Imagine being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers fresh out of college and coming to camp with NO QB Coach to work with and your starting veteran QB decides he doesn't feel it's his job to mentor you? -- That's the Mason Rudolph story folks. 📍
I'm happy this guy is finally getting his chance.
Not to mention he was then thrust into a starting role that same year. He's been knocked out cold by the ravens, hit with his helmet, booed out of the stadium, benched, demoted, released and demoted again. Everything that could cause a qb to have any fear has already happened to him and then some, and that fearlessness showed in the pocket on Saturday. If he's been doing his homework which it looks like he has he could be something. He always had a hell of an arm
@@zackamig4446he is a true competitor and deserves much respect, any real fan of the game or athlete knows most of these guys have persevered an insane amount to get to this level even the bottom guys in the league. Shout-out to Mason for always believing in himself
And with a offensive coordinator, who has no NFL playcalling experience. And his highest level of playcalling was Arkansas State. Playing for a head coach that benches you after six bad quarters of football.
@@zackamig4446u couldn’t of said it better let’s go dolph 🐬
QB1 type performance. I always believed in rudolph as a backup QB. But that performance was unexpected and incredible. Go Rudolph
Steelers fans overhated him for that Lions tie a few years back
He's not going to play hero ball, but he will put the stars on the offense in a position to shine
That's the closest thing to hero ball we've seen in Pittsburgh since Ben retired. Mitch and KP play zero ball.
I agree great game by mason for sure history shows this isn't who has been when he has played previously
Most back up qbs can get in and have a good game more or 2 not taking anything away from mr2 at all its just don't want ppl blowing this game out of proportion
The steelers are gonna go back to kp when he's healthy as they should mason does deserve another shot to play to let kenny heal its so late in the season we just need wins at this point
But #steelnation let's be realistic here either way i hope we win out🏈💯
@@jand1144if you average the last three games he started they come out this way. 5 tds to 2 ints, 282 yards per game, and 24 points per game.
@richardmckinney4963 I agree good numbers I blame tomlin on not going to him sooner or just making him the number 2 earlier mason could've beat ne or AZ
Like I said we need wins I'll take it and ask questions later
Mason's pocket presence has improved mightily. I remember watching him start in 2019, and he had really bad happy feet. He looks way more confident, and the dude has a cannon for an arm. The play at 4:36 is what really stood out to me. Kenny would have done his stupid spin to the left trick for a sack, but Mason just hung in there and delivered a strike.
I agree. He looked much more confident in the pocket than in the past. He withstood the pressure and went through his progressions. Remember, despite his time in the league, he's only had 11 starts. Mason has improved. I hope he really gets a chance somewhere next year.
I agree. That’s one of the few things I hated, was always on the move like Kenny does now. And sometimes threw the ball into a linebacker or safety sitting causing the receiver too get smoked. But based off this game he really has grown. Hope he gets the nod this week if Pickett is healthy. Would rather him play the year out
He doesn't have a cannon! He floats balls on a regular basis
One of the main reasons he was taken in the third round was because of his lack of arm strength.
Steeler and Mason fan btw
@@drewwilson6639He has above average arm strength, though.
@@drewwilson6639that throw to Pickens to the sidelines is cannon arm strength. He floats balls so receivers can run under them
Oklahoma State legend, loved watching him in Stillwater growing up so it’s good to see him succeed
go pokes!
Great break down, but You didn't show another play I thought was massive.
Steelers in own end zone, RB falls down before handoff and Rudolph fights his way out of end zone to prevent a safety.
He was a 3rd round pick and who was thrown into the fire for 1 year and never given another chance. Not saying he’s the guy, but he’s finally getting the opportunity to show us what hes got
Felt like the first time all year that the Steelers' QB was actually working through progressions every play.
Lol sitting there just laughing all game like ohhh yeah kenny would have spun into atleatst 3 pointless sacks with all these clean pockets Mason was getting. Kenny gets so lost when he has a clean pocket, Just doesn't make sense
@@mikerhem1273PREACH
@@mikerhem1273 nfl vs college is a complete different ball game im afraid that he has worked such a engrained mental clock from being behind such an bad oline last year of 123 make a play get it out or get out cause thats all hes had 90% of his career in the nfl with nfl defenders and hitters couple that with bad offensive calling the whole time where his reads and coaching has been sending him the completly wrong looks and reads. it might be that he needs to take a step back from getting beat up and be able to work those habits out for next season with a proper oc.
