I loved how you talked about the old boys with pigs. Them ole boys are getting out of it, and some others been getting in. Ive raised pigs for butcher for almost 10 years, for friends, fam, etc.. When feeders at the auction went for $175 from $50, i knew it was time for my own setup. We kept 4 for breeding, had to cull one for a bad leg, and bred our 3 remaining gilts via A.I. in early December. (Gilts are non-bred, up until first time breeding for the non-pig folk...then they become sows.) It seems they all took. Now the waiting game begins. It does seem like our market is more thirsty than yours but i could be wrong. Butcher dates are a key factor, feeder pig selling is better I'm thinking.
Always enjoy your videos my wife gets on to me for watching them too much lol you guys are a big reason that I started raising pigs. Hope y’all are doing well
Chris, Truly love your videos. Some great looking pigs 🐖! I always learn from them. Pigs are our favorite animals to raise and we trying to get our system lined out like yours. Keep putting these videos out! Happy New Year to you and Darlene! Thanks!
Hey Chris what’s your take on tamworths pig I just bought boar and two gilts that I’m raising and going to try and breed them just curious what you thought thanks
My husband would be in hog heaven. He has a red boar right now that raised from a baby that he loves to pieces. He had 7. They were all supposed to be raised for food but he got attached to RedMan. My husband said He acts like a puppy dog!!!
Hey Chris, your hog videos are the most informative I've found! I really enjoy watching them. I have a question on the design of my hog facilities. So I'm planning on building a 24 x16 foot pen with an 8x6 shelter. Is that large enough to feed out 5 or 6 hogs? And on loading ramps, I was going to build it 8 foot long so it's very gradual, would that be overkill? It's going to be made out of 2 3/8 well and about 50 inches tall so it should be plenty stout!
Speaking of Carolina Gold...Got me some Carolina Gold Rice from Tidewater Grain down in Oriental the other day. I bet it would go good with a Carolina Gold picnic roast. The stock is looking good Chris.
I am halfway a pig farmer because of watching your vidoes :) I got my first 3 berkshire 4 month olds. 2 female and one male. Thank you for what you do and I am getting older now in my 50's not sure how much I have left but I am going to enjoy it raising pigs god willing. Just one question what would you mix berkshire with for selling meat? And would you have the male or females berkshire for mixing the breeds?
I have an old video showing the recipe I use the most , let me know what you're feeding and what you have available grain wise and I'll give you a recipe to match
About how much feed daily do you feed your pigs. Gestating sow's, lactating sow's, adult sow's that aren't bred and your boar. I have Duroc and trying to get the feed ratio right. Thank you for your time and advice
Open sows 5lbs, bred sows 7 lbs and nursing sows start at 10 lbs and goes up by litter size about a pound per pig is the base . A grown boar usually gets about 2.5 lbs a day but that varies a little . Overfeeding can cause a lot of problems these Durocs do better if you keep them fit looking
And I'm sorry piglets get free choice on a feeder mostly, breeding stock I'm growing gets up too 10lbs a day until I get them to weight ( 350 ) then I cut them back to 5lbs
Hay Chris ! what do you think about raising feeder pigs to sell. .We dont live in a large farming area but have one sale barn that sell feeder pigs ..Feed is .very high here in east texas . but i like what you do. thanks for all the information you share. God Bless.
If you could get set up to make your own feed or find someone to sell you some in bulk and sell pork instead of pigs you could probably do ok . I make most of my money selling weaned pigs but a couple of pens full of tops is a good boost to the bottom line . I just don't have the market built up enough yet 20 is about all I can sell A year but I get 5.00 a lb processed and that's ten at the time 250/300 lb hogs walking dress out 190/230 ish
@@HomesteadingtheHardWay Hey Chris I am currently building me a hog pen and pig pen out of panels. I want to raise about 5 pigs and maybe get me a boar and sal to start raising a few myself. And I like your pigs better than anybody else I've seen. Never have raised pigs but my papaw did. I'm a hillbilly out in western NC. Was wanting to get durocs or Duroc Cross. What's the story with the barking dog brother. It's kinda irritating to be honest with you. I love your show. I get good information from you and I've been raising hogs for 38 years
Microphone picks up noise in a weird way that dogs two hundred yards away . Same thing happens with passing jets ( twenty miles away ) we can hardly hear them but they're overpowering in the video .
@@Joesdiaperxxx99 you'll have to castrate if you're going to eat them unless you process them young . Cutting teeth is done at birth to stop them from chewing up the sows nipples or she'll stop nursing them and they starve . You may not have to clip them but you need to check every pig because once she's sore you can't fix it .
That solo cup in these videos makes my day.
Hi Chris! You have some really fine looking pigs. I never get tired of watching your pig videos. I hope you and Miss Darlene have a great new year!
Happy new year Mark !
They are pretty
Thanks Keith
Thanks That was a great recap. I can sure see the difference in those full blood duroc like little tanks.
Some nice looking pigs Chris.

Thank you
How much you charge for a duroc uncut boar? I’m in south Mississippi and wouldn’t mind making the drive for one those good looking pigs you got.
If you drive through North Alabama, I would pay you to transport one to me if you go to get one.
Chris - do you have two uncut duroc boars?

They look good 🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷 just wondering what do you feed them?
I make all our feed corn , rye ,wheat mineral/vitamin mix and we feed some produce as a filler

By the way - here on the West Coast, those Dewrocs are called Drrrocs 😄
White pigs always sell slow at best
They sure are Top Notch hogs!

I like Tamworth pigs they grow just a little slower than some of the newer breeds but they're hardy as you can get

Why do you have electric line on top of pig pen
To keep pigs in and dogs out . Even a piglet can make over a hog panel a big hog can bunny hop one

Do you sell any "Carolina Gold" pigs?
We do there's also a couple of other farms growing them
You don't cut their tails?
No it's not necessary unless they're in heavy confinement . We castrate, clip milk teeth and ear notch if necessary but they keep their tails
So if I'm just growing them out to harvest.. do I need to castrate or cut teeth
