Joué expressive and modular MIDI controller - full review

- The Joué is a fascinating touchy, tactile, flappy and elegant MIDI controller that can be all sorts of things. I go through the functions, the modules, the editor and hopefully demonstrate the potential of the Joué to do interesting and creative things.
Note: regarding the MIDI mapping of the Bubbles you can use the "axis lock" feature that you will find on the right of the devices view in Joué Editor. Select « X » and only the horizontal axis will send CC messages, « Y » will only send messages when moving vertically and « Z » only when press. Don’t forget to select « All » when the mapping is done.
The screen in the video is the Microsoft Surface Pro 6.

Robin i just wanted to say how much i love the start of your review. I love your style and i always get a giggle but the start of this had me literally rolling around clutching my sides😂😂😂thank you, thank you, thank you
Had the same feeling. I started the video, couple of seconds into, I came down to check if anyone else fell for this beginning Lol...Turns out a few
Your ever-present state of Bewilderment has made this video quite instructive compared to others I’ve seen! Thank you
Never saw such a comprehensive approach to this amazing controller I proudly have the pleasure to use since spring 2020,when the imposed rework of our economic and social structure had the gift of time and family reconnection in its suitcase laying it all beneath my feet. We as a family overcame the fear composed to get man's inner stubborn animal going to accept change by just diving into creativity- with , amongst others , this great fruit of mankind's creative power ....... I can state this device is really unique and there is no other MPE-approach that comes close to its concept... it's one of a kind. My kids and me , we totally got to love it ,especailly performing by switching setups/sounds with just jockeying the pads is really unique and guarantees great fun. From personal contact i can tell you: the staff behind this brilliant tech is smart and they are indeed very lovely, dedicated french people who believe in innovation, individual expression ,the power of MPE and new really unique music tools...totally underestimated controller revolution going on behind the scenes...Thank you very much for transporting this potential in this video.
Excellent
I have the Sensel Morph very close to this
Fab review! The travesty with the Joué though is, that you can't buy that extra little piece of keyboard to stick on the end, or, a longer piece of keyboard, for when you just want keyboard, so you get more keyboard.
Very cool.
Great upload. Very informative. Thanks!!!!! As far as the price - I recently had a Linnstrument. Amazing piece of gear, but at least double the price of the Joué....
what a great review. i was looking for info on the new Joue Play. you don't find much in-depth info on the MPE features (on the Joue Play it's the unlockable "Pro" feature). Therefore: Thank you for this great unbiased review! and yes, the fretboard is just great!!!
Hmm this nipple midi mapping should be marked as mature content :) Great review. Thank You.
Very clever and very interesting, but wow is it expensive. But for the price, I'd be quite interested, and I don't understand why they would sell you just the base unit on its own either! Great review though Robin. Cheers!
omg future tech
I will buy Rolli but this is better...with very good utility. Very magic !
Yes this great Roli blocks are ok
But their bigger keyboard aren’t and their very hard to fixed
It would be cool if they made an MPE with a built in sequencer. I'm looking for a new synth, and the Hydrasynth is probably going to be the one. Due to them having polyphonic AT and ribbon control capabilities, but no sequencer, it would be nice to have an affordable MPE, with a sequencer. I think the Linnstrument is probably the only one, and that thing is extremely expensive. I'm not even sure if it has a sequencer, I just assume that it does, due to the extreme price.
having touchscreen already, while I don't get pressure sensitivity, I can at least slide every note to as far as screen goes. Which makes me think that some transparent film that would add pressure sensor to the screen is a product I would actually consider purchasing instead.
wow that's a cool idea
So I can tell my wife I will be buying vibrators with MIDI out, hmmm it might work!
Thanks for the fun review!
What I seem to miss is LED feedback. Make the floppy things transparent and in the 'magnetic piece put in rgbw led's. Now you can color-coded pads, or color ode buttons etc etc
Check ou the roli lightpads, they sound right up your alley
Hey man, thanks for the review. :) Although it would have been awesome to see and hear you hook it up to your eurorack! It's definetely an interesting piece of equipment. It's amazing how innovative creators can be with the old midi-format.
Thanks for the video! Is it possible to use it to control various modular drum modules with a midi to CV converter in your modular case?
Possibly. It’s complex and capable of generating MPE control data over multiple midi channels which is far more than midi-to-cv usually handles. But I guess if it’s configured with the right interface then anything is possible
@@MoltenMusicTech Thank you for your reply, and your videos!
