That's a lovely build. And I totally agree with you the quality of ply board I find it annoying that the prices go up while the quality goes down, I did at one point consider fill the voids with saw dust from my dust extraction but to be honest it's a lot of faffing about and time consuming as you then have to sand the edge flat etc so gave it up as a bad idea
I pump as much glue as i can into the void. Especially if it's an exposed end. I try to seal it off as best I can, preventing rain from getting into that void.
