- Developed at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) by MS graduate candidate Arthur Nishimoto, "Fleet Commander" explores how a real-time interactive strategy game that would typically rely on complex keyboard commands and mouse interactions be transferred into a multi-user, multi-touch environment.
Originally designed for use with TacTile, a 52-inch multi-touch LCD tabletop display, "Fleet Commander" game play has been ported to
EVL's 20-foot wide multi-touch LCD wall, Cyber-Commons.
"Fleet Commander" uses Processing, an open source programming language.

that is simply a version of empire at war on a giant touchscreen and fewer ships.
1) Release this as an app
2) ...?
3) Print money for the rest of your life
+cuckoonest168 the only problem is that this is just Star Wars Empire at War plus touchscreen, nothing is his property
why isn't this out for tablet pc!!
It is too big and has too much stuff going on at once
ROCKET LAUNCHER Not with the surface and its i5 intel processor.

@Harabeck Mouse doesn't allow for multitouch nor does it allow for multiple players on the same screen. Also, presentation is part of a game and the giant screen is a big part of that presentation here.
You could certainly make a similar game using a mouse, but it would not be the same game.
So Ender Wiggin and Tony Stark walk into a Stars Wars Convention...
played this game while touring the EVL rooms and for everyone arguing about the practical uses of this. This game really is more of a tech demo than an actual game with an objective
This is looking awesome. A clever and practical implementation of 3D (visually and as a game-play mechanic) would make this truly outstanding. I'm imaging some mixture of 1999's Homeworld and this.
cool, but how does it account for depth in space. all the ships are on the same plane and same angular orientation.
So it's basically the off-world sequences in 'Star Wars: Empire At War' writ large, and operated via touch screen?
I am in awe from this video. That is all the comment that is needed.
@AblocLira They do use it - check out the dashed lines at 0:37 and 0:46 - these are the Death Star lasers.
Looks pretty cool and interesting. The lag is understandable, I don't think too much effort was put into the hardware and what there is probably is just used to support the sheer size of the touch screen and not actual games.
@TheCalorieMate The game was made from scratch by the students and because it isn't a commercial product they could use Star Wars ships and sound effects.
I got to play this today! I'm not even in to games or Star Wars and it was AMAZING!
if you don't have an iPhone, you don't have FaceTime , they should get this for mac
Loving this video
John
@TheCalorieMate For more info, Kotaku did a write up about it. Search up "This is the Best Star Wars Game We’ve Seen In a Long Time" on Kotaku.
@dedpxl
Thats not really their fault, it looks like its a mod for empire at war and as such cant really deal with an issue inherent to the base game.
@Harabeck I get the feeling that you don't understand what multitouch is. You can't replicate multitouch with a mouse unless you somehow have multiple mouse cursors and are able to control each separately.
Be confused by the presentation decisions all you want, I'm merely stating that it is not possible to make this same exact game using a mouse on a normal computer monitor.
since when are the republic fleets outlined in red and the empires in green?
@Kamakazie27 seems a lot like the Starbattle map in Starcraft 2. Only presented in a click multiplayer environment... as in each person one computer
@BringItOn181 technology can be used for things other than videogames?
When I was a kid I used to play this sort of thing on a massive chalk board. I'd draw the ships, star destroyers and battle stations and have them fire lasers at each other and when they got destroyed I'd dust them off.
Will this show up at Comic-con San Diego? If not, when can we actually get a chance to play this type of game? Will this be available in North America? San Diego perhaps?
Oh Lucasarts, can you give this fellow a job please! This is just awesome. I would buy it!
"Fleet Commander" game play has been ported to
EVL's 20-foot wide multi-touch LCD wall, Cyber-Commons.
You mean "Star Wars: Empire at War" gameplay has been ported to a 20-foot wide multi-touch LCD wall.
this is one of the coolest games I have ever seen
hopefully itll be available to consumers in the future
The greatest Star Wars game I have ever seen. Take note Lucasarts...you're doing it wrong!
This is great. If this student doesn't get snatched up by a major studio, he will probably go along way.
Reminds me of Star Wars: Empire at War, except more interactive and cooler. I wonder if they can rotate the screen to make it 3D?
the background music is not real. it's added.
What button intensifies forward batteries?
what keeps someone else from moving your units?
@Lil949 You can get a 22" for $250. I'd see their display as about 4 maybe 8. of those. So maybe it could have been as low as $2000.
i keep trying to touch the video controls but nothing happens
Why isn't this on the Enterprise? The sounds are right.
@sarshelYam While making the game play on such a huge touchscreen is completely awesome, I don't see it indicative as good game design. You could make this exact same game use a mouse.
Hm… the round menus make much less sense when using touch navigation, don't they?
so in multiplayer you dont start running into peoples hands etc?
