The basic idea is that although there are two tournaments a school year, one in summer and another in march, a majority of third years retire before the second tournament to focus on their studies. It means that you will be losing some of the characters from other teams, like a few guys from Dateko, but a majority of people who are extremely passionate about volleyball will stay on, especially those who want to go professional or aren't planning on going to university.
I’ve just googled it and Spring tournament is in the very beginning of January. It was in March since it started in 1970 for many years, so people still call it spring tournament even though they change the schedule. Said google(*^◯^*)
Academically go to universities. Im pretty sure scholarships athletes play on. Im sure oikawa and ushiwaka has no choice but to stay on as they are elites and need to show off for better scholarships as other third years like seijohs ace and shiratorizawas middleblocker doesnt plan on going to college(spoiler) or to not let their team down, or hey passion lols.
" I don't play volleyball for merit. " That answer from Sugawara always brought chills on my spine. It's surprising that the one who hesitates the most to stay was Daichi but I guess it's understandable because he's the captain and he was thinking about the future of Karasuno. But what Sugawara did to rile him up was brilliant, which basically saying BUT WHAT DO YOU WANT DAICHI? FORGET ABOUT THE TEAM, THE FIRST YEAR OR SECOND YEAR. I love it. This show is not a groundbreaking show with a lot of unexpected twist and turn. It's not. But it just hits every single aspect of story almost perfectly. That's why Jacob's comment in the end is also perfect. I'm sure people have doubts when they started watching the show because of weak premises, but that's only because the experience of watching Haikyuu only can be felt when you're in it. Glad you took the chance. Excited for OVA and season 2.
It's basically understood that the third years wouldn't participate in the second tournament of their final year because they should be preparing for college and their final exams during that time. So in the proper context it should be a feeling like 'losing to seijoh means that asahi, daichi, and sugawara will be leaving.' You weren't mistaken to believe that. It's a bit of a twist that the third years have decided to stay on with their club activities since that is something which wouldn't usually happen. This is also why that guy was trying to get their club advisor to convince them to think about their future instead of continuing with volleyball.
Jacob’s face when he found out that the seniors aren’t leaving was like a kid in Christmas who found out that “no presents this year” was just a prank.
In Japan, Sometimes the word "New Year" is translated as Spring. *It is a custom that incorporates happy feelings as soon as possible. So, The spring tournament will be held in January. New school term of high school starts from April. January to March is the exam season. Students who continue club activities sacrifice time.
To those who are interested about Japan HS School Year, here's a what I know (a little) They do start in Spring, and it's for a good reason. Here me out, they start in Spring (春 Haru) as it is symbolic, they believe it's a good start for "growth" for the students. But to those who are confused with the Calendar, Spring Tournament is only called so because the finals end in early spring which is like mid-march. The new school year starts in April (it's the middle of Spring Season where Sakura is at its best bloom, which is why you can see in a lot of Gakuen-focused animes where they always take photos during their entrance ceremonies on the school gates where Sakura trees are present, always). I hope this clears somethings!
And Interhigh is completely different from Spring Tournament. Both have their own nationals. As they are completely different, the national level tournaments USUALLY are in Tokyo Stadium. BUT sometimes, the venues change.
daniel orozco spoilers It's January in the manga right now, and Karasuno made it to the third round and are about to finally face Nekoma in an official match.
daniel orozco spoilers It's January in the manga right now, and Karasuno made it to the third round and are about to finally face Nekoma in an official match.
YES! The genuine surprise that their last match against Seijoh, is in fact, NOT the last one for the 3rd years!! WOOO! Loved your guys' reactions, as always
Hi, I actually work at schools in Japan right now! We do start the school year in the Spring (almost always April), and in the series, the team trained and prepped for the tournament that occurred in this anime season, which occurred in May (Daichi's friend from the first round with Tokonami mentions this!). We go into summer break in late July, and this lasts a month, so we come back like the 3rd week of August or so? Then, as mentioned in another comment, HaruKou, happens in January in Tokyo, after winter break in December/January. So this upcoming tournament for season 2 is the preliminaries for HaruKou (which actually happens irl, it's gotten pretty popular, thanks to Haikyuu!) So basically this whole first season happens in the first "semester (actually a trimester)" of the school year. :D
I know right?? But I think the Nekoma OVA is very important too! Whether some one watches it or not can really change their perception of Lev, and I think Caleb and Jacob deserve to be in on the Lev jokes/memes ;D
Step B. SW223000 Yes, they could, but why interrupt the story flow of season 2? Plus, I don’t think we would all agree on between which two episodes they should watch the OVA, so watching it now is definitely the best choice in my opinion :)
IIRC they *did* hint the third years can stay if they want when Dateko lost and Dateko seniors decided to step down deliberately (making the second years i.e. Futakuchi and Aone upset about it). But it wasn't explicitly clarified. Haikyuu never lets us see what can happen beyond a certain point..we don't know how long this series plans to continue and what's to happen at the end. I'm glad for that because it makes the series less predictable. And thanks for deciding to watch the first OVA next week! This OVA has canon content from manga's extra chapter, so its story is written by the author Furudate Haruichi himself. Many don't even know that the OVAs exist, haha. Hopefully they'll watch it if you guys do!
