    So here's a peak into how we make our Sailing Television video series - and what it costs to produce…

    The two of you have inspired me as i have watched your shows for over 20 Years on Canadian TV. it got me through a lot of cold nights in Alberta as i worked to purchase my own cruising boat and retire. Well it happened just 2 years ago. we got our 40' Catamaran and are now in the Ionian islands. and what do you find on board..... Your videos. yes i cant wait to purchase each new season.
    all the New UA-cam stars are great but you two are the originals and you did it very well. always positive and always fun and classy. we know the life is more then that but you inspired. Just imagine how many cruisers owe you thanks for showing them this life style.
    i seem to recall Brain from Delos even mentioning you two in one of their seminars. I hope the new boat is great and I cant wait for the new season and i really do hope to see you on the water. there is always Beer and Wine aboard for you.

      Thats great you're out cruising and enjoying Greece! We love that region... Definitely will share a Retsina or beer if we can meet up! Did you sail through the Med to Ionion? Turkey? Fair winds!

      We purchased our new to us Catamaran in Italy. So far we love the Med. We have circumnavigated Sicily and done Malta and Tunisia and last summer went to the Ionian. its been fabulous. better then anything we could have imagined. After some more work on the boat at Cleopatra Marina we will head north when it warms up. we will do Montenegro and the Dalmatian coast in detail and then visit Venice by sea. then back to Greece for Dec. next year we will be off to Turkey. we cant wait. We were accomplished sailors and ocean racers as well as travellers before so we knew we wanted to buy the boat in Europe as its the start of the conveyor belt of great sailing. And i have to tell you im looking forward too having too Dingy over to the Volvo parts dealer in Venace....haha. a favourite episode.
      Happy travels.

    My husband and I have been planning for our live-aboard cruising life for nearly 14 years, and within the next month it will become a reality. Watching Distant Shores was an important part of learning, considering, and growing in our excitement about what could be. Thank you, Sheryl and Paul, for your commitment to art and adventure.

    I have watched for a little more than 1 1/2 years with my wife, without a doubt, one thing we both enjoy beyond any description. I wish I could afford all the DVD’s, too expensive for us. I anxiously wait for all new episodes. We have at least 23 saved on our dirty, we have seen so so many times. Keep up the good work.

    My dad and I marvel at the accuracy you bring as well as a gift of storytelling you bring to each 24-minute show you produce. We are mesmerised by the stellar cinematography. Your show brings so many wonderful memories for my dad, particularly the Caribbean. He is now almost blind, but with his 85-inch tv, he can still manage to recognise and tell his own stories of the places he's been on his own yacht. I pop in a DVD and we get whisked away into another place, and for that time, he does not remember that blindness and dementia are now part of his reality. Don't feel sorry for him, he's had an outstanding life and now he gets to relive some of it, thanks to you.

  • @edrymes3653

    I think what sets you and Sheryl apart from the other sailing videographers is that you have always produced a product that was of television production quality. That takes time and effort but then the finished product is worth it. It probably helps that you two have been at it for a long time, before You-Tube, and cheap digital cameras. I don't mind watching several of the sailing vlogs that are about these days but compared to Distant Shores it is like watching somebody's home movies of a generation ago.
    Wife and I caught a couple of your seminars at the Toronto Boat Show and would encourage others to catch you two on dry land for some good info and stuff.

    Nice to hear about the difficulties behind keeping up with a show! We've been trying to document our sailing adventure ourselves, but the high costs of proper camera gear and the hours required to edit the footage has us thinking twice about it sometimes!

      @DistantShoresTV  7 років тому

      Yupp and add in sound gear and stuff ruined by seawater etc... but the editing is the big thing for us... even after doing this for more than 20 years. Mind you the editing gear is WAY cheaper now than it used to be :-) We'll keep an eye out for your stuff...

