I had this problem with an AVR 1804 receiver. This video was the first I came across when searching for an explanation and a fix. Although the detail and layout of the internals are different to the AVR488 shown here, the cause and solution are the same. I replaced the two 15V regulators which are attached to the heatsink. Receiver works fine. Most of the time was spent dismantling the unit in order to get the main board out. Thanks for posting this fix on UA-cam.

Great video! I have an AVR-588 that had the same problem, but switching the power regulators didn't fix it. So now it's a doorstop. I'll do some more research next time I shop for a receiver... Denon is out for me.

DB: So far, so good, after holding in the two speaker buttons while concurrently holding in the power button. Who knew? You. Thanks for sharing. I've had this piece for some time and got it from a guy who looked like he wanted to take an ax to it - kind of like the out-of-shape guy who rids himself of the row machine because it reminds him he never used it. For that reason while picking up furniture from him for my wife, I offered him $20. Faces' "Long Player" is just that as we move into side two on this Thanksgiving weekend Sunday. Thank you, sir.

I tried the “holding down buttons reset” option. The glitched looking screen didn’t pop up like it did in this guys video.. thought it didn’t work. But it came to life!
    -
I have my receiver in the same room at 2 fish tanks. So I have 3 lamps, 2 aquarium air pumps, 4 aquarium lights, 2 filter systems, and more. So I’m drawing a lot of power.. so this is why I believe it went into stand by mode, to many things was plugged into the power box it’s hooked up too

Good job. I've posted a number of repair videos and repair the stuff for a living. One thing i worry about is people attempting this stuff who really have no business doing so. We both should probably warn people more severely. There's really a potential for a lot of trouble with unknowledgeable people attempting this stuff.

Hey thanks for sharing. I have a 589 and it’s doing the same thing. Just replaced the 7815 transistor and the two capacitors. Didn’t fix it. I noticed the two transistors you pointed at are on the side of the head sink. Mine has those two plus two on the ends of the heat sink. So now I gotta pull the CB out again and tackle those two transistors. Question though. How does that other CB unplug. I tried for ages to get the two sockets to release and I could not get them separated. As you, know it’s impossible to get the transistors off with the other CB in the way. I don’t want to pull too hard in case I break something. Cheers

I like the vid. Could you direct me to the blog that you referenced? I have a Denon 689 which has been shutting off for a couple of years now. I put a fan on top of it blowing down into it and that remedied it for quite a while. Now it is shutting off more frequent. I got a bigger fan, which helped, but with it being summer it's out of control. I took mine apart, removing the boards. Mine's a bit different with 2 large heat syncs and 3 regulators on each. (Yours has one large and one smaller heat sync) One of them is the 15 volt 7915 regulator. Just wondering if that's the one that needs replacing. That's why I wanted the blog you referred to in case there was any additional hints there.
    Thanks

I paid $300 and a capacitor was shot on one channel. And oddly the other channels had loose capacitors too. I heard on one youtube site that these receivers had poor solder joints. Well after 17 years, I guess my solder joints cracked! But I'm a up and running now blowing the house down!

Kenwood AV reciver was giving clicking sound from the poweron relay to supply power to the main transformer. I found that the input to the relay comes from display unit after pressing the standby mode. I checked the input and it was a bit fluctuating which drives a transistor base to give a 12V output to drive the relay coil. The output is fluctuating from 9V to 12.4V. So I replaced the 4.7K ohm resistor with a 3.9K and still it is fluctuating. then I removed the transistor and shorted the collector and emitter which now supplies 12V directly to the relay when power on instead of standby button. The clicking sound went away but the display is flickering. Do you know what should I do.?

I love there power supplys in there . Mine had the same issue its the 7200 WA model from 2014 to 15 it came out with the W and there was a HDMI board upgrade a year later so I bought the A version . Mine kept shutting off with blinking standby If I raised the vol it went off. I checked all my connections did notice I wasn't getting enough output from my surrounds L and R aparantly the terminals were touching the metal stand I moved it away and the output is normal. the AVR has not shut off I lthink it was protecting itself. So good video . A guy like me would take it in I thought a fuse was going .

Bill Flemming Hi; If you are referring to the electrolytic capacitor(s) on the voltage regulator inputs, I would check them to make sure they have greater than 35 volt working voltage rating (marked on side of electrolytic capacitors), and for reverse installation. The tricky one is the electrolytic capacitor connected to the minus (-) 15 volt (7915) regulator. On this one, the positive (+) side goes to ground, and the minus (-) side goes to the regulator input (pin #2). This is how a polarized electrolytic capacitor is connected for negative voltages. Good luck.

hi came across your video after searching for possible solutions. I have this same problem only I also know why.
I am renovating and living in a semi building site. I had the misfortune of having a speaker fall from a shelf above while trying to fix an unrelated network issue. The speaker cable came loose and fell onto the chassis of my Denon AVR 4310 and shorted something out.
Given the cause is likely or possible the solution will be the same or similar or is the damage likely to be more severe?

