I bought an Ion Block Rocker 3 years ago. It does distort at max volume, but the battery still works and I am have no problems with it. I bought a Monster Rockin Rocker 3 months ago because of the cool look and features. After 3 months, the Monster's battery has already given out on us on. I'm so pissed. Now I have to find a receipt and go thru the trouble of trying to get it replaced. Just thought I'd share
Now the question remains...is the battery user replaceable on the Monster? I know it is on the ION. Overall it looks like the ION is the better deal, but the Monster does sound slightly better.
I was considering getting the Monster as a speaker to use for Bus rides from school to XC meets. The rides are usually quiet and we all want to chip in about $5 each and buy a solid speaker. I like how the Monster is more waterproof and seems more damage proof. But do you think it would be loud enough to hear the music from one end of the bus to the other when the bus is rolling? Thanks for the review!
The Monster Rocker 2 also has NFC support. There's a logo for it right on the top. Also, it is IPX4 waterproof, meaning it is effective against damage in light to moderate rain for at least 10 minutes.
I have purchased both units at my local Sam's Club to do my own sound tests as I couldn't decide which one was better by watching this video. Playing the same songs from the same source and using a sound meter, I agree that Ion is louder (108db) than the Monster (96db) at full volume. However there was a noticeable distortion on Ion while the bass on Monster was very crisp. So to level the playing field I have lowered the volume of Ion to be equal to Monster's full volume (96db). Ion's volume knob read just a hair below the 1st notch pass the mid-point. At this volume there was no distortion on Ion but bass sounded somewhat hollow and not as thumping as Monster. On the other hand, at this volume Ion Block Rocker clearly had better mids (vocals) and highs (treble). Since I couldn't make a decision based on sound quality as I would be sacrificing bass by choosing one vs mids and highs by choosing the other, I made my decision based on the futures and build quality, hence I chose Monster.
have you had any problems with it? I chose the Monster for the looks, base, and weather-proof features. However, I've seen so many negative reviews about the build quality. After 2 weeks of use, the battery leds stopped working. the speaker itself is beautiful compared to the Ion. But now I'm trying to decide whether to switch it out or get a refund and go with the Ion which is $50 less.
Tech support admitted to me they had a bunch of defective batteries. If your monster radio quit working remove back panel to get to the battery. Order a replacement battery in kind from Amazon....about 28.00. Wal La it is fixed.
Gursimran Singh It has been 5 months since my post and my Monster had no issues so far. I have used it quite a lot from taking it to the beach, to friends' parties (they loved it by the way), and it was even left outside once while it was raining at an outdoor party, and it is still going strong. Maybe I got lucky since I am hearing lot of people are having problems with the battery but if that happens to me in the future as I understand they are not hard to replace.
I've played with the EQ apps a lot on the ION (Spotify app has EQ for Android and iOS as well!!) and I've found these to be some pretty great settings for heavier bass without distortion > from left to right > 60:0db , 150:+1dB, 400:0db, 1k:--2db, 3k: -4db, 8k: -2db, 16k: -4db. Give it a shot. Also in Spotify's EQ, only turn on Bass, leave 3D, Clarity, and Concert alone... they just distort. Speaker and Source volume should usually be under 80%. It's usually more important to keep the source volume a lower first before lowering the speaker.