YEEESSSSSSS! YOU'RE FINALLY GOING TO SEE MY FAVOURITE HALF SEASON! Honestly it's amazing you love the show this much, I cannot even fathom what you'll think of it after this season. All the characters you're about to meet... The lines you'll get to hear, the scenes you'll get to see! THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I just want them to have watched the first half of season two already!!!!!! And yes! The OVA! While I like how Leg is introduced in the show, the OVA is a much better introduction and he fits with the team a little better.
The reason the third years have a chose is because of exams that come up. They usually drop out of clubs at this time because they have to focus to get into college, and most schools and parents think anything that takes time away from studying is a hindrance, so 3rd years will leave after the summer tournament. However in this episode, they decided to risk their exams and continue with the club.
yes guys, like you said, the end of the school year doesn't align with the end of volleyball season. to go to nationals there are more than just one tournament as well. interhigh or the spring high are among those. they are being held on a regional level at first (47 in japan, karasuno/seijou/shiratorizawa are in miyagi for example) and the winners of said prefectures will be going to nationals. (so 47 guaranteed, but i think tokyo has 3 representatives as it is the capital.) the thing about graduating a club is a common practice in japan coming from how most take their education and preparing for university entrance exams as their priorities. so it's not like they are forced and it's obligatory to graduate a club, but it is a common practice to do so. so third years usually don't take part in the full volleyball season because of it. (this usually applies to other kinds as well, for example i know it for certain that baseball works the same too, third years take part in spring qualifiers and the summer koshien, but after that, despite the school year not being over, they graduate at that point from the club and don't take part in the fall qualifiers or the following senbatsu/spring koshien.)
Let me post the someone's comment in Haikyuu ep24 review. S/he explained very well. ************************************** arisatsubasa Alright so here's some information you might not know: the school year in Japan is different from the US. I know you're gonna do the OVAs first, but I'm just gonna say a little something: if I were to accurately rate the three seasonsof Haiykuu, I'd say season 1 is good, season 2 is great, and season 3 is also great. You talked about loving characters/shows that have so much passion about something & how that brings them together, but is also something that is so captivating to us as viewers. I think you guys would really enjoy Shokugeki no Souma (aka Food Wars!), which is right up that same alley.
Noah Eitan Elhai I would say the same. Food wars has really good characters but I feel like SOS are uncomfortable with fanservice even if its on both sides
Fair point - fanservice generally either squicks me out or just straight up irritates me. I ended up pushing through it with Food Wars because I got hooked on the characters & their story, but even with a good story and/or characters it just ain't everyone's cup of tea.
Just a few things about the education and volleyball in Japan. The school year starts from Spring. The tournament (but actually was just the local preliminaries) in this season held in the first quarter (spring quarter). This tournament is completely different from the Spring tournament. The local preliminaries of Spring tournament (what you'll see in the next season) start from summer. If you want to go to the Spring tournament held in Tokyo (and that is the "National"), you need to win the 1st place in the preliminary in local. In this show, they play in Miyagi (宮城). And the Spring tournament in Tokyo held in January. Usually 3rd year high school students start preparing for higher education in summer. So if the 3rd years go play the next tournament, they won't have enough time for study. That's why the teacher worried.
how can you not binge these episodes is beyond my understanding :D at least, two, three a week! especially with second season coming... that one is top of the crop. i am so glad you do this, it makes me so happy i can cry about those special moments with you :)
I just found your channel recently and I absolutely love your reactions to this anime. This anime is so emotionally draining (in a good way) and it keeps your attention throughout the entire episode. Can't wait for you guys to react to season 2 and see the roller coaster of emotions that you will experience. Fighting!!