@@spencerscott6347 Yeah its much simpler for me. Hes to Short, and Leans far to much on the timid offensive aggression side. Also from my view it looks like 80% of the balls leaving his hands are soft wobblers and floaters. Its like he has no kinda pro velocity at all. In my opinion He will never get over those 3 flaws.
So it Should be a real short leash next year. He should know its no longer his team to lead. Next year should be his time to fight for a roster spot
I think it’s important to note that not every throw was perfect, but he looked like an actual quarterback and not a wide receiver throwing a wobbler straight at a defender on a trick play like a certain Trubisky tends to do.
10 yard slant and out balls came out smoking hot. We usually get nothing but Slow wobblers from damn near all Kenny short throws. Feels nice to see heat for once
Nice JT always knowledgeable
RUUUUUUUUUDOLPH
Player of the week!!! Im a browns fan
Congrats on going to the playoffs. From a Steelers fan.
I spent a good amount of time at Steeler training camp and Rudolph was unquestionably the best QB.
You have to remember they dont have high level offensive staff .Id love to see what could be with a competent coaching staff
Execution depends on the WR to know the Down and distance. Run past the sticks to give the indication of a 9 then curl, or stick back towards the sticks. Can't blame the Coaches, This is on the receiver! Mason was hitting DIMES ALL NIGHT!
@@MrJimmydean1The scheme is too simple, basically speed outs all day. But yes, it's clear that the WRs need more awareness.
it's obvious that it's INFINITELY better than when canada was calling the shots. I'd be curious to see where they could go with things with more stable QB play than mitch could give them. Kenny got one game with them and looked great. mitch stunk up the joint for 3 games, then mason looked even better. I wouldn't be surprised if they kept expanding the playbook/calls as either QB got more comfortable.
@@MrJimmydean1I somewhat disagree. I believe coaching is part of the problem with their WR’s not hitting the first down markers. The speed outs, if it’s a 3rd and 12 and in practice, these things are made to be 10 yards, that’s not on the WR or QB…why are you as a coaching staff, calling a play where you know the routes are 10 yard timing routes!
Mason should be the starting QB for real and he will only get better and better period !!! I seen him even pick the ball up off the ground from it being hiked back to him and then complete that pass
I absolutely love these analysis videos. Your understanding of the game is very impressive. Really like how u make these videos. Best stuff out there boys and girls.
When did this guy ever play QB?
@@chrisspearline767 bro stop. Even the practice squad QB has a better understanding of football than you'll ever have.
@@shibity yeah the Monday morning QB is always right. That's what you and this guy are
@@chrisspearline767 lol. No idea.
@@chrisspearline767 lol you sound stupid
Mason looked better than Mitch or Kenny. Yes there were a few mistakes that most fans are not gonna see. Like that missed pass to DJ right before the half. However... This is Mason's first game in a long long time. I believe Mason seized his opportunity and until he loses the job the quarter back position should be his. #8 has his moments but I honestly don't think he's the answer
The difference between Mason and Kenny that I saw was mostly in the confidence department. Not saying Kenny doesn’t have it, but he doesn’t have enough of it to take the big risks. Rudolph has that confidence and then some.
Rudolph has nothing to lose imo. I still feel like Kenny was told to be more conservative this year as we won games with our defense but I’d love to see him be aggressive. We saw some of it in the bengals game
It really makes the sham of a "QB competition" they held last teaining camp come to light. Absolutely no way Trubisky deserved to start the season. Glad to see Rudolph playing like a QB3, meaning he knew this might be his only tape so didnt hold anything back. I hope he continues showing off and either gets an authentic competition in Pittsburgh or gets a deal elsewhere
Not bad for a guy who hasn’t played a game in 2 years. And even the one game he did play in 2 years ago he found out the night before the game that he was starting. He hasn’t started a game where he knew he was starting and got all of the practice reps since 2019 in only his second year. Mason hasn’t ever gotten much of a chance but he looked really good and he’s got all of the attributes you would want in a prototypical QB.
