If you put your magnet inside a Ziploc freezer bag BEFORE you start to use it, you can then reverse the bag, pull out the magnet & dump all of your metal shavings into the trash can. Without pulling them off your magnet....Work smarter not harder.
REALLY LOVE how this came out. I'd like to see some more of these done with all different size chips, some fatter ones, long ones and all the short ones as well. Ya can kind of make a pattern beforehand in the canister with the chips. Plz make some more like this.
Fantastic looking knife, as per usual your creative imagination is not above your skill. I'm not sure that you couldn't make a masterpiece out of coal dust! Really enjoyed this one!
The way you so easily create canister damascus just blows my mind. I watch other UA-camrs struggle getting the container off and here you are just tossing it around and it flying out.
@@FireCreekForge is can Damascus preferred method? Just curious I've seen a number of your uploads and thats what they were and yes it's called swerf. And if you had enough you could possibly make anything..

A very nice pattern wielded steel blade! Next time you should wrap a plastic bag around the magnet, then you can just pull the bag off and all the swarfs will be inside it!
Thinking about adding a tiny battery operated motor with an offset weight on the shaft to the vice table to vibrate the powder as I'm adding it, a power adapter to plug in and no more worries👍
I two watching an episode of forged in fire and a kid was making a canister and he used two layers of the blue paper shop towels, and it worked rather well. He cut off one wall and it literally fell out.

I had just commented on Freerk Wieringa's Bowie video about doing a canister using leftover damascus scraps. Then I seen this as a suggested video lol.
Really nice little knife, turned out great, enjoyed watching the whole process. Here in the land of Oz we call drill and lathe shavings “swarf “, not sure what it’s called in other countries. Hope you and your family are well, regards from Down Under.
@@FireCreekForge I know that lol but the cracks you had was from voids in the canister. Especially because you didn't fold the material over after taking it out of the canister.
Amazing job! Quick tip, that wheel hub you were using for grind, you should give it some legs(maybe even some 4x4 wood). This will help with your health, not having to reach down so low. And also your precision of work will be better becuase the work peace is easy to see and handle.

Great job on choice material. Cool pattern in the damascus. Quick question do you think you would have gotten a better pattern using a canoe style cannister?
I may be wrong, but 1080 is simple carbon steel? so it etches dark, right? which means, looking at the end result, you had far more powder than shavings. I think this was a very good physics study in density 😎👍

What happens if you don't add the powdered metal to the canister? On one hand it seems like the whole point of the process is to forge weld all the small bits together, so it would just take a few extra runs under the power hammer. On the other, I can see that as producing mostly cracks with a bit of metal holding it together, that you would then need to snap apart and forge weld into a billet.

"a curl of metal swarf"
