    I have both a modern dso and a old Tektronix crt analog dso. The new one is my go to but I learned a lot from the old one. Things that you would never have memorized like you do when using a old school scope. My Tektronix is from 1990, a whole 4K of memory. But it’s a 100 MHz scope. A crt scope is way better for looking at am signals than a modern dso. If I am ever working on anyone’s radios I always use the crt. It looks a million times better than the modern scope.
    Great video sir. You helped explain the oscilloscope to my nephew better than I could. Very well done 2 thumbs up 👍👍.

    Hello sir,
    First of all, great video thanks for that!
    .
    I am an electronics hobbyist and have 2 scopes.
    I tried to walk around and tried to avoid working with it.
    But now I had to measure a PWM signal.
    Now I did not get rid of it anymore and had to measure with the scope this time.
    ( I'm trying to make a PWM (AM) modulator, TL494 - IRF4905 )
    Now your video has been viewed and that helped me a lot!
    thanks again!
    friendly greetings from The Netherlands!
    Rob.

    I like how you showed how it can be used to troubleshoot a circuit that isn't working properly. I sure beats removing individual components and testing them which would be a pain if you had to desolder them.

      There is a saying: If your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
      This is why it's good to know what all the tools at your disposal are. Multimeters and scopes are a good foundation. Depends on what kinds of circuits you're working with but there are loads of other tools for different situations. Plenty of electronics repair channels to be found, and all of them will teach you something.

    ROBERT MURRAY SMITH,
    What circuit inside the oscilloscope will draw the horizontal voltage on the CRT screen?
    Because there is no horizontal oscillator or vertical oscillator used inside an oscilloscope so how can it draw a sinewaveform on the CRT screen?
    The Ramp circuit only controls the electron beam only to the CRT screen?

    @ashley mills .. I have a question for you.... how is it that the o'scope showed an alternating current pattern when you measured the AC adapter. I thought those adapters all put out DC which, if my understanding serves me correctly, should just show a straight line on the scope. Thanks!

    • @josephcote6120
      @josephcote6120 7 років тому

      In this case the wall wart is just a transformer. The rectifier and filter will be in the device that it connects to, if appropriate. You can tell this by the line on the adapter that says SEC 24V ~ 650mA. The ~ part means AC. If it was a DC output adapter the ~ would be replaces by a solid line underneath a dashed line.
      You are correct that a steady DC voltage will create a straight trace.

    I just scored a Tektronix 2467B, so chuffed! 400MHz and a microchannel plate CRT which can show ridiculously faint signals - the Tek marketeers christened it the "Brite-eye". If I have Art Garfunkel singing in my brain whenever I look at the thing I shan't be happy.... replacing a few (score) tantalum dip caps won't bother me, I don't think I'd be happy leaving the little blighters.

    is there a minimum bandwidth that you recommend?

    • @greywolf271
      @greywolf271 6 років тому

      depends on the frequency you're measuring. A long time ago with analog CROs, much was talked about and debated to the nth degree about rise time, even from a hobbyist point of view. Today, you can buy a very good fast digital for very much less than the old instruments
