Cyrus Slapatich Well I don't believe that we should have been in Afghanistan nor should we have taken part in the bombing of Libya - what an unbelievable mess the Middle East is with failed states of Iraq and Libya etc. and we helped create this. The mess in the Middle East is just so unbelievably stupid. I mean you have the US arming and training Al Qaeda in Afghanistan to fight against the Soviets. Al Qaeda turns against the US then the US invades Iraq which did not attack the US and did not have any WMD's meanwhile killing between 1/2 Million to 1 Million Iraqis (not too mention those dying from exposure to depleted uranium and white phosphorous). Then Al Qaeda expands in Iraq and ISIS becomes an offshoot of Al Qaeda within Iraq. Now ISIS has also expanded into Libya where we helped remove Ghaddafi - two failed states which have allowed for the expansion of terrorists groups that our allies helped create. Now the US, Britain, and France are, and have, armed "moderate" rebels in Jordan 2012 to fight against Assad in Syria. I guess we, or our allies, did not learn anything from arming and training Al Qaeda. In essence the US, and allies, are both the arsonist and the fireman. These are just unbelievably stupid wars…
Cyrus Slapatich I am still proud of Chretien for not going into Iraq and I have also said that I did not believe that we should have been in Afghanistan to start with. As for our mission in Afghanistan, I believe we were only supposed to be "peacekeepers" but the conflict turned into so much more than that. Frankly, I would take Chretien any day over Harper and the Conservatives. If it was up to Harper, Canada would have been involved in the illegal invasion of Iraq. Harper even went so far as to plagiarize the Australian Prime Minister in order to try to convince parliament to invade Iraq. So, yes I am still proud of Chretien but I do believe that we also should not have gone to Afghanistan.
Cyrus Slapatich CTV News: "Soldier: Canadians ill-equipped in Afghanistan" (February 13, 2008): "A Canadian soldier returning from Afghanistan has made some startling claims about the equipment he and his fellow soldiers are provided for their mission. Cpl. Daniel Beaulieu told TVA, Quebec's French language network, that Canadian soldiers are poorly supplied. He says the equipment they are given -- boots, pistols, vests -- are better suited for peacekeeping. Canadian soldiers are performing a combat role in southern Afghanistan, one of the country's most volatile regions. The criticism brought a swift reaction from military officials in Ottawa after the TVA report became public. "We have to field 2,500 soldiers, so the equipment, by default, is generic a bit. It's not entirely specific to one soldier. Is it perfect? No. Does it satisfy the vast majority of soldiers? Yes," said Col. Jean-Marc Lanthier, the military's director of land requirements. Beaulieu -- who came back from Afghanistan two weeks ago -- also claims the soldiers don't have enough side arms. They're given one, when he said they should carry two. The soldiers' vests, according to Beaulieu, also don't have enough pockets to hold the ammunition that they should have. They have pockets for four ammunition magazines, but Beaulieu claims they should hold about 10 to 15 magazines. When it comes boots, Beaulieu says their footwear is not suited for Afghanistan's rugged terrain. TVA said Beaulieu is not the only soldier to complain, although he was the only one interviewed on the record. Defence Minister Peter MacKay responded to questions about Beaulieu's claims in the House of Commons. "Our government is always looking at ways to improve the soldiers' equipment, but I have to say that we have the best equipment in the world. Of course, if we can make it better, we will try to do so," MacKay said. An expert on the Canadian military says he doesn't understand the criticism. Scott Taylor, publisher of Esprit de Corps magazine, says Canadian soldiers are equipped as well as other NATO allies such as the Americans. "If you just look at what you see on those news clips that are coming back, these guys look like 'robo-cops' from their helmets to their protective gear ... a lot of stuff is state of the art," Taylor told CTV Newsnet Wednesday. Taylor said he doesn't know where the criticism is coming from, noting that "it's completely from left field." Taylor said Beaulieu's comments seem to be unrealistic. "He wants to have 15 magazines of ammunition on his protective vest. That would weigh about 35 additional pounds," Taylor said. Retired Maj.-Gen. Lewis MacKenzie told CTV Newsnet's Mike Duffy Live he doesn't understand some of the criticism either. He said the complaint about having two side arms baffles him because most soldiers do not carry any at all. Also, MacKenzie pointed out that he has worn the boots that Beaulieu complains about and "they seem to be popular with most of the troops." www.ctvnews.ca/soldier-canadians-ill-equipped-in-afghanistan-1.276420
Cyrus Slapatich I remember over and over again on our media whether it be CTV, CBC etc. constantly saying that Canada was on a "peacekeeping" mission in Afghanistan.
