Hello Colleen and Joplin! I enjoyed this video. I really enjoy train travel and DC is one of my favorite train stations. From what I understand emotional support dogs do not have the same access rights as a service dog. A person can take their emotional support dog with them on the airplane but as I remember they are not able to take their emotional support dog with them on Amtrak. I think that is very interesting.

Hmmm. I believe the Amtrack policy is that you would just need to call ahead and let them know you will be brining a service dog and what size it is. When you get to the station they should assist you in boarding and you would sit in the 'handicap' section so you and your companion would have more room. You can buy a ticket to take pets on Amtrack as long as they are contained in some sort of carrier. It is illegal for anyone to deny a true service animal in a public space at this time. People can only ask you "is that a service do?" and "What service does it provide?" Not quite sure of the policy you would have to double check, but they should not deny you a true service animal or contained doggie friend.....

Airplanes fall under the air carriers access act( ACAA) while other means of travel like amtrak fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA), ADA only permits task trained service animals to accompany their handlers into public, not emotional support animals. Now under the Fair Housing Act(FHA) emotional support animals are allowed to live with their owners in nonpet friendly housing for free so long as they have a note from their therapist for it and the animal can be any species mostly.

Do you need to buy a special ticket when you are accompanied by a service animal on a train?

No, there is no special ticket in particular. However it is best to let the company know you have a service animal when you purchase your ticket so that it can show up on your ticket. Service animals do not cost anything, but if you bring a pet on the train you do have to pay. It is much less of a hassle if you let them know about the service dog and preferred seating when you purchase than have to deal with the attendents on site.
