i remember being on the BTCC forums when these highlights went out on Grandstand. everybody was livid with the way the BBC was treating the series. No build-up to the races here, and the sprint race highlights over after 3 minutes 45 seconds! The series switched to ITV the year after and has been there ever since.
Clearly the BBC was out of Motorsport at this point! Steve Rider said(in 2012) that after the BBC lost the Formula 1 coverage to ITV, their commitment to 4 wheeled motorsport simply disappeared!
2001 wasn't that bad a season considering it was the first season post Super Touring...At least the title race went down to the wire, and there was legitimate needle between Plato and Muller
@@josiewallace7968 and it didn't take long for the series to find it's way again. 2002 was a pretty good year with MG and Proton in the mix. The Seat era afterwards was a lot of fun. A shame about the BBC but the BTCC kept moving forward.
I've got the review of the full 2001 BTCC and after seeing it through I have to I was shocked at Plato's driving. From my history of watching BTCC I've never seen someone crash into their teammates on more than one occasion! This meeting in particular was really bad, I can't believe they only gave him a 30 second penalty for punting of Bennett. I'm surprised he didn't get banned or even have his license removed from him it was that bad! On another note, I for one really liked the BTC-T spec cars as it was this time I first started watching the BTCC. I love the Astra Coupe, the MG ZS, the Peugeot 406 and the later Honda Integra model. However one thing that annoys me is I cannot see the point of the format they did with the production class in the sprint races where they start a lap ahead of the tours . It annoys me how they say they're racing the tours which to me is bollocks! They are not racing the touring cars they're having their own race, the B class cars are just mobile chicanes in this race! I'm glad they sorted this for the following season.
yeah I only started watching the btcc in 2009 and I was a Plato fan because of my dad and watching this season it really opened my eyes to what a dirty bastard he was no wonder matt Neil nearly had a sparing match with him one day in the pitlane
Wish there were night races again in the BTCC

really enjoyed Charlie Cox and John Watson's BTCC Commentary

I remember going to these night races, it was incredible especially the flames coming out of the exhausts
Great job, you must have meant to put Rounds 15 and 16 in the title I think.
Can't believe they didn't put a safety car out for Eaves' crash
Remember being at this race
Never liked these BTC-T spec cars and didn't see the point of the class B cars.
Alot of UK Circuits build on old Airfields
This should be round 15 and 16.
Phil Bennett was... well, not the best. But I can appreciate his sentiment here.
