  • The Amberg company in Germany made small hot air motors directly coupled with an air pump with a rod from the power piston. This is one of their earliest production models from the 1890s. Air was pumped into a tank which led to another large carburetor-like tank filled with gasoline. Vaporized gasoline was pumped to gas lighting fixtures within homes or businesses. Sound dangerous? Similar (but weight-driven) systems were fairly common in the US and homes equipped with them actually were considered safer and got lower insurance rates than homes using only kerosene lamps.
