  • DIY Inexpensive Digital Wireless RV Backup camera- Review EC170 and 903W TrA
I was looking for a good way to see behind our RV when towing and this is what I came up with. Let Me know what you think!
The app is WIFIAV. (All caps) you should be able to find it in the app or play stores. I mentioned that I had not tested it on android but another youtuber has confirmed that it worked quite well at least on his android phone.
Here are the parts I ordered.
    Transmitter - amzn.to/2dbpuY8
    Camera (The one I Used) - amzn.to/2cwRuTx
** The night vision is not great on this camera some other users have recommended these for better night vision
amzn.to/2emiC8x (However it is not mirrored) and amzn.to/2fkrzkV (but has the stupid scale lines) Having the infared LED's is nice too when there is no light at all and your trying not to hit something.
    RCA Extension- amzn.to/2cwSo2h
or RCA Extension with power if needed amzn.to/2ewkNtG
    Suction Cup Mount - amzn.to/2d12ZsA

    Edit 11/4/2016
I want to make it clear that I am not trying to sell this product, or think it is the best thing out there. I have had some people ask me about using this for "mission critical" type installations. I wouldn't do it. This is a cheap Chineese transmitter that I would not expect to last forever. I have had good luck with it and you may too but the main benefit here is that its CHEAP! . Best of luck if you decide to use it, I put this together because I had a hard time finding something like this and have been pretty happy so far! ~Tom

Just wanted to thank you again, it worked great!!! I bought the parts off Amazon, hooked them up, which was super easy. And was able to watch my horses all the way on a 3 hour drive to go camping. It was awesome, and made me feel so much better being able to watch what they were up to the whole way! All for under $60. Thank you!!!

Thanks for the video!! I ordered the parts, they came in 3 days. I installed the power source permanently in a light near the back window, wired the transmitter to the power for the antenna booster, and mounted the camera to an old GPS suction mount. Loaded the app and...IT WORKED AS PROMISED!!! It just doesn't get any better.

Great idea. Seems to me that what you want to move is the transmitter antenna, not necessarily the transmitter itself. You could keep the transmitter closer to the camera (powering both) and use a shielded antenna cable to the front of the RV. I was thinking of using the [covered] vents on the front/rear of my TT and entry/exit point for the antenna (front) and the camera (rear) so I didn't have to pierce the roof or side of the TT. Running a small hole through the aluminum shroud around the vent (where the vent meets the roof) using a rubber grommet or silicone to glue it in should work. With the vent covers on there is very little chance that there would be any water incursion. I am thinking I'll mount the antenna on the top of the vent cover and for the camera (since I don't have a window in the back of my TT) mounted using silicone to the roof where it meets the back of the TT giving it a high/wider view. Of course the camera would have to be designed to be used on the exterior - not sure the one you spec'd is. Also, there is 12v available in the vents (not switched - so I may put a switch near the fan switch to turn the camera on/off)

Another solution to your wiring issue is a WiFi repeater at the front of your RV. You can go back to your first setup and put the repeater in front. It will clean all the wires up and give you a good video feed. As a bonus, if you’re staying at a location without a good WiFi signal it will help with that also. I’ll include a link to one example. I’m not affiliated with this unit, I’m only including it as an example. amzn.to/2rCbEZ1

Thanks so much for the great tip. I ordered the camera and wifi unit and was up and running in just minutes on my bench. Took a bit more time to install permanently. Our fifth wheel came with a Furrion mount that I pulled the cover off and drilled a hole through inside above the rear cabinets. Mounted to sending unit about halfway in a convenient location. Bought a magnetic mount that fits in the CD slot and am exceedingly happy. Thanks again for your great video.

Hello Tom. Hoping you can help. What great video you did for you back up camera with 5th wheel towing a boat. You seem very knowledgeable. I know it’s been 6 years. Can you provide me with the LINKS to purchase the camera and transmitter? (Lol found them in the description) I’m new lol. The transmitter seems to have bad reviews. Have you since posting that video found a better transmitter ? Or if you have found a better solution for the complete system?