Will be rooting for Mason on Sunday. All glory to God.
Great breakdown!
For not starting in two years, a solid Rudolph performance.
Hoping to see a little more gameplan on week two against Seattle (ex: building off the speed outs as you noted with CAT/Hinge/Sluggo/Wrap in) and maybe since 14 gets all the attention, a plan more focused on 18 and even, gasp... TE/88 (It seems like the Canada playbook doesn't acknowledge that the TE is an eligible receiver!)
I'm sure he'd love to have that slot fade to Johnson back again!
We'll see what he does on week two once the opponent has film on him.
Last random thought: Rudolph seems to have a better pocket presence than Pickett (who appears to bail after his first read often).
Would love to see less mirror pass concepts
19:43 scared the absolute shit out of me. Thanks.
Always had confidence in him die hard oklahoma state fan, just let him air it out he has a mean deep ball, but ive never seen the throw he made to george pickens some pretty close but that throw was a pro QB 1 throw.... no other back up can make that throw!
Don't bet against Rudolph around Christmas
We definitely starting playing conservative towards the end for no reason, but I liked how he looked back to back weeks💪🏼
i made a few memes of you commenting on the steelers wr antics from a couple of weeks ago and you're commentary was spot on lol
Love the breakdowns! We need a Joe Flacco breakdown next!
Got to give credit to the haters that said the steelers were not going to make it to the playoffs...True reality, i love it, makes us tougher and stronger...Go Mason.....🖤💛💯👍💪
Really enjoy your videos. I love learning as much as I can about the specifics of the game. Hopefully they will use the almost overuse of the speed out routes to set up an out and up route if they get the right look. And it would be great if we could get better depth on their routes, especially on 3rd downs. It was great to see Mason come out and have such a great performance. You're absolutely right about the scheme. I've even heard from other former QB's that have broken down the Steelers that they don't actually have many play options for each formation. So basically when a team sees the personnel group and formation, they know it is basically one of two or so plays. I wish they would have fired Matt Canada before the season. But here's hoping Mason can have a similar performance this Sunday🤞🤞🤞 Definitely appreciate the breakdowns!!✌️❤️🫡
this was a nice analysis.
Dig the URT shirt your rockin JT, Hoo Yaa!!
Gnar
good analysis again
Rudolph was supposed to be the error apparent of Ben but it didn't materialize when he got in that fight playing the browns and got hit in the head with his helmet. It went south every since then but he looked really good. I'm hoping that he'll work out because I'd hate to have to look for another quarterback cuz I'm not 100% on Kenny
Heir apparent
You already know we want to see BROCK!!
Do we need to see those INTS again?
Hope he dies on his next away game😂
@@davestier6247yea we do. He was making preseason videos of trey struggling but if purdy struggles no video. What kind of shit is that
Nobody wants to see a game manger
prob patreon tomorrow
omg I was praying u did this one!!!
Huge test against Seattle, but if he could keep up even two TDs in the next two games, without turning the ball over, he could very land himself a starting job with a team next year. Lots of ifs in that scenario, but so far, not impossible.
Well for 1st game he looked very well ! I seen many miss open receivers when Big Ben was at QB and he was the number 1 QB
The video I’ve Been Waiting For..
🤞🏾 #STEELERSnation I couldn’t watch the game but I hope Mason Did As Well As It Looked On Highlights
Hopefully Love’s performance earned him a JT video this week too!
Yes!!
JT? Can you tell me who that is?
@@Dang026JT is the guy you are watching
I don’t think Diontae was “angry”. It was one of those “oh man I had him” type of reactions. You can see he was really “angry” as he came back to the huddle. This film here is cut short
He has those reactions a little too often imo. I think you are right about his intent, but I think the body language (especially when these guys are sitting around watching film the next week) can rub people the wrong way.
Mason Jar Rudolph is A Start for the rest of the season.
I know you don't watch the Steelers all the time JT, worth noting the reason for all the outside passes here is probably because Pat Freiermuth tore the Bengals a new one up the middle a few weeks back. They were not going to let that happen again but it left them open to the speed outs. Now, this plays into Rudolph's strengths. A really good arm, he's always been good with the deep ball. What he's struggled with is intermediate passes. If he pays against the Seahawks I guess we'll see if he's improved there.
