+Dan Hazing ya you actually see kids mostly boys, just walking down the road with their hurlys and hitting their sliotor up the road and picking it up again when they get to it and repeating the process
It doesn't look to hard to get the basics down, I'm sure there is whole new aspects to team play. I kind of wish it was payed here in America I love trying new sports but there really isn't any teams or leagues you know.
As an American, my first experience with Hurling was at a pub, in Killarney, on St. Patrick's, having my first 'technically' legal pint (was 18, which would be illegal over here). It was one of the most spectacular things I had ever seen during an already amazing experience.
RogueBishop89 Most people in Ireland would say 'St. Patrick's Day' although more colloquially it would be 'Paddy's Day' but never ever called 'Patty's Day'
Padraig is the irish gaelic for patrick for instance la le padraig is saint patricks day both are correct .but in different languages. You would not say saint padraigs day or la le patrick because the grammar would be wrong in both languages.Patrick was not irish and lived before the english language existed so neither is really right or long. When he came to ireland there was no p in gaelic so his name was pronounced by the locals with k sound rather than p
I did a bit of research, and there is in fact a little bit of semi-organized hurling being played at US colleges. It's very amateur stuff though, mostly kids with no previous experience just doing it for fun. Men and women play on the same team. Nevertheless, a hurling team from Montana was willing to travel to New York to win a national tournament (about the same distance as Ireland to Greece), so the players must really like the sport.
Just finished watching some Hurling highlight videos. This sport would definitely appeal to some Americans. It looks faster and more active than lacrosse.
There are actually alot of Hurling clubs in the United States! I play for the Hoboken Guards in New Jersey and I founded a club at my University. There are clubs all over New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. I have played every major American sport and there is nothing that compares to the passion and skill both players and the fans have for the game! If you want to check out my experiences playing in the NCGAA (National Collegiate GAA) specifically the 2014 National Championship watch my videos! Slan!
Was this filmed at st James gate in Dublin? The tracks in the street look like the ones outside of st James gate. For anyone that doesn't know, st James gate is the big black gate that goes into the Guinness factory in Dublin
The chap in the glasses is right....people in America would love hurling. Even though they cover themselves in pads (like girls!!!) while playing games they celebrate the physical stuff in sport. Hurling is all about that.
first time I've ever heard of it.. I'm still trying to learn all the rules to cricket... would love to learn.. please do a follow up video... Yes, I'm from the US hour north of Boston MA.. Was in the U.K. two years ago for a month .. and met many AUS there, at the same time.. I saw a huge England vs Scotland football match.. then after England beat Scotland.. the next two weeks was all about cricket... This is the first time I've ever heard of hurling aka hurl..
I love this, I have American cousins and I always find it so hard to explain hurling properly! Now I can shoe them this. P.S~ Its called a hurl, not a hurley. Gaillimh Abú
I am from Ireland and I know how to play this would be a piece of cake for me and Tá mé ocht mbliena daoís only Tá mé ocht mbliena daoís means:I am eight years old .in Irish though
+veronica boomsma actually I'm Irish I'm really into gaa and I call it camogie sometimes because I'm a girl and that's also what we call it but anyway you can wear shin pads
I play camogie/hurling and it gets kind of annoying when people compare it to other sports it's 3000 yrs old but still they were really good for beginners
That's true. It's big here in the Netherlands. Our teams have been world champs and it's played a lot on an amateur level. It is a bit of an upper class sport here though :).
I play comogie its the same as hurling but just for girls and a few different rules I am 10 turned 10 today I started when I was about 4 or 5 I am on the ireland team the oldest member is 28 I am the youngest I love it it is amazing I have had a fractured finger because of it but I still love it
It's unpaid but they're treated like professionals, like major teams spend about three hours a day training and in the gym. The players are purely unpaid but they're treated as if they're paid for the level of work they put into it
Mark McNulty Why would an individual incur all of the risk associated with quasi-professional sports in terms of illness and injury, without any of the monetary reward for said undertaking? Makes zero sense.
+Michael Heffernan Belive it or not but not everyone does everything for reward in the financial sense, some do it for prestige of winning or just fun. It's the same case with any other sport, amateur rugby players face worse injury and they don't complain about it. Not everything is for money
+Michael Heffernan Assuming you're American, amateur American football and basketball players take the same risk, they too are unpaid. People honestly do it for fun or the prestige like I said
Mark McNulty Prestige and fun are fine reasons and all, but what happens when you tear your ACL, PCL & MCL (or some other similarly debilitating injury) in an match and are subsequently unable to work?
"This, lads, is a hurley, used in the Irish game of hurling, a cross between hockey and murder".
Nice reference
+veronicadredd22 :P i'd say more a cross between hockey and lacrosse. fisticuffs is actually an allowed part of hockey.
Its a quote from the Jason statham movie Blitz .
Hurling pre dates hockey and lacrosse by a few thousand years .
TickleMeShlomo Yep, and they say Canadians aren't violent. See them fight on the ice!
+TickleMeShlomo hockey the only time where bare knuckle boxing isn't criminal
Those kids were brilliant. Just no fucks given.
+NemesisKismet just casually walking down the street with their hurleys... nothing to see here lol
+Dan Hazing ya you actually see kids mostly boys, just walking down the road with their hurlys and hitting their sliotor up the road and picking it up again when they get to it and repeating the process
Jodie O Sulivan cool, good to see such an old sport sticking around.
+Dan Hazing It's a great auld excuse to basically carry a weapon around with you the whole time!
+KingBobulousIII lol
XD i love how she saw a kid with the hurl and she started playing with him and im from kilkenny so everyone walks around with a hurl
oh lol auto correct
and judging by your name i wont be seeing ye in the final XD
lol
Mup Laois 🔵⚪️🔵⚪️
+ThePugUnicorn Gaillimh Abú!