If a really angry guy's base is close to being destroyed, and the opponent has a strong ship about to close in and finish it off, the angry guy will spit on the other guy's ship, both in hatred and so the other guy won't want to touch it. If that doesn't deterr him, he will slap the hand of the opponent as he's trying to program the spitship to kill the target. The next step will be rolling around on the ground and biting the opponent.
I'm geeking out so much right now.
it is the same exact game as empire at war same sound clips same ships same space stations but for touch screens... I still want it.
What makes it fun is that you can slap your opponent beside you if he tries something dirty.
Give me this. I want this now. Right now.
Oh, and if someone could lend me a twenty foot monitor to play it on, that'd be cool, too.
Why there are sound of LCARS intarface of Star Trek ?
Cool idea. But... what's up with the cameraman? Can't he just not touch the focus ring?
If Homeworld did that, Homeworld series will be awesome!!
I need to have this 52-inch multi-touch LCD tabletop.
So they basically made Empire at War touch screen?
@Kamakazie27 Multitouch is not some awesome feature, it's a way touch screens replicate the same functionality you get from a mouse.
And that from of presentation limits the number of people who will ever get to play this game in that form... Or do you have a giant touch screen laying around your house?
As for translating it to mouse, no you couldn't have single screen multiplayer, but other than that, I think mouse would be a huge improvement. It would be more precise as well as ergonomic.
30 frames per second?
Reminds me of Star Wars: Empire at War. Did you guys use material from that? really fn awesome by the way.
@sarshelYam Considering they used Empire at War as a base.
@CptMcMuffinz What's your point? That sounds awesome, possibly one of the best star wars related ideas of all time.
yey another youtube update...just what we needed...
HOLY CRAP it's ender's game all over again
Google "Gratuitous Space Battles", then put on the John Williams soundtrack. Same thing basically. I guess you could mod the ships too.
Is it possible for other people to play it?
good idea. i'd like to see a roman, medieval, modern war or world war 2 type game like this.
wish I had this, imagine the next generation in gaming is a wall in your room that can either be touchscreen like this or just a huge screen with a regular (or kinnect like) control!!!
It's funny cause that looks even more advanced then the stuff Admiral Ackbar was using.
@kuti95
You mean like from SG:A? :P
Why isn't this out already. Anyway there could have mass effect style
The Force is strong in this one.
I see some SW: Empire at War inspiration here, man I loved the space battles. The land battles, not so much.
RTS in the next decade...is going to kick ass
@Bob1128 oh please, even the drag-on ships to enter the battlefield is like the one in empire at war, he obviously used it as inspiration for his game.
But don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's a bad thing, cause it looks good.
And in GSB you just plan the battles and then watch it, you can't control the ships or anything during the battle. In this video they are controlling the ships and calling reinforcements.
I own this game already, this looks exactly like Empire at war but with a top down view only and touch screen.
Mister Nishimoto, you are the boss.
Brilliant! Even I might be able to play that and not stink!! And I would LOVE to see that tech used for Ender's Game! :D
imagine this as an esport where there is 1 giant monitor spectating tht everyoen can use and 2 teams have a touch screen table that is the game. minds would be blown!
but will it blend?
Will it be out for the PC?
@subh1 Yeah.. that's why split-screen is now hard to find...lol
I can't imagine what the Korean Starcraft players will do with this. Game over forever
Am I the only one who noticed that the lab is abbreviated EVL?
A total war game would also be awesome with this interface
@randomlolkid A sci fi book by Orson Scott Card. The main character, Ender, plays a game similar to this in an advanced military command training school.
Now that's bloody impressive...
all these sounds are from TIE Fighter (probably XW vs TF etc too but I only played TIE FIGHTER) ...
Is this 2D space?
I would love to play this game! Looks amazing!
ARCADES ARE BACK BABY!
Where the heck is this!? I want to try this!
So it's a side scrolling co-op RTS?
Mind Blown.
@GreaterGrandVizier I agree, I'd love to jump on the team and do something different with the music. I wish they'd hire me for something.
were can i play this game
@Mills88 That was my thought too. Seems he borrowed some models, but other than that it is this guy's game.I love it, and want one in my Dorm room now.
@king1Malik This is not made by Lucas.
Yep, but there are sounds that are from LCARS
This is even cooler than my lucky rabbits foot necklace!
@indianajoneszilla they both are equally awesome for this
I played this as a flash-game under the same name on newgrounds. I wasted many hours on this. Sooo simple yet so addictive
Are they going to port this game to the iPad?
Where can we get this game?
now... imagine this in 3d...... would be SWEET, though would require more than just that large touch screen
That Calamari cruiser is moving pretty fast...
how am i not playing this game right now!!!
Interesting idea, but it's still slower than the mouse + keyboard alternative; I can't see this kind of technology being used with competitive RTS games (e.g. Starcraft) in the near future.
Isn't this using the exact same models as Star Wars Empire at War?
