblin camp so you dont get pkd at the x roads on the way there. As good as a server is, it needs a strong player base to really get UO to be right

Man, I was around for this time, but never played UO. I tried Outlands, and I'm not stranger to retro MMO's, but I could NOT figure anything out enough to do ANYTHING in this game. I couldn't see people's names, I couldn't find the hotbar for Skills, Magic made no sense and did nothing (which caused a deer to almost kill me), I couldn't figure out how to equip the dagger i started with, and I couldn't even figure out how to read descriptions about items. At one point, I accidentally used a bunch of one-time shards that seemed to increase my stats to 20+, which made no sense, because I was supposed to start with 60 Int. Nothing in Outlands made sense.
Edit: I did eventually figure out the hotbars, apparently you have to MAKE them yourself, which is never explained. Even then, magic was really clunky, and I couldn't seem to figure out what all my stats were, since it never displayed any numbers, and the chat was dominated by random nonsense of skills leveling, preventing me from seeing anything else. Overall, just a clunky experience that I cannot recommend.

It is the best shard I know. Many players are online, and you don't feel like you're alone. There are numerous encounters and interactions with others. What also appeals to me is that you don't acquire gold quickly; instead, you have to work for it. :D I would say, on average, there are about 2500 players online (depending on the time). It's a lot of fun.

A modern rendition on this game would be incredible and probably very popular at least at launch. There are not enough MMOs, difficult or otherwise, that allow totally free build diversity. On the top of my head Albion, and Runescape are the closest to this idea in its purest form. I do not understand the seemingly mandatory design principles behind rigid design that requires numerous alt accounts to experience different facets of an MMO. Well I do understand pushing people to play longer hours by making alts mandatory, or even selling a solution to the problem of not having enough alt slots available to you. There are so many great ideas behind older MMOs that deserve to be iterated on, I'm not even worried about the often nebulous idea of them being "too easy" like some people bang on about, but what worries me the most is how a new MMO will be monetized and who publishes it.

    • @zipzap8937
      @zipzap8937 Рік тому +2

@@Microphunktv-jb3kj I feel quite the opposite about the modern art styles in games, generally because it is exactly that. It's just a choice. The "skin" for one game isn't really better or worse than another game unless they are competing for who can do hyper realism the best, and so far by that particular metric any game coming out five years from now will do it better than a game that came out today. With Albion the art style doesn't strike me as being "for mobile" in the same way as the incredibly lack luster number of abilities you get. You're spot on that does make it feel very MOBA like but for an entirely different reason. It's generally not what I want out of MMO combat, but I play it for the great build diversity and social aspect.

I do occasionally play on another emulator server but use Orion instead of Razor. I found Orion to be more helpful for what I need as fast as all the macros and scripts to handle all those tasks like looting, opening doors, raising skills that make you click things, etc. The server I play on is no pvp, and some nice QoL features. However, Outlands is the current king of UO emulators by far. I considered playing there too, but as you said, most people playing there have been playing forever and know their shit. While I enjoy pvp here and there, Id like have the option when I want to do it ,instead of getting randomly killed by veterans who know every little trick and tactic about pvp in UO. Its similar to going out to unsecure space in Eve Online as a new player. You are assured you will lose everything. I do watch Pwnstarr85's videos/stream once in a while too. I'll leave the pvping up to him =)

"Not the nostalgia you're looking for" Not sure what to make of this negative... I mean, I know it's cool for kids these days to say they have nostalgia for things they never experienced, but... that's impossible. That may be longing or something, but it's not nostalgia. Can't have nostalgia for something you didn't experience. So in this case... yes, it is exactly the nostalgia anyone playing this game is looking for, if they played Ultima Online. :-) Better stated: "This is not the outlet for your desire to LARP for ye oldene dayse that you never experienced you're looking for."

  • @willmarisela
    @willmarisela 9 місяців тому

a thing to note.. that kind of makes this a unique niche.
this isnt for a lot of old UO players looking for the nostalgia.
It is for past UO players who are looking to RP and specific thing.
The thing these old UO players are looking to RP. Is RPing someone who is a good PvPer. Who is an online digital elite badass.
Which is kind of unique because usually people are looking to RP their ingame character. not RP a type of RL person.
How did this happen? pre year 2000 when UO was being played by a lot of people, what happened was: Some people started getting high speed internets and good computers. Which gave them a MASSIVE advantage of the average person playing on their dial up telephone lines.
Then in addition the more serious players got their hands on MACRO programs.
With these added features these players were able to player kill other players a lot. Usually using a specific template called the "tank mage".. which was basically a combo of 7 specific skills that had to be leveled/macrod up.
Over time eventually things started to level out as more and more people got cable/DSL internet connections and better computers. Also of course balance changes, changed which classes were popular.. etc
BUT during that time period a decent amount of these more serious players with their macros and high speed internet got the feeling that they were online PvP badasses. Destroying everyone, getting rich, getting accepted into social group guilds of other "badass PvPers".
As the game moved on in patches and people moved to other games... a lot of these people learned they were not super PvPers. But they had the nostalgia of heydays in late 90s UO.
They recreated UO were the tank mage template dominated all.. But what happened is the players no longer felt elite, because they had no easy prey to hunt/PvP.
So the balance has been to add a bunch of PvE content... non PvP content for people. Art, monster fighting variety.. etc etc.
BUT then make the specific tank mage the only real viable PvP template.. while making all the monster fighting/exploring skills get disabled in PvP.
NOW these old players with decades of macro program and in game experience on how to PvP with the tank mage can feel elite, by beating up all these other players in PvP. and thus get to RP the feeling of being an elite PvPer.

Honestly going to have to say a lot of those cons are an L take. It sounds like to me that you didn't look into the interface options. For example looting, there is a new style and an old option, you can use both at the same time. As for this just being for old UO Players... that's an L take too. I've met plenty of people who've never played UO in the past. In fact I'd say a lot of what it does makes this more of a UO 2 than a 1.25 or 1.5. All of the systems they have in place are incredible, I'm sure you would have experienced them if you played for more than 15 hours.
Play the game for 100 hours, then tell me if you still think this way.