I could relate to the scene with Hinata and Kageyama so much. One of the more recent examples of that for me was when I had to go for a run around campus, and even after that I felt like I needed to punch something (rip pillow) because of the stress of bad group mates in a team project. It wasn't sports related, but they were so terrible in every regard and I was just so frustrated and fed up with myself for letting myself get placed in that group. Keep up with the great reactions and discussions, can't wait for season 2.
Don't get confused guys! The InterHigh and the Spring Tournament are two different things and have each their respective nationals! Both tournaments have prefectural prelims, and it's their nationals that are held in Tokyo. So sad that you won't be reacting to season 2 yet ‧º·(˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )‧º·˚ BUT the OVA is really good! I'll just have to wait patiently! As always, love your reactions
There are 2 major tournament each year. The third year's problem was to stop extra curricular activities and be ready for college or continue extracurricular activities while getting ready for college.
I think some people know the same feeling when they lost against Aoba Any and every team sports player knows the feeling when they lose in a big tournament
High school is very important in Japan, but University not so much. The university is usually a lot less strict. Getting a high school diploma in Japan is like getting a Bachelor's degree in the US, in that without it, you could get a basic job, but with it, you can get a whole lot more. People in Japan don't have to go to high school, but it's usually expected.
That's so untrue. Over 97% go to high school in Japan and most of them graduate, so it doesn’t mean much. Just everybody’s thing. You can’t even compare with bachelor degree.
I didn't mean that no one goes to high school, just that having a high school diploma is more important and there is more weight to the high school on a Japanese resume than where the person went to university. That was how I was comparing a Bachelor's, since in the US, employers couldn't care less where you went to high school, but pay a bit more attention to if you have a college degree or not.
bandotaku:I know you didn't mean no one goes to high school in Japan(╹◡╹)I’m saying there’s no weight at all when every resume is from high school graduate in Japan. If there is an island where everyone can swim, it doesn’t mean much to write “I can swim” on your resume. Same thing. It only matters which university/college, what faculty and dept. you’re from in here.
Finally they stop saying 3rd year leave. Can we got full reaction with timer or something for next reaction in this anime? Cuz second season gonna be much epic and crazy momen than first season you not want miss it
We end school in March and starts again in April. Spring Tournaments is called so cause the actual match is right before graduation. I mean the nationals. But before that they need to choose the finalists of each prefectures. So they still need to fight for nationals. Btw, I'm on my spring break! 😂 💕
No!!!! I have to wait 2 weeks for season 2😩😩 I like the ova but if they wanted to watch it they should have put it as an extra besides season 2 episode 1 😭😭😭😭
So annoyed that people didn't make it clear to you that there was a spring tournament available to the third years. It was mentioned ages ago, when they were first talking about how important the other tournament was.
It was also talked about in epi 18, and we did try to remind them about it. Same thing about school year. quite a few people try to let them know it starts in April which is only two months ago. It is mods who decided not to deliver them.
Starting with haikyuu is ruining the sport genre for u. It’s just a masterpiece. The only other sports anime that comes at least close to it is Ping Pong the animation
kk. AgeXI I would advise you to start with one outs and Hajime no ippo but there are other in different genres such as battery or chihayafuru that are very good as well
kk. AgeXI I havent seen a lot of sports anime (since usually what I watch is mostly due to happenstance and not thru recommendations or because I was intentionally looking for that kind of anime). But Ace of the Diamond is pretty fcking good altho it prolly wont get a 3rd season since its been forever since I watched season 2 (like its prolly been like a year or 2). Overall it follows the same rhythm as Haikyuu except its more realistic since the 3rd years do leave the team, and some players deal with injuries or losing the ability play effectively due to mistakes they made before affecting them subconsciously.
samy lopez Thanks for recommendations I have read one outs (and it’s amazing) but I didn’t know it had an anime Need to finish hajime. So far it’s been good
Can’t wait for you guys’ to react to Season 2 and 3 and so on!!! >W< I’m very picky about people reacting to anime but you guys are really good I love it

The story of Caleb climbs up a tree to yell his frustration because he did terrible in a baseball game was really interesting haha
But how can a person who climbs up to 100 feet so quickly be bad at any sport? lol
tomato you’d be surprised

The OVA meme will continue from Blind Wave over to SOS Bros.
I know right?? But I think the Nekoma OVA is very important too! Whether some one watches it or not can really change their perception of Lev, and I think Caleb and Jacob deserve to be in on the Lev jokes/memes ;D
They could watch it closer to the training camp no??