    I planned to leave on an extended sailing cruise on my Islander 30 later this year. I have been researching some of the videos that are on UA-cam, it had been years since I last watched one of your programs, I'm glad that I ran across your videos at an important juncture in my life. You and your wife have provided countless hours of good information, one of which I really enjoyed was your anchoring, the other was tying up into the mangrove prior to a tropical storm. Thank you for your kind and soft spoken words and easy spirit. I look forward to seeing you as I begin my travels in my sailboat. Aloha,

    Hey, I Love this! First time finding you guys. I hope this info helps tho, I know you probably don't have time for an audio crew, or space for an excellent post studio, but I am hearing a very high pitch ring on many of your voice over or talking parts here. Kinda sounds like you might even be stuck in your boat near a machine making the noise. As much as I'd love to advertise I can fix this for you, it's really just a couple simple steps that will take seconds to eliminate or minimize. Any noise learning plugin can do this. It can go right inside final cut there as an AU, and all you have to do is click learn on it when the noise is present, and then unmix that in. Final cuts got some decent hum removal stuff, but these high end noises are a little trickier. EQ might help a bit, but will also compromise your voice. A noise gate can also help a lot. Anyway, just something to consider that might help you sound perfect. There's lots of these plug ins available big and small. Good luck with your future adventures :)

    I wrote this on my Facebook Timeline, introducing this video:
    I've had the wonderful privilege of being able to see the majority of the 130 episodes in high def on TV. It's a great way to see the world and experience the sailing life; though, I've travelled much of the world in real life too.
    They show part of the Syria episode here. They had a blast there, finding the people to be very friendly, and the country was very modern, and not a religious state - which many Americans don't know.
    Seeing what the Mossad and CIA have done to Syria since then, by supporting the terrorists to topple Assad, has been very sad for me, knowing they didn't do anything to US, nor did Assad gas his own people, which was a Mossad/CIA manufactured lie.
    And this created much of the refugee crisis too.
    This is a great series that is especially nice to watch during our dull, colorless, long winters in Alaska.

    Very insightful. I'm sure the general consensus is that all you do is cruise around sipping wine on exotic Islands! I'm an aspiring sailor. Learning a great deal from various channels. I particularly enjoy your channel. It seems as though things are always breaking/ breaking down! I realize that it is a harsh environment but one would expect better manufactured vessels! You both are definitely an inspiration.
    I love the welcoming tone of your episodes - but danger to your viewers - this really makes you want to buy a sailboat, quit your job and sail away.
    (I did the first, but still don't quite have enough nerve to do the second - so waiting on retirement.)
    I have a couple of questions.
    1) when will season 11 be out on vimeo?
    2) how do you go about planning and scheduling out an episode, destination, or season. For example, do you just film 'randomly' (e.g. hey this looks interesting - lets go over there and get a shot), then collect up the best of the best and splice into an episode, or do you have an outline first, (e.g. read the cruising guides, try to come up with a 'story') then go try to film something to fill that spot.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 років тому

      Thanks M&M 😊❤️ We're editing the first 6 episodes of Season 11 all at once now... we'll put them up on Vimeo in April (sailing in BVI next 4 weeks). We do plan general ideas for filming but then make sure to have the cameras on hand for the interesting opportunities. Strangely the interesting opportunities often end up being the best!

    Thanks for the great videos, it's from videos of others that gave me the courage to start sailing myself, like the Pardeys did it with books and magazines, you have done the same with video, great to see you carve your own niche. You did ask for feedback, positives I like the video detail of how things work like seeing anchors in action, hard shots to get but really show the physics of things at work. Also the cinematic shots will keep me coming back for ideas of new places to travel. Episodes with the right balance of sailing instructions, remote cultures and beautiful landscapes are my favourites. If you had to work on something I would echo similar concerns of below comments from the voiceover work, it sounds rehearsed or that you're reading from a sheet. Video 8/10, editing 7/10, voice over 4/10. I know there's radio and voice coaches out there that can help refine that skill, I'm sure with the right coach you could both improve your flow, or if you could get Morgan freeman or Donald Sutherland that would also work :p Not trying to put the work you do down but you asked for feedback and both positive and negative that is my feelings, I hope it helps.