I'm getting the monster. i always used monster cables for my audio sounds system and never had a problem and great quality sound. they are on of the best when it comes to audio sounds
According to the specs of each of these speakers, the Ion IPA76C says it's 50 watts while the Monster claims 80 watts. Shouldn't the Monster be louder or at least play with less distortion than the Ion at same volume? The deal breaker could be the lack of a microphone jack (on the Monster) because it's always good to have P.A. capabilities.
Love this review. I'm a cheer coach and I actually brought the monster speaker while another one of the coaches for our program brought the ion both from sams club for a national competition to take to practice our routines . By the way the monster is on sale it's not noted in store but online it is it reads for $169.99 but rings up at register for $129.99 in store. I researched both speakers on SAMs club and saw the monster has more watts which automatically means to me more power must be louder. Now if anyone has seen bring it on it's literally 100's of other squads competing in the same practice area and trying to out shine the other. The monster speaker held up with the competition. But I did notice that when we which practice spots with my our squad and they use their speaker the ion it was louder and had more bass to it also. I did hear the static sound while playing the ion speaker. I was disappointed that the monster speaker who has 30 more watts wasn't lourder.
Hello dear coach,.. My name is Murphy and am chatting u from Nigeria. I wanna ask you some questions about this monster rockin' roller 3 speaker problem and how to solve it,... Mine is charging and showing battery level by the side but it no more coming up at the time and not working anymore! Sir I just want you to show me how I can fix it now
We bought a monster rocker last year for our volleyball season. It worked great until it stopped working. We found later through more reviews that the battery dies and won't charge anymore. The charging port won't even respond. I was sad because we were jamming out in practice as well as in games! Ugh
The Ion had much more distortion though at max volume, which made it sound like the speakers were blown, as if it was bottle-necking itself to TRY to be loud. I do like the Microphone factor though on the ion, just awesome! I honestly can care less about the austhetics of each, the sound is what matters and i personally liked the Monster better based on the Audio in this Vid.
Jacob Nelson About how loud can the Ion go up to without distortion? Because I'm guessing that would produce the same volume as the Monster on full blast.
yea that's pretty sweet if you can do that on the ion. i just re watched this and heard that. either way. they are both nice. and you can pair with a cable just so people know. can pair 4 of them probably with a cable.
i own two ion BlockRockers and they are build for long distance loud speaker ability. so up close they may sound a bit regular... stand 50 yards away and you'll hear the loudness. with two of them you can link them wirelessly so it turns your sounds into Right Left channel. and sounds really good! my kids play football and i play music during the games.( warm up, time outs, touch downs,) and it really motivates the kids... it motivates everybody really! i play it outdoors in 100degrees weather for 10 hours and the battery barely gets hit. super battery power!! must have!!
Sam's club has the Monster Rockin Roller 2 discounted at $129.99 until Jan 1/14/2016 or until they run out. Only different I see is the 2 has NFC. Hope to get mine next Weds.
FYI guys Bought a set and it works flawless. It's plenty loud for a get together or a backyard party! Battery has been great! played it for hours on high volume and still have tons of battery left! The app works for eq. IT IS THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!
I am looking for a speaker for myself and my over 50 senior group that dances in Flint MI. I would like to know how long dose the battery last. I understand you can use these units without eclectic. How long dose it last, thank you so much.
Tech support admitted to me they had a bunch of defective batteries. If your monster radio quit working remove back panel to get to the battery. Order a replacement battery in kind from Amazon....about 28.00. Wal La it is fixed.
Right on Alberto. Really, what kind of music was this to demonstrate sound. So many of these speaker videos on UA-cam use the stupidest music to demonstrate how they sound. LOL
greenclydefrog On the iPhone, you can EQ with no need for a separate app. On iOS 8.4 and up, go to Settings > Music > EQ. Both the Rock and Hip Hop settings work really well with the ION Block Rocker no matter what style music you're playing. With the EQ on the iPhone turned on, I've been really happy with the sound quality on the Block Rocker.
Just an aside, that link feature may very well have sold it for me cause what's better than a solid sounding speaker? .....Well 2 or more solid sounding speakers of course ;) !!!
bought the monster. horrible quality. idk if I got a bad unit or what, but it is going back to where I bought it. For reference, I work in an automotive plant. My coworker has an Ion explorer and it was louder than the Monster.
the Monster does not bottom out in the hertz range thus the monster has more bass and mids as the ION might have a slight more treble, also the Microphone jack is really not a deal breaker for the monster seeing all you need is a step down adapter for the monster, the other plus for the monster that you left out is the usb ports on the monster do power anything that can take uses a USB port for charging such as Iphones Ipads smartphones ETC.
+David Henry What is a step down adapter? (Please link one if you can) Also are you saying that using one would enable me to use a mic with the monster system? Thanks in advance!
mrtomanynicnames I believe the 2015 iPA76C can link together with the same models wirelessly with your bluetooth connection www.amazon.com/Ion-iPA76C-Bluetooth-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B016DYV8WU#Ask. The iPA76C2 Max can link via 3.5mm cable with many other speaker types as the host. The Monster is built like a tank which makes sense cause it's portable. I travel with mine every day for work and move it several times a day. Thanks for providing this review. My brother has the ION and loves it. As of 8/2015 has $30 Off Manuf Discount thru 8/30/2015, dropping price to $120.
Hi, does the ION Block Rocker have a hole underneath it such that it can be mounted by a standard speaker stand? Many thanks

bought two monsters and hooked them together via 2 aux cords and a headphone splitter and now I bump everywhere I go. ha
Nice. I will be getting the update version soon for review. I hope it has wireless sync like the ion
with two ion block rockers actually you can pair them together wirelessly and just play music with Bluetooth
yea that's pretty sweet if you can do that on the ion. i just re watched this and heard that. either way. they are both nice. and you can pair with a cable just so people know. can pair 4 of them probably with a cable.

