  • Before he starred in THE WESTERNER and the long-running hit, FAMILY AFFAIR, tall, rugged Brian Keith played the title role in a little-known series, THE CRUSADER. As luck would have it, in one of the episodes, Keith’s character rescued a little girl. She was called the “Waif” and was played by a bright young performer who was born in Long Beach named Kathleen Garver. When Keith was hired to star in creator/producer Don Fedderson’s newest sitcom, FAMILY AFFAIR, the former waif was called into co-star as “Cissy.” The long-running series (1966-1971) was an instant smash. Kathy called Keith her mentor and friend.
Since the early 1950’s Kathy Garver seems to have never stopped working. Her western credits include: THE ADVENTURES OF JIM BOWIE, SGT PRESTON OF THE YUKON, THE TRAVELS OF JAMIE McPHEETERS, FURY, THE RIFLEMAN, DANIEL BOONE, THE BIG VALLEY, BRANDED and two episodes of the classic series, DEATH VALLEY DAYS.
Kathy is also in demand as a voice actor for animation and is an award-winning narrator, having recorded over 30 audiobooks.

Family Affair was in reruns in N.E. Ohio in the very early 70's. I remember running into the living room when I heard the show's opening come on. Even as a preschooler I had a crush on Kathy and remember fondly the innocence of the show's plots and family-oriented message. Thanks, Rob and team for bringing us another wonderful interview, Family Affair and Kathy are part of the tapestry of our lives.

How nice to hear Kathy Garver's insights from an early age on. I was always so glad Brian Keith saw the value of stretching his acting chops beyond Westerns to another medium and genre, as Robert Fuller did accepting the role of Kelly Brackett for Emergency! No doubt a percentage would have sweetened the opportunity for Brian. IMHO, both added to the quality of their projects whatever they be.

Just watch Brian Keith in the 1966 Western "Nevada Smith" to see how the movie business has changed since 1966, mostly for the worst. Keith plays Jonas Cord, a cynical gun dealer who helps out Max Sand, played by Steve McQueen. John Michael Hayes' great script gives Keith a chance to impress you with his acting talent and screen personality. Hayes pretty much gave up writing scripts after "Nevada Smith," tired of writing screenplays that never got produced. Keith continued his acting career but I can only think of his role as Theodore Roosevelt in 1975's "The Wind And The Lion" as one where he again had a great movie role that matched his talent. "Nevada Smith" was a grim Western filled with fictional bad people, including the title character. Keith's role in 1966's "Family Affair" TV series, real pablum, had one real-life really bad person, producer Don Fedderson, who treated actors like cattle. Especially Anissa Jones. I am still waiting for "Nevada Smith" and its great Lucien Ballard cinematography to be available as a Blu-ray release.

Brian Keith had a great vibe that was very much appropriate for westerns. The "Westerner" of course proves that, but it could be argued that his few scenes as character, Jonus Cord in the McQueen classic "Nevada Smith" were some of the best and most memorable in that great film.

I describe them as "suspense films." Hitchcock was the master. "Night of the Hunter" did very well until the very end of the film where one shotgun blast ended. Also, German expressionism began in the 1920s and was old in the 1950s.