Cyrus Slapatich Really, so I criticize us going to war period but somehow I am confused. Sounds like I am consistent and Chretien is head and shoulders above Harper when it comes to war. We shouldn't have been in Afghanistan, I agree with that. As for our soldiers being armed in Afghanistan, in the article that I posted, it suggests that Canada was on a "peacekeeping" mission and that Canadians were more than armed for that. Even heads of our military came forward to talk about these allegations. As for me being "Liberal", I don't align with any political party - I think that is moronic to do. I have voted for many different parties which, at the time, align closer to what I believe. Though, admittedly, I have never voted for the Conservatives. Now if someone cannot see the idiocy of these wars and how, in essence, the US has create its' own enemies (and we have helped as well) then I question that person's ethics and overall intelligence. We shouldn't be fighting in these wars, period, and that is not something that is linked to any political party but rather just looking at the reality of how these "terror" groups have come to be and the role played by the US (and west in general) to their creation and growth.
As an American, I don't know much, if anything really, about this man, but just from listening to this interview, I like him. Can't wait to get back to Canada next month for spring break!
I introduced myself to him at Pearson's airport in Toronto, a couple of weeks ago, on a Sunday. He was SO gracious. Asked me where I was from, etc... Where I was going, if I knew Ron Irwin(former MP), etc... I was delighted! He's not running for office anymore. He could have been aloof, BUT, he was SO NICE! The weird thing is, NO one else bothered him. But I couldn't let this chance pass me by!!!
When 50% of Canada's population wanted to look for weapons of mass destruction along side U.S. President George W. Bush, Jean Chretien kept Canada out of the war. Stephen Harper as leader of the opposition at the time supported the position to invade Iraq. Thanks Jean.
Canada was voted best country in the world to live in, for seven years in a row 1994-2000, and guess who was PM the whole time? I grew up with Jean Chretien as my PM and I miss him oh so much!!!!!!!!!
"Give me a list of every good the Americans import and do not need. There was no list". This is integrity. Mr Harper can't even hold a door for this great man.
Facinating interview. Chretien's humour and intelligence really came through - but also his competitiveness (which helped cause the downfall of the Liberals). I do wish George had asked a few sponsorship related questions - though legally he may not have been able to.
@keithcrack77 So would I, he was a great Prime Minster. Very honest man. He never sold the country to us. I have so much respect for him. And I love his beautiful accent.
I'm not personnaly voting for him, but it's kind of cool to see this quebecer being respected by Canadians, even if he is basicly a french dude, it just prooves that Canadians can be more openmind that most of the quebecers thinks...
He would have made his fourth. I miss this man. He reminds me of when countries are not ran by politicians, but by great men. Jean should be on a dollar bill.
1:06 - Jean Chretien trying to cover the fact that in government-run health systems those who govern get preference. And Mr. Interviewer sucks right up. How convenient that they were not very busy and just happened to have an open slot. Look, I always liked Chretien, but let's not pretend that he didn't accept special treatment.
This is the kind of politician the liberal party needs. Somebody who can actually run a country and do what’s right. No more Trudeau pandering, we need more actual politics in politics.
I know both the platforms of the NDP and the Liberals. I actually agree with the NDP, but I don't see them winning a seat where I love, so I may vote Liberal. As such, I'm stuck with either Iggy or Harper. I've looked at the platforms of both of them, and while I'm not a huge fan of Iggy, I support him a lot more than Harper. Harper just scares me.
One thing about Paul Martin though, just as Kim Campbell inherited the legacy of Brian Mulroney and his tories, Paul Martin inherited the legacy of Chretien and his liberals... Martin could have and should have handled it better, but Martin didn't have an easy time because of Chretien....
@PhilipJFry72 Off the top of my head: balanced budgets, defecit reduction, strong federalist (defeated the sovereignist referendum and passed the Clarity Act), steered us clear of Iraq. He also personally manhandled a protester. :) And I said "in a while"; I never said he was William Lyon MacKenzie King or John A. MacDonald.
I can't bring myself to support Harper. I don't like Iggy, but I'd support him above Harper. Depending on what the landscape in my riding is, I'll vote either NDP or Liberal in the next election.
as we are in all aspects.... we're a very laid back people who still get things done. american politicians are too caught up in trying to take over the world that they dont have the time for anyone, including their own people..
funnpiet give me a break. The sponsorship thing was dissected an analyzed a million different ways over a year. If you want to see Chretien respong just watch his famous golf ball speech :-)
i was pretty young when this guy was prime minister of canada, but now that im older and understand whats going on better...holy shit did he seem to be a hell of a lot more together than harper..chretien definately had the heart of a true canadian and we definately need to get the conservatives the fuck out of power..this is Canada people..not the Unites States. Bush jr. needs to go
Which historian is that? I have a book written by Canadian Historians J. L. Granatstein & Norman Hillmer who put him in the top ten.,,and it was written 4 years before he left office. No other PM had 8 consecutive balanced budgets in the modern era.