Forgive my lack of understanding of the English language. I've only been living in America for 81 years. I'm so stupid that I thought "Wireless" in English meant WIRELESS. I keep searching videos that say WIRELESS CAMERA and keep seeing wires to be run here and there and everywhere. Does ANYBODY make a WIRELESS CAMERA that runs on batteries and does not need wires until to it, or does WIRELESS mean " run some wires and plug it in" in English????????????????

HELP! So we purchased a slightly better camera but purchased all the componets suggested. We wired it into our permanent power of the bus so we can access even when engine is off. The problem is that when we go to hook it up and test the screen remains blue, and if you click on the icons it says SD not found. The link took us to a slightly different transmitter than yours with a different app. Its the same only now it has HD at the end. Really not sure why its not working when all these other comments the users had zero issues:/ maybe we got a crappy transmitter or camera. Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated!!!

there is an app on the Play Store that allows you to connect two phones (your old one to your new one) together called "IP Webcam" and if the distance is to far,
you can use a usb powered wifi extender (xiaomi wifi repeater 2)and do all of this crisp clear and cordless and reuse your old tech for security or observation or anything.

I used a wifi setup on our caravan displaying on a Samsung tablet. The problem with digital over analogue is when the analogue signal drops out you know there is an issue as you get a scratchy screen and know to stop the manoeuvre. When digital drops out you get a frozen screen and you can be fooled into thinking you are on track for a few seconds.... until impact!
Yes, this works well when it is working, but in reality, low power wifi is unreliable and WHEN it lets you down it will be costly!

Suggestion, would be to mount the camera lower, so you can see if a tire blows out. All your technology placed to high, could leave your boat trailer riding on 1 or 2 rims without knowing it.

Love the video. I am about to install a backup camera to the rear of my camper trailer for the purpose of being able to see when it is safe to get back into the slow lane after passing someone. I can only see the front corner of the trailer from my passenger side view mirror because the trailer is 8' wide. I then got to thinking about installing another camera on the passenger side to cover my blind spot. It wouldn't do much good to see that I'm clear to the rear, only to shove someone beside me off of the road. SO, I'll have to cogitate on how to do split screen monitoring to a single monitor.
If you have any low cost solutions that would fulfill this infrastructure then I would love to hear from you.

Thank you for making this video! I watched it last night since I'm looking for a similar solution, although not an RV. I ordered the camera and the wifi transmitter the minute I finished watching it. 24 hours later, tested and it couldn't have been easier. First, it works on an Android phone. It works on my GS6, just have to download the proper app the seller indicated in his/her product description. If you're using an Android device, download this as described by the seller: drive.google.com/open?id=0B23l6nxQIYlCZVVDR3dCR3BwQ0E
Second, the quality of the video is not 1080p but didn't expect it to be and it works for my application. The low quality could be because I tested it on my work bench under artificial lighting. I'll test it again tomorrow with natural lighting. Nonetheless, even in my garage it's more than I expected. I walked about 40 feet away from the transmitter and the picture didn't lose reception or quality. Of course I may get different results when actually going down the road with all sorts of interference. Thanks again!

Does the EC170-11 camera protect in "reverse" in the Screen, just like a rear view mirror, for safer view? Or is there an option to make it so?

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  8 років тому +2

Well my monitor shows it in reverse like a mirror but I am not sure if it is coming from the camera that way or if it is in the transmitter that it is reversed. Your right that is safer, looking at the screen just feels like a rear view mirror.n There are no options in the camera, its just plug it in and it outputs an image. Maybe i will see if i can plug it into a TV directly to see what it outputs. Good question.

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  8 років тому

Its really hard to say without tearing into the system but its most likely an analog signal from the camera, which means you could splice it into the same transmitter I used in this video then transmit it to the Tablet. See the link for that transmitter in the description. The camera still may be black and white however.
Otherwise you would need a Tablet capable of a video input feed, most likely mini HDMI. Then get some sort of RCA to HDMI converter. Like this amzn.to/2dQY893 then you will need this to get the mini HDMI amzn.to/2dyMhyy . There are not many tablets with HDMI input however.
Another option would be to just get a new flat panel screen, they dont const much these days.

