Ultima is a series of open world fantasy role-playing video games from Origin Systems, Inc. Ultima was created by Richard Garriott. A significant series in computer game history, it is considered, alongside Wizardry and Might and Magic, to be one of the establishers of the computer role-playing game genre. Several games of the series are considered seminal entries in their genre, and each installment introduced new innovations which then were widely copied by other games. Electronic Arts has owned the brand since 1992.
The games take place for the most part in a world called Britannia; the constantly recurring hero is the Avatar, first named so in Ultima IV. They are primarily within the scope of fantasy fiction but contain science fiction elements as well. The series sold over 2 million copies by 1997.
The main Ultima series consists of nine installments (the seventh title is divided into two parts) grouped into three trilogies, or "Ages": The Age of Darkness (Ultima I-III), The Age of Enlightenment (Ultima IV-VI), and The Age of Armageddon (Ultima VII-IX). The last is also sometimes referred to as "The Guardian Saga" after its chief antagonist. The first trilogy is set in a fantasy world named Sosaria, but during the cataclysmic events of The Age of Darkness, it is sundered and three quarters of it vanish. What is left becomes known as Britannia, a realm ruled by the benevolent Lord British, and is where the later games mostly take place. The protagonist in all the games is a male resident of Earth who is called upon by Lord British to protect Sosaria and, later, Britannia from a number of dangers. Originally, the player character was referred to as "the Stranger", but by the end of Ultima IV he becomes universally known as the Avatar.

I started playing UO in 1997. I was 13 years old and played well into my 20’s. I am now 38 years old and this game brings me back some of the best memory’s ever.
same here, played UO beta then from release until they fucked pvp... switched to everquest but it was not the same, miss the old UO pvp soo much... some of the best memories I have as well

We're almost the same age and also started playing at around the same time. To this day UO has by far had the biggest impact of any online game I've ever played.

Ultima 7 is one of the greatest RPGs of all time even when compared against today's games (minus the graphics). It's too bad Garriott checked out post-EA acquisition, because Ultima 8 and 9 were dumpster fires.
8 got got hot fixed at least. The platforming issues got fixed. 9 was a plot issue, the worst thing that can go wrong in a game lol
Pretty sure they scrapped it because online was coming out at the same time and they shifted focus to it
By the time they were ready to release ascension everyone already had 3d accel cards and 9 was obsolete and had to be redone with minimal story
This is Incorrect Garriot didnt leave Origin till somewhere around early 2000. While its true that Garriot sold Origin to EA in 1992, he stayed on as CEO till he was forced out. Garriot was fully active in Ultima 8 (which released in 1994) He was also Instrumental in creating Ultima Online (Sept 1997) Which took graphics/music and sound effects directly from Ultima Online. If Garriot wouldnt have sold Origin to EA many of the games they made would have never released as Garriot didnt have the funds. He was given almost 100% creative freedom with EA Deep pockets
I cannot agree. I played Ultima 7. I was not impressed.
The combat was really horrible, the gameworld was not cohesive, the lack of things like a quest journal or a good map made the experience CRAP and WASTED MY TIME, the story was unoriginal and failed at many key points when you weren't allowed to do anything that would actually resolve the plot or use magic the way magic would logically function which would have INSTANTLY resolved the plot. There was no reason why I couldn't accuse Batlan or kill Batlan. There is no reason why I couldn't immediately destroy the black gate, etc.
Ultima 8's story about having to betray every single virtue you stood for and doom a world to destruction so you could go back and try saving Earth and Britannia was a far more interesting story.

I am glad you shown all the Ultima games from the first two to the 3rd and 4th change the series. Even the ones like Ultima Underworld and other ones too. Good Old Games has the update graphics version of 4 free. Excellent video on this wonderful and classic RPG series.

I know the very early days of Ultima, the early 1980's and late 1979's may look like they are in pre alpha or beta in today's standards. But back then it's a fully polished game and revolutionary at that time, gaming was a new concept back then. Big respect to the pioneers , that evolved to the game we know and love at the later version of the games, for me the mid 1990's onward.
Some of the best games ever! Spent countless hours on these, and still frustrated that my soft diskettes of UltimaIII got corrupted from overuse! T_T Great share!! 👍💝👻

Wow, this brings back memories, thanks. Roamed around Sosaria for 8 months in 1986 in Ultima III because, at that time, there was no way to Google what to do next (at most are occasional tips in the PC section of newspapers). Played until Ultima IX but skipped VIII because the system requirements were too high for my PC back then. Liked Ultima and King's Quest.

Hey good for you for showing the original Apple ][ versions of the early games, along with the Mockingboard music.
So many of these retrospectives show the later releases, or releases on non-original platforms. Lord British did all his original coding on Apple ][ so this was his original vision.
One pronunciation note, I've heard Richard Garriott pronounce it "uh-KAL-uh-beth" which still sounds wrong to me, as I grew up calling it "ACK-luh-beth" (similar to the way you pronounce it in this video)