      Thanks for the comments Jakem4548 ❤️. I'm glad you enjoy our movies, and understand the comments on our scripts. We have always done a scripted style. It was developed from being on regular broadcast television starting in the 90's. We can get it all in much quicker and pass over more information, but I take your point we might deliver it more naturally... We are doing a bit more VLOG-style now so i'd be interested in your feedback on the video I'm putting up tomorrow. Its a vlog on our trip to England last week... Cheers, Paul

    I've recently discovered your video series and I am enjoying it toughly. I have all but abandon other programming to spend time living vicariously through you via your wonderful series. I'm looking ahead to retirement and have decided I will be transitioning to a live aboard. Its my desire to travel the NW and and down the west coast. I'm just starting to educate myself and your series has been a great tool. I'm currently having a tough time trying to decide what boat would be best best suited to me. I really like trawlers, but am concerned about the the limitations of a fuel only vessel. There are so many options... I have done very little sailing... but don't think I like the healing of boat under way (same with a motor sailor). I'm thinking a sailing cat may be the best option, but am concerned with mooring costs. Any thoughts you can share will be greatly appreciated . Thanks for the wonderful work you do with this series.

    You guys should collaborate with other sailing youtube channels like sailing La Vagabond or other similar channels. It might give your youtube channel more exposure. Anyways keep up the great work and videos👌.

      Thanks Eric! Glad you enjoy 'em. I was just admiring your latest with the excellent shots over your boat in the Bahamas en route to Florida! Very nice! Do you use a polarizing filter for the drone?

    • @WeBeYachting
      @WeBeYachting 7 років тому

      Thanks for watching our videos, its very much appreciated. In regards to using filters, we do not use any filters anymore. As we have had really good and really bad results using different filters. So far it seems like the safer bet of us is to not use them and use post edit to correct any offset. Cheers mates,

    Great video! It's really good to see what goes on behind the show. I'd guessed that the costs and time involved were significant, but not quite to that degree.
    I heard about your show when I was researching the Southerly 49 (my ideal boat - which I can't afford) and have been an avid viewer ever since. Sadly, it's hard to get here in the UK.

    I watch your shows and dream of retiring one day to cruising lifestyle. All provided health and support from wife follow. Do you have any of your video segments dedicated on how to crew for others? I thought I may give that a shot before diving in. Maybe start with local sailing club? Great videos keep them coming.

    You sail Distant Shores to all these places you have been? How does a shallow draft boat with centerboard handle in rough weather. I’ve always been told they are not suited for off shore very well. Is the rest of the boat outfitted for off shore? Rather repetitive question, it must be. Your videos are very entertaining. Please keep doing these, I like where you go. Good winds and safe sailing to you.

      Glad you enjoy 'em Jim! We chose Southerly since we felt they were the best fibreglass yacht with a lifting keel, and we really like the freedom to explore shallow places! Check out our links on the boats

    I met you guys at the Toronto boat show a few years ago and told you that I was building a Roberts 39 steel hull and now knowing what I do I would have gladly gone to the bank and borrowed the money to buy a boat and I would have been out there sailing for the last 16 years instead I'm still land locked and probably will be for at least 5 more years and for good reasons, I sometimes wonder what got me interested in building a boat and then I remember, not worth talking about.
    I could go into all the sour grapes but I will spare everyone from that I made mistakes and they go back to day one. I will finish my boat but whether or not I'll be able to sail her is another story which time will only tell. I have a website ( emiliej.com ) the boat is much further along then the website shows and the reason for that is the AWESOME person who freely gave his time to create and host the site past away in December of 2016 sadly at the very young age of 53 he was a very good friend NICK D'ANGELO of TealHOST and now his nephew Joseph Conti of ( media-hosts.com ) has told me he would continue to host the site for free, absolutely awesome!
    Your living the dream and perhaps with a bit of lady luck I will to some day but one thing for sure I will not give up my dream : )

      @DistantShoresTV  7 років тому

      We well know how hard it is building a boat !! - And we built from a bare hull rather than doing the hull too! Hopefully we will meet you out there some day and share a bottle of wine to celebrate!

    200 cuts for 24 minutes. I've been averaging 140 cuts for 8 minutes for the UA-cam vlog. Do you think that is too much?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 років тому

      I don't think there are hard rules at all - it suits the material and style you edit with. We sometimes have more than 400... never less than 200 (not counting audio cuts or extra tracks).