A back-up camera would be a good secondary use. This is just what I wanted!. 12v power is very safe and cannot hurt you. Its simple to wire to 12v power. Remove your light cover and you will see 2 wires. Usually white and black. White is neutral or ground, and black is power. Take off the wire nuts and add the wires for your camera power (Usually red-power and black-ground). Put the wire nuts back on and reinstall the light cover.

Do you think it would be possible to install multiple camera / transmitter units for a 360 security view around motorhome?...Separate icons on screen, for separate cameras? Would they each transmit separate signals?

Arranging Power source to the transmitter and camera is still a problem. It not easy to open up the wiring of the car. I wish we can use battery instead. it will require recharge but may be simpler to install.

Max101 If you tap in to the power supply for the reverse lights on your vehicle the camera will automatically turn on when the vehicle is put in reverse. If you want it on all the time while the vehicle is running just tap into the power supply for your running lights.

Max, I ordered a 12V AA battery pack from Amazon that hooks straight up to the power plug of the wifi transmitter. works like a charm. First use Morton on the Move's Amazon link so they get credit for the purchase. Then : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F6LHMR6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

IF you MAKE an RCA cable where you either twist the power leads about 12 turns per foot OR use twisted pair wire (CAT-6 shielded for example), you can bridge all 4 pairs into +/- and terminate the RCA connectors. IF you use a SHIELDED cable, you MIGHT be able to connect the shields at each end, but not really necessary.... in fact.... Just use good quality CAT5/6/7 Unshielded twisted pair.
Additionally or alternatively, you can put some turns of wire through torroids at each end of the cable to suppress any external interference entering the power cable (long loop antenna if not twisted pair) and then corrupting the video signal.

My big question is if I use that transmitter and my Samsung 4 can I run a signal from the back of a 30ft camper up to the front of a crew cab 3/4 ton truck that pulls it? It is almost impossible because of the way Coleman made the bottom of the camper to run wires from the back of the camper to the front hitch area. So I need a camera with a high power output wifi transmitter that WILL go easily say 50 feet through walls etc to the front seat of my truck. Will this unit do that? Also will a wifi booster / repeater work with this transmitter? Thanks Jimmy, wx9dx

I move this to my truck to assist when I hitch up y camper, I ended up buying a 12V Accessory plug that I plug into the truck accessory outlet, to the device power connector: Amazon: a.co/2bVAkmX
Then I also installed two 12V power outlets in my trailer with dual USB charger connections, one in my bedroom in the front of my trailer and one in the rear kitchen over the table. Now I have portable 12V connection and I don't have to wire permanently into the light. a.co/0zEwAjO
I got a camera that has an integrated LED illumination light and parking/distance lines like a built-in backup camera does. a.co/d8aQx8T
This 10 meter extension cable cost USD $10.95 a.co/9GcvCDS

I love this solution. I will begin the process of installing this on my my Toyota Tundra with a truck camper. I may even try to add an extra camera to the passenger side of the camper. So I don't need to ask: "can I get over?" Every time I pass a vehicle!

Just ordered the "kit", Trans, Camera and 30' RCA cable total: approx: $68.00 , this is about $41.00 less than a "good" 7" monitor/camera setup without recording feature. Again, thank You so much for this excellent solution! I've also gotten the "WifiAV HD " version of the app [Free]. I'll come back when I've received my Amazon shipment and finished my install. Youda Man!

Tom, you were a God Send. We were in the process of taking a trip to Missouri, spending two days in a hotel along with two days of rental car and a whole lot of money to have a rear view camera system installed on our Airstream.... then we saw your video! We spent less than $100, didn't have to change our travel plans and two days later we have a system like the one in your video up and running. We are just waiting a RCA extension cable/power to complete the project. Our Airstream (2014 International Serenity) came with a DC plug in a front cabinet. I just had to wire in a DC plug and we were good to go. Thank you soooo much.