K G 76c you can link 2 speakers together PLENTY LOUD FOR SURE!
How does this monster compare to the 100$ Monoprice speaker?
I am looking for a speaker for myself and my over 50 senior group that dances in Flint MI. I would like to know how long dose the battery last. I understand you can use these units without eclectic. How long dose it last, thank you so much.

I just bought the same ion block rocker recently, I was able to fix the distortion with an equalizer app.

noterepeat now you make me want to update to 8.4 firmware,. i'm on firmware 8.1.2 jailbreak.
Which one has more bass? Is the ion louder when you turn it to its maximum volume without distortion? Thanks!
+Gage Crews I found them pretty equal
Ion has it more, but the overall sound is muddy and mumbling, monster sounds more techno more speed
I bought the Monster, it is a "No Brainer" against the Ion..
I have the ipa76s version of this ION and this is the ipa76c, what's the difference???
Just an aside, that link feature may very well have sold it for me cause what's better than a solid sounding speaker? .....Well 2 or more solid sounding speakers of course ;) !!!

+Mendel Morgy he's referring to a 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter to use on the auxiliary port. Only lacks the ion's feature of mic and music at the same time
Great thorough review! Ultimately I'm going to purchase the ION. Thank you
just if you haven't notice you never mention anything about battery life would like to know other wise good review keep up the good work
What music were u playing? Song is great
which model can you connect to another ion speaker wirelessly and play on both simultaneously?
mrtomanynicnames the ion explorer outback speaker with the aux cable.
Once you said the two Ion's could link together wirelessly I was sold.
Make sure you get the correct ION model that does that. I have a 2015 Ion block rocker and love the hell out of it. It kicks ass.
MKrip808 which model is that that can play on both simultaneously?
mrtomanynicnames I believe the 2015 iPA76C can link together with the same models wirelessly with your bluetooth connection www.amazon.com/Ion-iPA76C-Bluetooth-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B016DYV8WU#Ask.

Monster does that too..
the block rocker has its own app so you can equalize the bass and sound with the volume
How long does it take to fully charge? I got my block rocker 3 days ago and so far it only works when it's plugged into the wall
you might have a defective battery. Replacements are cheap on amazon and easy to install.

i've made my decision..thank you for this vid!
can i used the speaker while charging?
Yes. Both do
yo quick question I've been looking up videos on this monster roller thinking about getting me one but have you heard the sound on Bose SoundLink portable speaker which one's louder?? if you know hit me back anyone thank you
monster Rockin roller 2 is better than bose soundlink. that bose product is really quiet
battery life?
The actually was an actual great comp video actually. If you actually like the actual differences of both actual units being compared actually to their actual differences.
Nothing about battery time comparison on these?
+jimbodunky the monster have 100 hours of batterie ;)
The ION HAS 50 hours
The new 2016 ION block rocker max now comes with a 100 hr battery.
I heard the ION IS GIVING ALOT OF TROUBLE WITH THE BATTERY LIFE AND THE MUISC DISTORTS AT 17?
really good review sir
Nice review. Thanks!

The problem was, without in-store testing, how would I decide which would better suit my needs.

What's AM radio.... Is it something for in the morning? Does either speaker have PM radio for later in the day? 😂
Taylor88 Productions

The ion has problems with the fuses
Well done my friend!
Thanks for the info.
Hey Tablets for me someone downloaded your video then reuploaded it and claimed it was theirs.
Thanks filled a copy write notice with youtube
I really wish you would spend time talking about sound quality and not just how loud it is.
the monster definentley has a sharper base. i know this cause I'am listening to this video on a monster 3.
and the Block Rocker offer a app to control it via bluetooth device.😎
Super helpful!
add comparison to the title.
It's Ipx4
Dude. Ya gotta stop saying "actual" and "actually"
Job
it would be better you play music not
that crap you had on
song choice was terrible