What's interesting to me in this game is how often it's Allen Robinson playing outside and how often Diontae Johnson is in the slot on these passing plays. That feels new to me.
Old school here.
Back in the day, new QB s sat bench, watched and learned. Today's expectations, 1st rounders start day 1. Today a # 1 is given room to grow, make mistakes and grow, and 2 - 3 years before you write them off. KP , I believe is a starter. MR , I believe is also a starter. Tribiski has foot work and timing issues, relying too much on his arm and athletic ability, but with a strong coach could be a starter, with work. What are your thoughts?
Trubisky as a starter is a good joke
We got one good week of playcalling, and after Pickett got injured, it felt like the Steelers went straight back to the Canada playbook. That's not cutting it. You don't throw out what was working because you think your backups can't handle it. Now Trubisky really couldn't handle it, but even if he was still out there, you gotta keep calling the plays that work. It feels like fear from the playcalling staff.
As always excellent stuff here.. but as a fan of the Steelers I will say that the score of the game may have dictated some of the repetitive speed outs during the 4th q. Why show more on tape for opposing teams to scout? Especially with a 3 possession lead in the 4th.
As a Steelers fan I haven’t been a big fan of either Trubisky or Rudolph the past few years but when Rudolph showed up and performed this week you know the Steelers are considering giving him another look when Pickett comes back
Thank god they are hiring a new offensive coaching staff
I agree coach needs to scheme the 3rd down passing better💯
Can we get a video of Mason week 17 and playoff? Would like to hear your opinions on how he played those games.
6:00 Mason Rudolph displays great leadership there not throwing to 18. leadership means knowing your perople and putting them in positions they will shine in. Diontae SUCKS at breaking tackles when needed. He has such a huge tendancy to run backwards, great Rudy tucked and ran.
I'm pretty sure they ran that 'trick or poach' concept later in the game. Mason over threw Diontae. In the first instance Mason had the LT bull rushed into his face and took the check-down.
Also, Diontae had 5 targets and 2 completions, so being the immature and selfish baby he is, that was his reaction to getting outshined by big-play Pickens.
@@krzykrisit kinda sucks that all our receivers have to have the exact same amount of yards and touchdowns or the ones with less will throw their pissy fits
What I'm seeing for next is possibilities for the offense. The Steelers finally opened the downfeild. Meaning the running game and the center field should get a bump from safeties and line backers hesitating and staying back a bit. More game opens more game.
At 19:16 Mason had a great pocket and 14 should have ran upfield versus one-on-one and single man high.
They gave up on him too early. Had Washington too. Wasted years.
I need to see the BY9 review 🙏🏾
Offensive plan has been bad all year, but you still have to execute it. Mason did it better than the other two QBs on the team.
Kenny had ONE game without Canada and balled out. Did Mason do well? Sure. Relied heavily on GP to do it, but whatever. But a lot of people seem to be hitting Kenny with strays for no reason. Dude did really well all things considered WITH Canada, and did a whole lot better in the 1 game without him. Only QB who's been stinking up the place is Trubisky.
@@definitelynotlawlcano5256 that’s the thing, he didn’t do “really well”. Offense averaged 16 points per game. That is not “really well”. Is Canada’s system shit? Yes. Can a good enough QB execute that system? Yes. Mason is still playing with Canada’s system. That hasn’t changed. Still need to execute and score touchdowns.
@03Man11 I'm gonna add more punctuation to make it clearer for you. All. Things. Considered. He. Did. Really. Well. Under. Canada. Comparing post-canada Rudolph who has the benefit of them tweaking plays to get the stink of Canada off of them to Pickett playing UNDER CANADA is beyond stupid. All things considered, pickett did well in a bad system with an OC that shouldn't even be coaching in peewee calling the plays.
@@definitelynotlawlcano5256 literally, nothing has changed. Same simples plays Canada was calling. They’re still throwing go routes on 3rd downs when it’s man coverage. Nothing has changed, only the execution.
