literally couldn't ask for a better first time in the dunes... hearing the iconic message being played with the barely visible shadow of a reaper in the distance gave me goose bumps, this will forever be one of my favorite games of all time and seeing people play it for the first time brings me immense amounts of joy

I just have to say, I appreciate that Gem doesn't "overreact" and freak out like all the people that claim to have thalassophobia. I realize many do have that, but a lot of people just ham it up for the views. That can be funny and entertaining at times, but Gem is unapologetically herself and I love that. I'm sure there will be moments of panic and fear, which I do look forward to, but it seems like she is truly enjoying the game as it's meant to be enjoyed. Take things at your own pace and enjoy the experience because you will only get to play this game for the first time, once.
All I hope for moving forward is that chat stops spoiling things for her. Mentioning specific creatures or locations by name, like asking if she has seen a Reaper yet or telling her that this is Reaper territory especially, IS DEFINITELY A SPOILER! If you're in chat, PLEASE don't do that with any other creatures or locations. In the last episode SO MANY people started telling her that the alien structure was a gun, before she figured it out and/or became obvious! A big part of the enjoyment with this game comes from exploring and discovering the unknown. Help when she asks for it, but be as vague as possible! Spoiling the game through any means not only lessens the experience/impact for her when discovering something she was completely unaware of, but also for the viewers who want to see the completely blind reaction to it.

I agree, really well said. I like that she isn't pretending to be scared of things just because people are saying she will be scared. It's so obvious when streamers fake reactions and I'd rather just see a natural playthrough.
And you absolutely read my mind with the last part. I saw early in the chat someone mention the repear and it annoyed me. Atleast be a little cryptic about things... Like just say "has she seen IT yet"... We all know what you mean

You’re entirely right, but this is only necessary because streaming lends itself to this problem. When I compare offline playthroughs of this kind of game with live-streamed ones, it’s quickly apparent that it takes serious moderator resources to keep people from being people.
What’s worth more? The magic of the game experience, or the immediate convenience of a chat’s guidance in a singleplayer game?

Fun fact: The voice actors ordering a sandwich are actually from a UA-cam channel called Neebs Gaming, they played the game really early on before the story was complete so the game devs asked them to do voice acting in the game. For the respawning question, inorganic resources generally don't respawn. However, if your game resets a part of your map (used to happen with updates leading people to think resources respawned), then it will generate the resources again.
But the devs have said that they don't respawn, although small fish do respawn slowly.

I *think* the 'ham and cheese sandwich/regular' interaction was something that was added in response to a youtuber who did this whole roleplay subnautica playthrough with a customer support guy from the company back on earth who kept getting distracted by super mundane things while he was fighting for his life.

    • @Action_E_Gaming

The “ham and cheese sandwich” guys name is appsro an the guy in the background is neebs they both come from the UA-cam channel neebs gaming your are correct during the play through they did apprso was playing and neebs was playing a customer support guy who would commonly get distracted by things like cataracts, the name of a beacon or submersible, the name of a creature, scanning things trying to kill appsro, Mexican pointy boots, and why apprso doesn’t do farming while not on call with neebs. Neebs is commonly the one causing appsro to seem like an idiot in the series because neebs doesn’t act like he understands the need to focus on survival rather then researching or nagging appsro to get o2 tanks while appsro is focused on gettin resources to help him survive. Neebs gaming was one of the UA-camr beta testers that the creators of subnautica brought in near the beginning of the games beta and neebs gaming played all the way up to when they added the games ending after that the creators of the game loved the world they had created in their game so much they gave neebs gaming an important but partially joke message because they wanted to show both the characters that appsro and neebs had created so they had appsro be The one attempting to be giving you the actual information you need while neebs is in the background being a distraction to both the player and apprso making it comical in a way. Sorry that I sent such a long message but if you do read all of it then I thank you for reading through my ranting about a UA-camr I like.