I find that funny how Chretien could have an accent in English and in French :P
When he was in office i was a teenager, now as an adult i have a new respect for him. He is well spoken, witty, tough and has a good sense of humor.
As an American, I don't know much, if anything really, about this man, but just from listening to this interview, I like him. Can't wait to get back to Canada next month for spring break!

Chretien is so awesome
One of the best leaders we've had in a while.
This was great. I have always been intrigue by Chretiens persona and his view of politics. George is a great interviewer. A real treat.
i like this man and i love how he ran in 2000 just to stick it to Paul Martin as he said, i never knew that was why he ran a third term
When 50% of Canada's population wanted to look for weapons of mass destruction along side U.S. President George W. Bush, Jean Chretien kept Canada out of the war. Stephen Harper as leader of the opposition at the time supported the position to invade Iraq.
Thanks Jean.
Awesome interview. You can tell he speaks from the heart and not from a script.
Excellent interview, thank you.
bro i just realized canadian politicians are way more chilled bak in interviews in comparision to americans
I missed this segment! Very enjoyable interview. I got the book for my book as a Christmas present.:]
Canada was voted best country in the world to live in, for seven years in a row 1994-2000, and guess who was PM the whole time? I grew up with Jean Chretien as my PM and I miss him oh so much!!!!!!!!!
Loved him since I heard of him back on school :)
"Give me a list of every good the Americans import and do not need. There was no list". This is integrity. Mr Harper can't even hold a door for this great man.
he makes me smile :)

Chretien should make a comeback...ill vote for him if he does
does video of that even exist? I've never seen it, only read and heard about it. I assumed there was no video camera around when it happened.
Very funny guy, met him once. miss him as pm for sure.
Well said.

We need chretien back as leader of the liberals. He was so great. We need some more "protestor" pwnage.
@guitarz04 You didn't just compare Toronto with Northern Alberta. BORN THERE!
This is the kind of politician the liberal party needs. Somebody who can actually run a country and do what’s right. No more Trudeau pandering, we need more actual politics in politics.

a proof is a proof is a proof
Agreed. Way better than Stephen Toupee wearing Harper.
@josephakhoury that he did, he is alot better than anything we have now
The best Prime Minister of Canada.
I love Jean Chretien
Of course he made cuts: Mulroney bankrupted us. During his tenure, however, Canada was still voted the best country to live in. That says a lot.
One thing about Paul Martin though, just as Kim Campbell inherited the legacy of Brian Mulroney and his tories, Paul Martin inherited the legacy of Chretien and his liberals... Martin could have and should have handled it better, but Martin didn't have an easy time because of Chretien....

Why is the video of him choking out an activist not on youtube? That's one everyone should see.
Jean Chrétien fixed are debt crisis and remains today the most funny prime minister to listen to in Canadian history!
I can't bring myself to support Harper. I don't like Iggy, but I'd support him above Harper. Depending on what the landscape in my riding is, I'll vote either NDP or Liberal in the next election.
The man kept our country out of Iraq - best decision he ever made.
