They are to protect the harder metals of the boat, stainless steel and bronze. They are sacrificed by attracting stray electrical currents in the water. They are then consumed and need to be replaced.
From time to time, would see Howard Arneson on the California Delta around where I live. He'd be in his big Skater, powered by some kind of jet engine. We'd see him jamming around at well over 100 MPH. Talk about a rooster tail!
There’s a guy in our harbor that has 45’+ Cigarette with that type of drive. I has huge turbodiesels and had cruising speed of 80 miles an hour. A custom transmission had broken and that manufacture is no longer in operation. The boat has sat in its covered slip for the last six years in serious disrepair. It’s Hydro lift has sunk and it sits in the water without zincs. The owner has lost interest, funds or health. Sad.
Karl Jensen we see neglected boats everywhere we go. It happens when you least expect it. Be careful when looking at a boat that hasn’t been used. Low hours aren’t always a good thing. Especially on an older boat.

@@AskCaptainChris I know and with the Atlantic ocean between us, it would be a bit far to go to buy a boat. It was just a reply to that "If you have to ask how much fuel cost per hour, you can’t afford it". I think the question can be asked even by someone who can afford it.
Love your videos but if you are going to do a technical one please use the right terminology. Ram rods are used to load cannons, hydraulic cylinders and pistons are used to move those propeller shafts and trim tabs.
953173 you are correct. Ram rods are also used for muskets. When I am explaining systems to an unknown audience of varying (and sometimes no experience) I try to explain as simply as possible. Other times I use the words ropes and sheets instead of lines. It just depends upon the situation. How would you like to pay the fuel bill on these monsters...I mean engines? 😎 Thanks for watching.

The propellers on an Arneson Surface Drive run half in and half out of the water. Everyone is so concerned about fuel consumption and the fascination of its cost when in fact the MPG is better with the Arnesons than with any other alternative drive system.
Arneson Industries you are correct. Please understand that my intent to to describe and educate the new boating public so sometimes I use lay terms. If you will. But yes, steering cylinder and trim cylinder are what I was describing when I used the term ram rods. Many who watch this channel have never owned a large boat never-mind an Arneson. Rubber bellows cause the boat to sink when they rot out. BE CAREFUL out there.