Great video. Didn’t work for me for some reason. I wired transmitter to the light in front of my camper so I’m getting power and have connected to the WIFIAV. However when I pull up the app I see nothing. Doesn’t seem like I’m getting power to the camera. I have plugged the dc power out cord from the transmitter to the camera and have the av cords plugged up. Nothing. Any suggestions ? Is there some secret switch on the camera or is there a light on it that shows it is getting power? Any help appreciated before I send all this back

Ok, I found your video maybe 2 months ago and I ordered the parts you recommended and it works great! However, I'm taking it a few steps further and incorporating 2 cameras and a remote control switching system to toggle between the two cameras. I have two cameras, since my trailer is an enclosed cargo trailer, and one camera will monitor the trailer contents, and with a push of a button, I can activate the back-up camera. I got the remote system on Amazon (no surprise there, right?) that comes with two 4-button fobs and a circuit board with 2 relays and several operational options. It works beautiful too. Through the relays, I can choose which camera is feeding the 903W Wi-Fi transmitter, and I receive it on my iPhone. I recently bought a KINDLE FIRE 7 to use in the tow vehicle instead of my phone, problem is, it's Android and I need to find a way for it to accept "non-approved" software...that's the way Amazon has you by the short ones, if you know what I mean. Once I get that figured out, I can watch the inside of the trailer while I'm going down the road. Oh....I almost forgot...since I have an enclosed trailer, I also bought a 12 volt infrared illuminator that comes on with the inside camera....also the camera that's inside is not a reverse camera, but instead a "front" camera so the image doesn't look like you're looking in the mirror. Cheers!

Tech question. I have everything set up per your instructions. However I use an android OS & it's a little choppy but tolerable. So, I got to thinking, with the tablet I'm using, the sunlight overrides the screen at times. Anyway the wifi transmitter, transmits at 2.4ghz Do feel that any monitor that has a 2.4ghz wifi will operate I've been looking at of all things a baby monitor that has a 7" LCD screen and has its own 2.4ghz wifi antenna From a tech standpoint do you feel this will work?

Hope you kept one of your older phones around. Does not work with a Samsung 6,7,8. After wasting time troubleshooting, I finally read some of the reviews on the apps page. It did not work with my Samsung 7, but I happened to have my 5 still around and worked as described. Can not believe someone has not updated this (or, if so, I was unable to find it).

I installed this on my Roadtrek 190 Popular, wired to the tail lights (not the backup lights), so I can see what is back there at any time the lights are on. The wifi broadcasta from just inside the back door from the bottom of the storage shelf. Please note that the wifi works only with OS 10X or greater. I attached the ipad (7-inch) to the sunvisor with two velcro strips so that I could leave it running while driving, but not have it always providing a potential distraction. I am very happy with the system.

I am having problems with my expensive so called waterproof camera and came across this video. Seems like a great solution. Now I am just getting into the RV life and learning all the ins and outs. I have a question for which I have not found an answer for yet. How do I get Wifi on a moving vehicle. Now I know the answer is going to make me feel stupid but here it goes I am hitting enter.

Great hack. Ordered all of the same equipment and a 3 meter extension cable. Permanently mounted the camera to the top rear exterior of our 22' Wolf Pup RV and mounted the transmitter about mid trailer in a cabinet. Distance was not an issue receiving the signal to the front of the truck from there. The trailer charges the 12V onboard RV battery going down the road so continuously powering the camera and wifi transmitter while driving was no issue. Also works great while your parked and the truck is off running on battery only. I got a APPS2Car Universal Tablet CD Slot Car Mount Holder Stand as well on Amazon ($13.95) for my iPad mini which works even better than the suction cup windshield mount. Tablet is lower and my CD slot is on top of my head unit so Im not blocking the nav / audio screen.
