There was a quick mention of the attached nightclub. At 72 years old, I remember that room was one helluva spot every weekend in the late 60s and early 70s. The Bellboys, the Hi-Guys with Carl Savarino and other bands played to jam packed dancing crowds. Wedgewood and the Rip Van Winkle Room (The Rip Room) on the south side were the two top nightspots.
My wife of 50 years, and a fellow west side, just corrected me. The Rip Room was in fact the name of the club at Wedgewood. Neither of us can recall the name of the place on the south side. I think it was in Midlothian and it, too, may have been a bowling alley. We’ve been gone from Youngstown for 45 years, so the memories are strong, but the detail lacking.
In a rare occurrence in these past 50 years, my wife said I was right. She made a couple of phone calls and can now confirm Wedgewood Lane’s club was The Gazebo Room. The Rip Room was inside the Holiday Bowl.
