This specific kind of manga is designed in a way that the characters interact directly with the reader. The reader, in this instance Riko, is supposed to imagine herself being seduced by the girl in the cover against the wall. The manga itself might not be yuri, but Riko being the reader makes it yuri. This also explains why she's so secretive about it. She wouldn't be as embarrased if it was a simple otome manga.
Yuri = love between females....we know from Pile herself, Maki isn't lesbian. This could mean, her relationship to Nico was being "asymmetric" all the time. Maybe they had therefore to end it (which would kinda break my heart tho...) If in season two Maki really does get a cameo...will she again end up in such a (eventually also tragic) relationship with Riko? Would even be kind of a kharmic destiny then... (I'm leaving that "Riko has known Maki all the time and played dumb" fan theo out, this here is already far-fetched enough) XD