Step B. SW223000 Yes, they could, but why interrupt the story flow of season 2? Plus, I don’t think we would all agree on between which two episodes they should watch the OVA, so watching it now is definitely the best choice in my opinion :)
I never watched the OVAs oddly enough

They hinted out the spring tournament at the end of the dateko match. When aone screamed "SPRING TOURNAMEENT"

The saddest development of this episode is that since we're moving into a new season, that'll be the last "OOOH YEEEEAAAAH". New OP coming up next.

The nationals are in Tokyo
Spring tournament is the same thing as the previous tournament
I’m watching the show along with the bros, and avoiding spoilers has been a battle! My goodness...
I’m super excited to start season 2 now, though!

Oh, ok, I see what you mean. :)
Can't wait for season 2!!
The episode of Nekoma right now pls! XD
It was so hard not to say anything when you guys were so certain that the third years were leaving! Phew, glad that hurdle is over.
Excited for Oya?
Oya, Oya?
Oya, Oya, Oya?
----> Tsukiiii my booyyyyy
Nekoma OVA next week, huh.. Lev is heeeere~~
Also.. Traaiiiiiiniiiiing caaaaaamp. Heyheyhey
where did they possibly get “spring tournament is in toyko” from??
They are just guessing, I think
how can you guess thousands of high schools take flights to Tokyo on the same day? well most schools aren’t able to afford it financially lol
Finally more haikyuu
AHHH knowing about the Japanese sports season things isn’t a spoiler so WHY DIDN’T THEY JUST READ THE COMMENTS AHHHH
I can't believe it's been six months since you guys started this show.
Finally they stop saying 3rd year leave. Can we got full reaction with timer or something for next reaction in this anime? Cuz second season gonna be much epic and crazy momen than first season you not want miss it
Time for the "I'M A BELIEVER" vibes
Keep going with this series. It gets better.
You're going to love season 2 even more!
All I have to say is get ready for the hype as fuck season 2. As good as this show is now, it’s becomes even greater. Get ready :D.
She is almost here, guys. In two weeks.... it'll begin.
As a side note, I just wanted to let you know that the voice of nishinoya and bakugou (my hero academia) is done by the same actor :D
I can't wait for townspeson b.
school in japon starts in april and ends in march. ITS INSANE TO ME.
Pleaaasseeee start the 2nd season fast ...... Its one Episode after another being great so good this anime
The first ova... is the best thing. I'm looking forward to it.
So usually third years focus on studying for entrance exams for college, but if they maintain their grades they can keep participating
We end school in March and starts again in April. Spring Tournaments is called so cause the actual match is right before graduation. I mean the nationals. But before that they need to choose the finalists of each prefectures. So they still need to fight for nationals.
Btw, I'm on my spring break! 😂 💕
Watch the bonus episode:lev genzan, it's pretty good
subscribed because of this show
11:09 Notice what hand he spiked with ;)
No!!!! I have to wait 2 weeks for season 2😩😩
I like the ova but if they wanted to watch it they should have put it as an extra besides season 2 episode 1
😭😭😭😭
Please watch S2!! I love your reaction.
So annoyed that people didn't make it clear to you that there was a spring tournament available to the third years. It was mentioned ages ago, when they were first talking about how important the other tournament was.
They prefer it this way. It made the Interhigh tournament feel more important. It gave a better reaction. No harm done.
It was also talked about in epi 18, and we did try to remind them about it. Same thing about school year. quite a few people try to let them know it starts in April which is only two months ago. It is mods who decided not to deliver them.
Actually, spring is the season that japanese school children graduate after finished 3 years education.
I can't wait for you all to catch up. I'm reading the manga and you're in for one of the best sports anime in my opinion
Yasssssss! Season 2 is coming soon
you guys should watch kuroko no basket after this
Starting with haikyuu is ruining the sport genre for u. It’s just a masterpiece.
The only other sports anime that comes at least close to it is Ping Pong the animation
kk. AgeXI you clearly haven't seen enough sports anime
samy lopez
I have a fair share.
But none came close to haikyuu, so if u know some good ones, pls recommend
Overall it follows the same rhythm as Haikyuu except its more realistic since the 3rd years do leave the team, and some players deal with injuries or losing the ability play effectively due to mistakes they made before affecting them subconsciously.
samy lopez
Thanks for recommendations
I have read one outs (and it’s amazing) but I didn’t know it had an anime
Need to finish hajime. So far it’s been good
Get ready for season 2!!!!! ❤️