I know, they were very good, like im irish and I can't play hurling for the life of me 😂
+Sarahann Nolan Well, they're Americans. Being good is what we do.
* waits for this channel to blow up in rage * :3
It doesn't look to hard to get the basics down, I'm sure there is whole new aspects to team play. I kind of wish it was payed here in America I love trying new sports but there really isn't any teams or leagues you know.
I mean it's similar to some popular American sports, like ice/field hockey or lacrosse
Sarahann Nolan junior b standard
I get that people in the east call it a Hurl but it annoys the shit out of me😁
same 😠
same
I know it's Hurley not hurl
I hate when people in the west sat Hurley

Not bad America , not bad at all
From Ireland?
+Amanda Doyle
Yeah, why do you ask?
Me too
+Amanda Doyle
Ok , how's that working out for you?
Hahhahahahhahah fuck you
"A splitter?" Haha!
Sliothar. That's the rock hard cork and leather ball. Believe me you DO NOT want to get hit with one
It would be a splitter if you got hit hard enough with it hahah
As an American, my first experience with Hurling was at a pub, in Killarney, on St. Patrick's, having my first 'technically' legal pint (was 18, which would be illegal over here). It was one of the most spectacular things I had ever seen during an already amazing experience.
Should I spell it Padraig? Or does it matter when a foreigner says it so long as it isn't abbreviated?
RogueBishop89 Most people in Ireland would say 'St. Patrick's Day' although more colloquially it would be 'Paddy's Day' but never ever called 'Patty's Day'
RogueBishop89 m8 I live in Killarney
Padraig is the irish gaelic for patrick for instance la le padraig is saint patricks day both are correct .but in different languages. You would not say saint padraigs day or la le patrick because the grammar would be wrong in both languages.Patrick was not irish and lived before the english language existed so neither is really right or long. When he came to ireland there was no p in gaelic so his name was pronounced by the locals with k sound rather than p

U can call it both

Seán Leahy yeah
In America, hurl is often used as slang for vomit. This took me a second. Haha
It's actually called a Hurley
@Rusty Shackleford and Galway my dads from Galway and I live there now
I feel like Camogie should of been mentioned! It's hurling a sister sport after all!
They are practically the same but camogie girls wear scorts
Yes being a camogie player I feel like we should get more recognition
Yeah c'mon Girls!!!!
bbonner422 it’s illegal in camogie
Nolwenn Appelbaum pretty much only some of the rules are different
My cousin showed me this video. We laughed hard at them especially the lad in the red shirt 😂😂😂😂😂

It was really good for a first time!I tried it when I went to Dublin last year, and it was soooo hard!
This video made me feel good to be Irish, and the kids at the end made it.
Just finished watching some Hurling highlight videos. This sport would definitely appeal to some Americans. It looks faster and more active than lacrosse.
I'm Irish and I have been doing hurling for about a years now and this reminds about my begginer practice
My biggest regret is not sticking with hurling when I was a young lad. Best sport in the world, and it helps for picking up a few birds as well :D
There are actually alot of Hurling clubs in the United States! I play for the Hoboken Guards in New Jersey and I founded a club at my University. There are clubs all over New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco. It's the quickest sport in the world and possibly the most skilful