@03Man11 if you think they're still calling jet sweeps and bubble screens on 3rd and a mile.. or run plays from shotgun on 4th and goal.. when literally none of that was called against the Bengals... Eddie and Sullivan have been tweaking plays, from formation to motions, even the players have said so. Eddie and Sullivan do not call the same type of plays at the same times that Canada would and not get a single first down until the 3rd. Comparing a QB or offense as a whole under Canada to one that is using 90% the same playbook but called by competent people, and calling it apples to apples, is ridiculous. The only logical thing I can come up with is that you've never played football, and probably just started watching recently.
The Ringer dude
Tomlin will tell you …he’s a “backup” Lmao
As always JT love the content. U looking for an offensive coordinator job. Maybe quarterbacks coaching job. Lol.
Great Channel &Optics/ Evaluation but I think you have to take into perspective --> The O-Lines Play. We have been weak all year thoroughly and Dan Moore is a weak link as well as others. It is what it is at this point until the next off-season. Great job overall Bro I'm loving the detailed analysis. I coach 6th grade football & have a 1.5 yr old I'm interested to see how the Game Evolves.
One thing to keep in mind is that our quarterbacks have made the o-line look even worse. Mason knew to stay firmly in the pocket and let the horseshoe develop around him, whereas Kenny and Mitch were bailing out way too early, they weren’t in the spots they needed to be, and were making it harder for the line. When your quarterback isn’t where he is supposed to be, that makes it infinitely harder for the line to hold the pocket around him.
You did both qb’s vs cinci, Kenny Pickett & Mason Rudolph. which qb do you think looks better ?
The coaches to to coach them to get over the 1st down and hinge back that’s on the coaches to coach them to get over the 1st down markers period
I hope the Steelers fix the offensive "schemes" this coming offseason......
By the by, PS will be interviewing for an OC. Would you consider sending in your resume'.
Good job.
Bryce next!
Mason Rudolphhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
He played three horrible defenses in his three starts. He gets a true test of accuracy and arm strength in God awful weather this week.
Defense didn't want to give us the middle.
So you were the same guy ragging on Canada's offense with Small-Hands & Mitchell, to Paraphrase, called it BASIC (essentially not an effective offense). So, that being said Professor, why did it take a third string QB to make the two First-Round Draft picks (at QB) look responsible for getting the OC FIRED (Not to mention look like Bums)??? Just giving ya a hard time my man. I been watch Steeler football over 43 Years I don't need the all 22-44-66 to know that those with talent and work ethic WIN. And those that can't play? . . . the fan base blame the OC. But not me! Nice Vid
How does the HC and OC and QB coach not see this sort of performance prior to injury forcing their hand?
10:20 wow that was a 50 yard throw
Hope you keep that same weekly Energy for the Brock Purdy videos . Dont stop now lol 😂
patreon. balla
Everything except the point at the end 😁😆😅 he's 22 years old, having the most success in his young NFL career, let the kid have fun.
My own thought I ain't got nothing wrong with Kenny Pickett but he ain't NFL ready they should have tried Mason at the beginning of the year. Kids been there for 3-4 years behind one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and you never use them except for practice it's probably why the defense is always so good with half ass people in most positions
Almost like the steelers still dont have a good offensive coordinator or something
14:10 it looks to me at time Mason glances past Dionte to the check down he isnt that separated. plus you got the safety goin his way as well. so im just sayin that i dont think it was that big of a miss. not as it played out, nor at the time of his release it woulda had to been a great throw and he possibky didnt wanna become Mitch.
Immediately following game Rudolph divulged that this was the first time he has ever had 7 days to prepare for a game under Tomlin. Before this he had 24hrs or minutes.
He deserves to play these last 2 games fully without a leash like the other 2 QB's...let him play damnit.
Great breakdown. Bailey Zappe video?
DJ is constantly running the wrong routes and disconnected with every QB. At 14:00, likely not Mason. DJ does a lot to complaining for a guy who has serious ball control issues. By the time that window was there, he had 91 coming from the blind side. Read thru progressions, running out of time, made a decisive throw. Could it have gone for 6? Maybe. But I’d rather have a QB be decisive and calm, rather than panic.
Pls tell me we are getting an analysis on Young’s 300+ day
Mason is the future, let us all remember where we were this occured
Because Mason has accuracy issues he needs at least one WR that can track and adjust while the ball is in the air.
