  • Come with me on a journey through time and space...well, to 1993 (!) where I'll be building, painting and playing my way through Games Workshop's first Warhammer 40,000 starter set.
    After sprucing up the terrain in the last episode, watch me get mean n' green painting the miniatures - specifically the 20 Goff Orks...

    Oh man... this was my entry into the game. In 1994 my brother and I went half in on that box each from out allowance. He went Orks, and I took the Space Marines. I later went into Eldar though but I've been playing ever since. Still playing the Eldar (now called Aeldari) and a healthy Space Marine (Ultramarines) and Astra Militarum (formerly Imperial Guard) armies. I painted all the models since my brother was 6 years my younger and was unable to do so. He was able to play the game though and is still a gamer and role-player to this day as well. For the record I was 14 at the time we picked up this box... I'm now 43 and still happily a wargamer.

    The oldhammer style gets ridiculed a lot for being too colourful etc. but it really looks good on the tabletop where modern painting styles look great individually but tend to make a group of models look like one big blob.

    I used your method to paint the skin of gretchins and orks from 90's Space Crusade and I have to say it's my favorite mix. I took the liberty to add an extra shading step of carroburg crimson to make a nice contrast between warm shadows and the green as well as very tiny spots of flashgitz on the nose/cheeks/chin to add a nice specular :)
    Cheers!

    I'm surprised at how solid those old second edition monopose Orkz and Grotz are. It is a shame that GW didn't leave their heads separate from the rest of the kit; as, simply turning the head left (dat's da 'and you got yer choppa in) or right (dat's da 'and you got yer slugga in), could change up the pose a surprising amount.
    That paint job is great. I'm amazed at the patience required to do the huge Mob. 😍

    • @edpaintsminis
      @edpaintsminis  Рік тому

      Yeah that would've been cool. I've seen people twist the wrist of the axe handle where their bracelet is for a touch more dynamism. The release of the plastic kit at the beginning of 3rd was proper amazing for all the versatility it gave you. Still holds up!
      It wasn't too arduous. Basically, quick easy low effort for most of the model, but lavish attention on one aspect that will draw attention. In this instance - the skin! The Gretchin, though...

    Fab paint job, they look great, but one thing: you gave the models a top-down blast with white, but then covered right over it white opaque paint, completely nullifying the presence of the white paint. Wouldn't it have been more time efficient to skip this step if there's no benefit to be had from it?

    • @edpaintsminis
      @edpaintsminis  Рік тому

    Sorry to have to call this out but I have to call horseshit. If you want to stay true to MG's style it is black, white and greyscale only. No colour no nothing. If you start adding colour it's blending MG with Mike McVey or John Blanche depending on your painting philosophy. Personally Andy Chambers was more of an influence.