Does the Joué make sense in combination with the Surface Go?
Yes, provided the virtual instruments are within its limits. I was hitting peaks on the SP6 when using their Bitwig project with lots of effects and instruments loaded.
How is the response of this and latency?
I am totally blind and love fiddling with music but I'm not very good on regular keyboards. So I'm looking out for an instrument like this. Thanks.
I love your videos.
Bob
The response was great - the latency is going to be down to your audio interface, not the MIDI controller
That is dope. Do the vsts have to be compatible with those kind of midi controllers and do you know if Cubase 10 works with those?
To make full use of MPE yes they need to be compatible but you can use regular MIDI control over regular plugins. Cubase 10 is fully compatible, yes.
They work on most my Sensel Morph works on all my software
So if I buy this for a present, would I need to have some sort of monitor when they open it to plug into? Does it interface with the pc? Does the software come with it?
You’d need a computer. It’s a very specific sort of controller that you’d only need if you need it. It would be a risky present - but a nice one.
@@MoltenMusicTech That is why I asked, I assumed I would get this answer :) Thanks!
Where do we order all of the silicon options?
The only ones I see available are the ones that come with the fire and water packs...would love to get the others as well.
Cheers!
Dunno, sorry, I made this video years ago - you're best bet is to speak to Joue.
@@MoltenMusicTech Thanks for responding. I love the channel. Just figured I would inquire.
Cheers!
How can i tune the guitar to drop c?
You do that kind of thing in the editor. There's a tuning option and stuff. I no longer have it so I can't really be more specific.
Fantastic looking product. Shame about the price. Wish it could be programmed via computer then plugged into your favourite synth.
Funnily enough it can. All the mapping and configuration is stored in the modules themselves and Joue are releasing a MIDI cable for it that can plug directly into any synth so you don't need the computer in the way.
@@MoltenMusicTech Thank you Robin. Very good to know!
Have you tried the Sensel Morph
Yes, I have a video on it here somewhere. They are similar but the joue goes much further in physicalising the interface
What is the usb hub you use for your iPad ? Thank you !!
It's not an iPad, it's a Microsoft Surface Pro
Ah ok ! And do you mean the joué cannot be used with an iPad ? Is it compatible with iOS devices ? Thank you !
It can be used with iOS you just need a USB port adapter
Looks like the depth of controllers is shallow and inconsistent... and the modules slide around on the surface. It seems really awkward. The question: is what it gives you (that a standard controller cannot) worth the annoyances?
Hey just wanted to ask what is your laptop model?
Surface Pro i5, 8gb
Yes I have the sameone
Ha, I also found these vibrators first. 😅
I could grab that now for 160$ in Germany, hardly used... Oh, deer ... I miss some fancy lights.
Thinking that's innovative would be fun to play around with sounds and effects. Then price get's mentioned and I'm like How Muuuch! I'll get a AKAI LPD8 for £36 or a AKAI MPD218 for £69 instead and still be massively under the Joué's price.
To be precise, "joué" means "played".
when i saw the ad for it , i thought it was fake lol
Looks great, but boy that looks expensive. I already have a ROLI Seaboard Block I bought in April. I guess it's obsolete already.
Which one is obsolete? ROLI Seaboard or Joue?
@@arulpraveen The ROLI. This new one has switchable interfaces & it's probably MPE, so you get more options. Although the ROLI SB is still cheaper than Joue.
@@shitmandood the Sensel Morph also has switchable pads and you can create your own
@@spellerlittlewing It's still on my GAS List. I'm currently messing around with a Polyend Tracker I just bought recently. I seem to be understanding it better for beats than for chords though...
i like it but its a bit exp
which windows tablet is that?

Looks a lot of fun but the whole project is dead in the water at the current prices.
I don't know, they've just announced a new keyboard module that goes across all the 3 zones - so it must be working for them.
I hope they do well. The problem is, that to me at least it looks like a sub €200 euro type of thing(at the most) but the website has prices ranging from €400-500 for a basic setup. The feels excessive for what it is IMHO.
A friend bought it several months ago. He got one that keeps making trouble and the support is not very helpful - to put it polite. I saw the mails and have to say: even if I like the idea, I won't waste money for product from a company that treats their costumers like shit after they paid more than 400 bucks for their toy.
Wot no instructions or tutorials?
On what exactly? I mapped it to stuff and played it - what more do you want?
Looks like a child toy 😂😂😂
joué is not in french in french we say jouet
Do you think we are all stupid, or is your channel about being silly and goofing off without telling us anything…. I was thinking about picking one of these up now I either need to check another demo or just say screw it cause your too busy talking bout vibrators and enjoying the word play.
You always get something different with my reviews 😁
