I love starting off my day with one of your videos. Thanks for the fantastic improv tips as always. It sounds really lovely. This is inspiring me to try out a few new things :)
Very good thought about melody line holding off to return to the tonic too soon. A lot of pop songs use the I, vi, IV, V and don't explore many other possibilities and primarily use a deceptive cadence or half before doing the perfect cadence. I like the idea of traveling around a bit and holding off resolution. I never really thought about "Hark the Herald" doing that and yes what a great way to handle a melody line. This gives me much to think about and try out as my use of colorful chords has been too limited. Thanks for sharing your great wealth of knowledge, Chris!
Nice tutorial Chris. Good advice. I sometimes like to think of improvisations as variations on the melody rather than completely discarding the original melody and running the scales/arpeggios :)
Oh, man... how true about a phrase going to the one too quickly... I add predictably... I am annoyed how hard it is NOT to do it... old habits give the game away.