I would also add that during Appsro's playthrough of Subnautica, when Neebs was not "at work" to take his Appsro's "distress call" sometimes two other members of Neebs Gaming would feature.
Doraleous (or Thick?) would answer Appsro's distress call as a janitor for Alterra and while Appsro was battling for his life asking for help, Dora would just moan about how he keeps finding piles of sick every where, and has to keep covering them over with towels. By the third time this is happening, Dora mentions he is running out of towels🙂
And also Simon would answer the call as a pizza delivery guy delivering pizza, who knew nothing. _"I don't know what's going on man, this phone was ringing so I picked it up!"_ . He ended up being more helpful than Neebs and got hired by Alterra.

@ your mixing a few things up but you do have the right idea. Simon and thick both worked for altara already neither as a Janitor you might be remembering thick pushing the survey to appsro as him talking about sick, and your remembering Simon calling appsro trying to order pizza as Simon trying to take appsros order. The pizza guy was actually Dora who made up that he worked for altara and was just a delivery guy who picked up a phone and pretended to work there and ended up being more helpful and got hired sadly the only reoccurring altara helpers were Simon and needs thick only showing up once as a Cameo and Dora showing up about 3 times 2 of which he was not working for altara

As for O2 usage: Real world scuba divers use a rule of thirds that is 1/3 going in, 1/3 coming out, and 1/3 as emergency reserve to manage their air.

The air bladder is incredibly valuable. It can provide a little bit of oxygen directly to you, but it's usually better to use it to propel you to the surface. So the oxygen can help in a cave, but in open water it's best to keep you from drowning if you forget how deep you are or how little oxygen you have left. Even if you do keep track of those, you can also use it strategically to stay deep longer than would normally be safe. I think it propels you up approx 100-150m if I remember correctly?

    • @bugnazbinnyking1198

Yeah I really rate the Air Bladder.
+15 seconds of air (which sometimes really makes a difference. Even for casual "gardening out side my base" when you think you can make the airlock, and don't). But also for the rapid ascent, which I think does about 170m.
      I always carry two.

I think she did fantastically well exploring the LP17 Wreck.
I struggled on that one a lot (through several playthroughs, across all platforms).
I thought for sure we were about to witness a mishap.
In critique, she took ages to spot the first door on the right wall despite going in and out several times, to the point where I sat up in my chair and started DiCaprioPointing wondering if they'd patched the game and blocked over the entrance point. Until I wound it back and realised she just hadn't looked at that wall at any point.
And she went past the Modification Station Fragments so many times, which I found quite agitating, despite me also pointing (normal pointing). Always direct to the corner with the arm, or the hole in the floor, every time.
You have to "paint" each wall and floor in turn, with your nose. As if your little snoz is a scanner itself 👍(the prompt distance is shorter than a lot of player seem to realise)
But in her praise, her mapping and getting in and out was excellent. Her line out, even on the first exit (after the stairs issue), really was the "racing path", just straight lines to each point (no need to orientate or rotate herself). And she learned the routes and connections instantly as soon as she experienced them. A summary of what knowledge she'd gained each trip, and straight back in. Bravo 💪 ✨(while narrating for our entertainment too)

Power does NOT go down simply because it's night, it's simply not charging at night. Your spotlight takes power and the scanner technically takes a tiny amount even when turned off (way more when actively scanning). Each power type has a different supply; solar gives 75, for example. Either have enough solar panels that you have enough reserves to survive the night, or add alternative power sources.
    My strategy:
    1) 2-4 solar panels early game (below 100m they quickly become ineffective). These are passive and cheap, but only create power during the day and provide the lowest power supply, so you need enough to survive the night if you use a lot of power or do a lot of crafting at nighttime.
    2) 1 thermal reactor if a vent is nearby or I can string transmitters to it (which you learned in the mushroom forest), otherwise I'll skip it. This is a most powerful optic that is passive day or night, but you are reliant on having or reaching a heat source.
    3) 1+ bioreactor (which take fish, seeds, plants, even eggs); sometimes more if I want to have lots of things like lights, etc. This is easily the most powerful power source in early/mid game, it just requires catching or producing organic matter to fuel it, so it's not passive like the first two. Different organic matter provides different amounts of energy, too. Veterans min-max the organic matter to make the most out of it and thus several bioreactors are totally fine for the entire game, even with a full-sized base.
    4) 1 ABCXYZ power source (you haven't learned yet) in the mid/late game. The most powerful option of them all, completely passive and dependent on nothing but your ability to craft it's components. It's just expensive and usually found much later in the game.
I like having a variety of power sources just to be on the safe side, especially if I have lots of power-consuming decoration/features. Power is consumed in the order that it was created, so if you build solar>thermal>bioreactor>4th then the power gets consumed in that order as well, which makes the 4th more like "emergency" reserves if built that way.
Your seaglide light will consume a small amount of power, but usually not enough to worry about; you generally only notice it above ground if using it as an actual flashlight; propulsion consumes the bulk of power underwater. Vessel lights do not consume power when idle, so don't worry about the seamoth. Light and sound can attract hostile attention, but most creatures ignore it.