LIVE MATCHES FROM IRELAND - INCLUDING HURLING, OF COURSE!
what a little legend
The game of Hurley (or Hurling) is 3,000 years old, it is the fastest field sport in the world -- 'Shinty' is its Scottish equivalent.
I'd love to see them watch it and react to how rough it is
+Niall Campbell they do have an episode on facts look up americans watch hurling for the first time :)
They were did good for people who never played before :D
wow! the aldi branded slitter and hurly
Where's the part where they play?
Was this filmed at st James gate in Dublin? The tracks in the street look like the ones outside of st James gate. For anyone that doesn't know, st James gate is the big black gate that goes into the Guinness factory in Dublin
I’m from co armagh in Northern Ireland and we mostly do gaelic but we still do hurling it is less popular
Peter Flanagan, the best Hurley maker in ireland
That's awesome.
My first exposure... and I am REALLY surprised that this is not a major professional sport in the US yet.
Looks a lot like lacrosse, which was incredibly difficult in high school gym.
aww I thought they were actually gonna play a game...
There are about 15 GAA clubs in Texas.
Looks like some kind of medieval club weapon..... or a frat house paddle. LMAO!!
They were actually pretty good for their first time 😂
The chap in the glasses is right....people in America would love hurling.
Even though they cover themselves in pads (like girls!!!) while playing games they celebrate the physical stuff in sport. Hurling is all about that.
The lad in the beanie was the best one
first time I've ever heard of it..
No the game is called hurling but they use a hurl to play it
I'm 30 minutes north of Boston. Let's hurl!
***** I live 7 miles west from Hampton beach.. you figure out the rules and I'm in
Or we could just play some lacrosse on Hampton lol
i'm from ireland and I play hurly but the person in the red t shirt the pointy bit of the hurl meant to be facing the sky
The dark haired girl is very pretty
This makes me wanna hurl.
Fuck off.., at least I can actually play hurling... You cant... Lazy American
Made me think of lacrosse a little bit!
The short-haired girl with glasses was adorable.
I love this, I have American cousins and I always find it so hard to explain hurling properly! Now I can shoe them this. P.S~ Its called a hurl, not a hurley. Gaillimh Abú
never play a real hurly match unless you're brave 😂 the amount of times I've been hit with a sliotar or whacked with a hurl in anger is mad
Best sport ever
I'm actually sort of impressed, well done U.S.A, well done.
In limerick we just call it a hurley but I knew a lot of counties called it a hurl
This was filmed outside the Guinness Storehouse, St James Gate...Dublin...i reckon
"Ok, this is called a hurl"
Um. HurlEY, thank you very much.
He does? Ah, sure, that's fine then. Just Clare people say Hurley (hurl-ee) so got a bit annoyed.
Seán Leahy I see. Thanks
they are actually really good at that
I am from Ireland and I know how to play this would be a piece of cake for me and Tá mé ocht mbliena daoís only
Tá mé ocht mbliena daoís means:I am eight years old .in Irish though
in 'merica hurling is also slang for puking
The lad at 1:39 did pretty well. Anyone else?
the fella in the red cap is quite good

A hurl is what you hit the slip that with . You put a grip on the hurl for more help
Damn some of them were really good
Oh my God! The girl you show at the beginning is my friend here in California. She was on a trip with our college to Ireland. Holy shit...
Now I know a little more about hurling!! Good to meet you @Vidcon2016 Best.
Hurling is my favourite sport ever
It kinda looks like lacrosse
+Kaitlyn kind of but they (im irish but i don't play hurling regularly) don't wear padding or safety equipment apart from the helmet.
+veronica boomsma actually I'm Irish I'm really into gaa and I call it camogie sometimes because I'm a girl and that's also what we call it but anyway you can wear shin pads
All sports with sticks came from this sport, its 3000 years old
@@elainem80 lacrosse had been played by the natives for hundreds of years before European contact
@@TehStormOG hurling is the oldest sport in the world, its 3000 years old. Fact
that was actually really good for beginners
Were they standing near the Guiness brewery in Dublin?
Omg I'm from Irish and I'm a professional camogie/hurler they aren't that bad well done America
Looks nearly impossible to play i will stick to ice hockey lol
America has names for good sports. They are Baseball, Hockey, Football and Basketball.
it's like insane lacrosse
Well lads, they're ready to play county.
There holding both hands to close to the bottom , keep your good hand close to the top and only slide it down for a big hit
Next make them try Gaelic !
We have American hurling and Gaelic football teams. Some are even apart of the gaa
Being Irish it annoys me how they react
I play camogie/hurling and it gets kind of annoying when people compare it to other sports it's 3000 yrs old but still they were really good for beginners
Oh my gosh the guys are better than I am 😂😂
Can someone please tell me wtf field hockey is?
It's hockey done our artificial watered grass I think??
That's true. It's big here in the Netherlands. Our teams have been world champs and it's played a lot on an amateur level. It is a bit of an upper class sport here though :).
Hockey on a field and with a weird stick that looks like that hurling thingy in this video but with a U cut into it.

It is almost a sign of coolness if u bring ur hurley to gaa matchs
You should make Americans Whatch Gaelic Football For The First Time.
It's a hurley not a hurl. Hurl is only used in kilkenny
+conor kirwan

In different parts of Ireland it’s called two things. A hurl. Or a Hurley. I say. A hurl

I'd like to try it. Is this a professional sport in Ireland?
It's unpaid but they're treated like professionals, like major teams spend about three hours a day training and in the gym. The players are purely unpaid but they're treated as if they're paid for the level of work they put into it
