I love this version, now the beggining of the pas de deux is so much clearer! The steps she's performing are moves meant for a pas de deux but she's dancing it alone by the will of Myrtha so that Albert feels compelled to dance with her

I am unfamiliar with Ratmansky's staging of Giselle but after this I would like to see more. There are very small changes that make the story clearer and more believable. The changes to Albrecht's first variation are interesting. I did miss his diagonal of brisés - there's a feeling of desperation and tiredness in that last appeal to Myrtha which is missing in the revised variation. Smirnova and Vlashinets were excellent. I'm hoping you posted an extract from Act I?!

I was so very fortunate to have been trained in the classical Russian style, starting at the tender age of three and continuing for many years until a spinal condition put an end to it all. But ballet lives in the center of my soul; I would not be the same person without it! I'm sorry if I'm being a bit saccharine here. I'm just moved to speak out when I see beauty in the world and when I see that someone else sees it too.
Giselle is really not Smirnova role. She's very contrived. It takes you out of the fantasy. I wish Gracheva, Antonicheva,Lunkina, Alexandrova and Kaptsova were still dancing/at the Bolshoi. They would have danced this version with great pathos.
Smirnova may be a wonderful dancer, but I feel that she may be lacking in her acting/facial expressions. I find it difficult to identify Giselle's emotions in Smirnova
@@BlyssfulSpirit I personally think Zakharova is not suited to Giselle, but for reasons different from Smirnova. But of course, we all have different preferences
I saw the whole Ratmansky Giselle inYT, it`s gone. Dont agree with Ratmansky at all, He has changed the II act into nonsense. I was realy frightend and angry about that. Myrta is looking something between boared and funny. If they would dance that in the romantic manner, it wouldn`t be necessary to "act" I agree with Ratmansky, becouse he brought back the old pantomimes in the first act and the dancers did it very well.

Yes, that opening in the lower part of the bodice does look funny. The kimono comparison is very apt, haha. Anyway, I like the Mariinsky version a lot, too. The Peasan pas de deux is very beautiful and includes a female variation I've never seen anywhere else. I wonder where it came from.

The dancing is tremendous! But am I the only one put off by the little mini wili wings? They look a little... silly.
They are rather droopy and bit distracting, to be honest.

Her costume is also very awkward. The bodice is strangely cut and the addition of those small diaphanous wings breaks the line of her splendid form.