The massive wreck had one additional area you didn't find. If I remember correctly, the vent tunnels you crawled through that led between larger rooms had a 3rd branch off that led to another room. I believe there is just one piece of decoration you can get there. Otherwise, I think the wreck is 100% explored.
Also, none of the "claw/finger" arms that chat was talking about are scannable there at any point in the game. Those are the default arms for the machine they go to and a remnant from early release where you needed like 20 different basic arm fragments to unlock it. But they removed that feature when Subnautica V2.0 was released late 2022 and made it so you just need to scan 4 body fragments itself. There are special arms you CAN scan, just not the default/basic ones, and probably won't find them until after you have the default machine unlocked.. However, the basic arms were left in the game even though you can't scan them anymore.

At 3:42, BE HAPPY ! the game used to be a lot "Less Obvious". In fact, as someone who's played this since it first went into Early access, let me just say you're lucky. The "Mobile Vehicle Bay" USED, to be a literal standstill because with out it, none of the larger vehicles can be made. I personally spent 3 FULL DAYS, looking for the parts. Finally the wiki page helped me. Since then, they've placed those pieces near the beginning so as to not stall your progress in the game. Also, if you don't know how to build something, assume there's a tech piece you have to build first. If you can find the "Purple Mushroom Biome" it doesn't really fill in the story much if at all. But there's lots of things to scan there that will help you out. Warning. It's scary as hell though. Worms. Euugh..

There's a *major* story beat in the purple mushroom biome that she'll get directed toward if she chooses to follow the current story markers she has. Of course nothing wrong with going out of order or finding it on her own, but there is definitely a part of the story there.

You can grow pretty much every plants you find. Underwater plants need planter that's Underwater.
For the bio reactor I always use those pink mushrooms you saw on that island.
Cut plants with knife to get seeds.

I love Subnautica streams so much!! I already missed it so badly after I’d finished ep 1 that I went back through my history and rewatched other creators old Subnautica videos lol! Though I’m totally a stream/vod watcher now, watching edited content over quieter/chill stream vods was making me want more gem vods even more haha

The pathfinder tool is incredibly useful if you actually remember to use it as you're going into and travelling through a cave. I almost never remember and I think most people don't, but it does its purpose significantly better than a Minecraft compass even with a lodestone.

LOL I did the exact same thing with making my base next to the stalkers and then getting them popping through the walls and chomping on my seamoth. The upside is that they will chew on your base (which does not damage the base) and drop their teeth right outside your door!

  • @mattlewandowski73
    @mattlewandowski73 3 місяці тому

Gem, foundations, reinforced panels, and bulkheads give you improvements to your structural integrity. As chat told you, as long as you stay above 0 you are fine, but if you let your integrity drop, the base can start springing leaks you have to repair once you increase your integrity. Enough damage to the base due to low integrity, and the base implodes.

I don't think reading everything on the spot as you acquire the info is that critical. It does expand the overall experience of the game, showcasing the critical thought that went into designing not just a theoretical ocean world, but a planet with a thriving ecosystem. That much is _true,_ but the best way to play a game for the best possible experience is to play it for yourself, at your own pace. If you get to the end of this, and think it was a worthy experience overall, then the sequel is highly recommended. I think you'll like the protagonist in that one; since she's a little more fleshed out as a character, too. 😄

Little tip for later, if you get a gel sack ( believe thats what its called they are little green balls with purple spots) plant them in an exterior grow bed because they are the best fuel for a bioreactor. You can hit them twice with your knife and then pick it up and plant the spores you get from knifing it while still using the sack for the bioreactor.