    • @trustnoone3795
      @trustnoone3795 5 років тому

I don't know. Having been a consumer electronic repair tech. 40 or so years, when you have a foreign object fall into an uncovered, unprotected receiver (or anything for that matter) it can cause almost as much damage as a severe, direct lightning strike, providing it was powered up at the time. Unless you saw where the wire landed & saw anything spark, smoke, etc., it may have caused the same type of chain reaction damage a lightning hit can do. Basically, that means getting ahold of a ''good'' schematic diagram that shows the proper voltages in particular areas or circuits of the receiver so you can take voltage readings (you do have a good volt/ohm meter? I use a digital & analog both when troubleshooting) in areas the wire landed. If yours is completely dead (no blinking light), I'd check all the fuses you can find 1st. You might get lucky, find a blown 1, replace it & you're off & running again. I'd do that before trying to get that schematic. Otherwise, it's ''good'' schematic time. I've got an AVR-1609 that's blinking & I've just let it be for 2 or 3 years until I saw some helpful tips on here. Although I've read a lot of negative comments on here about it being made in China or other things, I really want to fix mine. It was a ''machine''. Not only was the sound quality was excellent, the video circuitry in this thing cleaned & sharpened up the picture on my TV (I still have the old CRT TVs) so much, I couldn't believe it. After having worked on so many ''shut down'' situations over the years, I've learned they're a real pill to work on since nearly any component in any circuit can cause a piece of equipment to go into shut down. I truly wish you all the luck in the world in your repair conquest. Hopefully, a popped fuse will get you going. Again, good luck & take care.

I've got an AVR-1609 that's blinking & I've just let it be for 2 or 3 years until I saw some helpful tips on here. Although I've read a lot of negative comments on here about it being made in China or other things, I really want to fix mine. It was a ''machine''. Not only was the sound quality excellent, the video circuitry in this thing cleaned & sharpened up the picture on my TV (I still have the old CRT TVs) so much, I couldn't believe it.

I have a Denon AVR 1908 that had the same problem. That repair WORKED. Mine had 6 of the black plastic resistors ordered from Denon$30. PROBLEM now is I have no picture on the TV but I have sound. This is connected via HDMI cable. Anybody have any advise on this repair. Great video btw and thanks, at least I can listen to the radio.

Hi. I have a Denon AVR1612 with a similar problem. But the receiver does not turn off. Instead, it restarts several times and will not turn on (start). This only happens if the power conditioner is already connected. If both are off and I turn on the conditioner and then the receiver, the problem does not occur.

I have a very old AV A1D amp. Moved house. Plugged everything back up and pop. Amp blew out with smoke. Quickly shut it down. unplugged opened up and saw how much circuitry there was inside could not see a blown fuse anywhere. My guess is something got bumped in the move.

at 4:17 you mention the "two power regulating transistors attached to the heat sink." It looks like there are two big one's on the left and x2 smaller ones on the right. Which ones are connected to the heat sink?

I have had the Ceoln10 for 7 over since months now. This happened to twice already. Not sure why. I just unplugged the power for a few minutes and plugged it back again. I had to do this two times, the red light blinked again after the first unplug, then it worked.

Hallellujah Hallellujah !! This has worked PERFECTLY with my old Kenwood Audio Video Sterep Receiver KR V7060 whoa whoa I cant believe it yet. In a matter of seconds pushing the two buttons as told by DATABITS and Voilá! the Dead is walking again"! Thanks a lot, man, you are a genius!!
PD: My middle finger (.i.) goes 2 the writer of the user manual who did not tell nobody
    nothing about it .
    "Amplifier
Simptoms: the STAND BY indicator blinks and sound is no output.
Cause: speaker cords are short circuited
Remedy: turn the power off, eliminate the short circuiting , then turn on the power again" YEAH , RIGHT...

I feel dumb cause I paid retail new 599.00 for it and now saw a better model on web for 50 bucks. It was working fine but now I just have sound on thee right speaker and its all plugged up OK. I have 2 Yamaha's for backup rxv model I had an Harmon kardon avr 65 that was aces, an marantz makes some great gar. Model demon DVD player broke to and it was a great sound in DVD 910. Guess I'm done with demon. Hate to throw away but can pay a repai for it. Can get a more powerful modr for 50 bucks . So not worth sinking money into

I have a Denon AVR4800 and it is exhibiting the same symptom - shutting down after a few seconds withe the power red light blinking. I tried the hard reset by unplugging and holding down two buttons according to the manual, got the whole screen blinking, but then had the same shutting down problem. Any one out there has the same experience and have been able to recover from it? Thanks.

great vid. After resetting mine a few times using the speaker a&b+power it would run for about ten seconds and continue to shut off so kept turning it on and off using the standby as you would normally because i was listening for what sounded like a relay killing the power and eventually the problem stopped. Sorry i dont have any clue how many times i did this, also i thought the sound was coming from somehwere near the rectifiers next to the capacitors.

yeah im comfortable with soldering and that but do you have to remove the main board to get to the underside and such, or does it break apart pretty easy?

I cant get to em without taking out the board, but it looks simple enough, we got a repair guy that is real good and has parts on hand, my father is going to take it in to him and have him check that.
It fires up now that I did the reset on it holding down the buttons but im not fooling around hooking everything back up then having to pull it back out of my center you know