No he doesnt
I don't get why you hate on 18 so much when he works harder than 14 and (with the exception of this past week) actually produces.
When are you going to post the Baltimore game?
It’s not crazy to say that he has one of the best deep balls in the league. His college tape showed it and it’s always been the case in the league
Very Jeff Blake like. A lot of loft.
Dionte Johnson has all the tools needed to be an elite reciever, but his tendency to make frequent mental errors prevents any type of consistency.
Any of my other fellow oldhead/football guys in the comments here can correct me if I'm wrong, but the mistakes made in this offense scream that individual rules on individual plays aren't nearly detailed enough (ie angles in the screen game being atrocious), the detail isn't empasized in teaching sessions, players not being accountable to detail, or a healthy mix of all 3?
It drives you mad bc refining your details is the easiest fix in football. I can fix an angle or emphaze situational aweness but I can't teach what #14 & #18 can do.
Rudolph did a great job. Hope he torches the Seahawks like he did the bungals.
I don’t question you much but please tell us a “high level” WR unit that has guys not reacting when they’re wide open and the qb elects to check down
Miami, cincy, rams, Minn, prob a lot more too.
You do analysis on Rudolph but can’t do a video on Flacco?
Bryce young plzzzzz!!!!!
You need to do Purdy, Lamar and mahomes
Bryce next !!!!!!
You mentioned you played for 11 teams in the NFL, first off congrats that’s just unbelievable, but what teams were they?
Relax Johnson probably would have dropped the pass anyway
Rudolph's nose was shining
QB #1 - Mason is 1st tier QB
They should go get Russ
Pickett has more than twice as many starts as mason and has 1 game close to this. He could not put it in the endzone though. Mason his first start in 2 years and does more than kenny in 20+, Has 1/3 of the TDs kenny has this year with 10+ starts in 1 game.
Not trying to be a prick, but you haven't done a single vid on any Browns QB all season and that's been really disappointing as a Browns fan. I was really hoping to hear your opinion on how Watson was playing, but with him obviously being out for the season now, I'd love to see you break down what Joe Flacco has been doing for this team over the last few weeks, and I'd like to hear your opinions on his interceptions and what he can (or can't) do to bring those down.
Although I would rather hear you talk about some of his INTs from previous games as both of the picks he threw against the Texans were meaningless turnovers that happened in the final 90 seconds of the first half...one of which was just a hope and a prayer toss into the end zone with zero seconds left on the clock before halftime because we didn't have a kicker for this game and therefore couldn't even attempt a field goal in that moment.
To my untrained eye, Flacco didn't put the ball in jeopardy really at all against the Texans, while he seemed to do that quite often in his previous few games with the Browns. I'd be interested to know if you think that is a sign of him improving as he gets more comfortable with this team and this offense...because with no run game whatsoever to speak of, we won't be able to survive 2 or 3 INTs per game from Flacco in the playoffs, even with our exceptional defense.
Speaking of having no run game, I'd love to hear your opinion on that as well...even though I know you aren't "Running Back School" or "O-Line School". I'd just like to hear your thoughts on why this team literally can't even get a single yard on each rushing attempt at this point. My opinion is that while the O-Line is really struggling with our 4th and 5th Tackles starting, Jerome Ford is not even a DECENT NFL running back. He seemingly has no vision AT ALL. Never in my life have I seen a guy miss more wide-open cutbacks to instead run straight into his O-Lineman's ass for -2 yards time and time again. But maybe your professional opinion is that the O-Line is the main problem and Ford isn't as terrible as I think he is.
If the Browns had nobody but Nick Chubb back off of our huge list of IR players, this team would absolutely be a Super Bowl favorite...right there with the Ravens and 49ers. But with how terrible our run game is right now, my fear is that the total lack of ANY rushing attack is going to be what gets us bounced out of the playoffs early and prematurely ends this magical season. Anyway...love your vids! Been a subscriber since about 5,500 and it's awesome to see how much your channel has blown up over the last year or so. Definitely well-deserved!
Watson doesn't deserve to be discussed. Doesn't even deserve to be in the league.
Pretty sure he’s done Browns analysis on patreon.
One game and they are happy 🤦
