It's so interesting to go back to these episodes from when they were still just Tech TV. Obviously there was always a teleprompter for them to read off, but the banter in this era seems a lot more free-flowing, compelling, and way less canned compared to post-G4 merger and when they left this set.

And if they flubbed a word, they usually left it in.

I noticed this at the time as well. The reviews were somewhat substantive with a bit of snark and the on camera banter felt genuine and laid back.
Then the merger came, the on-camera takes got more "professional" and the reviews got progressively more unfunny with nothing in the way of actual criticism.

This is what made X-Play awesome. Just reviewing games with a little bit of humor. This is still the blueprint for all UA-cam review channels.

      Thanks.
What did I like about X-Play? Clever and humorous writing, reviewers that I could relate to and trust the opinions of rather than people just trying to sell me on a product. For the most part, everyone on the show seemed to genuinely enjoy what they were doing and having fun (for the most part) and, at least early on, they used to be very inviting and interactive with their viewers. When I may not have always agreed with a review (like 2D games being bad for the sake of being bad because they were 2D), behind the scenes they could take criticism at face value. Being the best place to get up-to-date information on video games of the era didn't hurt either.
As for my favorite games... I'm a child of the 80s/90s... still my favorite era, so a lot of my favorite games are from the 8-bit days on up to maybe the PS2/GCN/Xbox generation. I don't really play a lot of current gen stuff, unless it is at family gatherings or party games with friends. Life kind of went in another direction and I just don't have the time. But the older gen stuff is much easier to jump in and out of. I have an Xbox One and PS4, but they're mainly Blu-Ray devices.
If you want to check out some of my favorite games circa 2005, look no further than G4 itself... ua-cam.com/video/V8vA95pnBcw/v-deo.html

@@newspooiechannel In light of the recent news with G4 coming back, I've been wondering if X-Play can even be as good as it was. Because, of course, a lot has changed since it premiered in 2003. Many of the jokes that Adam & Morgan were able to do, I don't even know if they can be done today, in light of this current society. What do you think, Spooie?

@@newspooiechannel Interesting, I agree with you about the show being funny. That’s a big appeal it has! Thanks for sharing your games.
On X-Play, I like how games and tech are introduced in an amusing and fun way. Their effort in the scripts are much more entertaining than getting news from IGN and Gamespot.
The show helped me as a gamer feel well-rounded on games, knowing about a large variety of gameplay and genre styles. Adam and Morgan have always seemed so smart to me (they are fascinating people), and I find their wittiness and silliness to be really unique on TV.
Definitely the style of X-Play, it’s voice, is a unique thing from Television. I will always be grateful for the impact of this show on my life. To this day, it still makes me feel connected to more experiences, it’s full of surprises!
I like Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, and the Battlefield series; Ico on PS2 is something very special. Sonic on the Sega Genesis was the first game I ever played.

I think the ability and aptitude to make jokes remains the same as ever before. You either have it or you don't. And the recent G4 special shows that they can still crank them out. Not just Adam and Morgan, but the other on screen talent and writers. Will people accept it? I dunno. I'm not sure everyone accepted it the first time around and those that did I don't think changed too much for the most part, but much like any humor or any one thing in general, people need to have an understanding of the perspective and context behind it.
There is still successful stuff out there that doesn't play it safe. I enjoy watching stuff from Red Letter Media, for example. Funny stuff. They are willing to go all out for a joke and everyone seems like nice people from everything that I can tell. I think the key is to just not be mean spirited in one's "humor," don't talk down to people, don't be condescending, don't try and lecture. Be relatable. You'll never please everyone, but you shouldn't try to please everyone anyway.
As for society changing, it's always changing. And sometimes it eventually changes back. Same thing happened with games over the years. 20, 30 years ago, video games were looked down upon by many. A lot of stuff from my youth was looked down upon. But the people who played them 20, 30 years ago now run the world for better or worse, and as the world changed, they have now become more socially acceptable.

@@aszusmc You know, I didn't mind getting into from IGN or Gamespot, 15 or 20 years back. Stuff from Greg Kasavin or Matt Casamassina, for example. They had their own style and you picked that up in their writing and videos. And you could tell they were legit gamers who were passionate about them. Today, I don't know who any of the people there are. So it is hard to trust the perspective of people I am not familiar with. Not necessarily their fault as I don't seek out their websites much anymore. But now I go to places more readily available like UA-cam. If I want to know about a game, I can see footage and XX number of years playing games, I know what to look for at this point for whether I will likely enjoy a game or not. So there is that advantage.
Adam and Morgan had the advantage of building trust amongst their viewers thanks to inviting them in 3-5 times a week. You also got glimpses of a lot of the X-Play staff throughout the series run as well. After a while it becomes "I can trust these people. I get where they are coming from" and they build credibility. But then, I didn't always watch for the games. I watched for the humor and personalities. It is funny, though, how Adam and Morgan got knocked by a lot of people early on and even up until maybe a year or so before the show went off the air. And now, in retrospect, I think a lot of the people who deterred them so long ago and looking forward to their return. People, as you may remember, used to complain about them all the time. I haven't heard a single complaint about their return (and potential further return) yet.
Oh... some of my favorite games over the years, not already mentioned in that video, include Contra, Contra 3: The Alien Wars, Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap, Ranger-X, Bonk's Revenge, Twisted Metal 2, Silent Bomber, Halo: CE, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Warhawk (PS1 and PS3), pretty much any early era Castlevania, etc...
