    Could you share more insight on little owl nestbox, i live in india and want make best boxes for the Jungle Owlet (g.radiatum) the same size as little owls, they nest in woodpecker hollows here, deforestation has led to fragmentation of its distribution area, to revive this i wish to make an attempt by setting up boxes

    2 things I noticed. The first sanding disc you used didn't have suction holes in it to collect the dust and second, you didn't install the dust bag so a lot of the dust is now collecting in the filters.

    The prices some of these garden centers charge for boxes that are useless is criminal - I've seen bird boxes where the box it's self is very simple looks great and would probably be fit for purpose until you look at the roof which is clad in a highly polished metal (Polished enough to see my face in really well) which is aimed to compliment the bright colour of the box but will more than likely put the birds off using the box. And this box could of been yours for £17.50 or two for £30 needless to say I didn't spend any money and there still on the shelf.

    Some supermarket nest boxes can be really bad. I've seen them made out of metal. There ought to be laws against such poor boxes.

  • @VanderlyndenJengold
    @VanderlyndenJengold 28 днів тому

    There must be natural nest sites too, cavities and such. Do you check for them, and record what you find? I used to be great at that as a kid - think like a bird! I didn't like to interfere with the nests though - quick look, if that, and leave well alone.

    Love this build - we have a bat that visits our garden early evening so I've always thought about putting a box up but part of me thinks it would be pointless as we have a large area of very well established very old tall trees that are less than a minutes travel by wing away . The Leyland Chocolate masonry paint looks great too. I know what you mean about the weather in the higher parts of Wales I visited Devil Bridge whilst stay in Aberystwyth and as it was a hot day decided to wear my shorts to keep cool however whilst traveling up to the bridge in the mini railway carriage which are covered with half open sides and we entered the clouds the shorts combined with the mist and wet suddenly didn't seem the best plan but still such a very beautiful place and the natural waterfall was absolutely stunning.

      @@projectnestbox Mine are pretty rough and ready - many merely blocks of wood with holes drilled in them. Some with bamboo canes. This year I have erected a few with cardboard tubes that I can take out, clean and store ... and nothing has used them! Poor weather and siting I reckon. The bees like them boxes that have been up for a while and in a place they know. I'm experimenting with suspensions of bee poo in water painted on the front so they sniff it out. I've a lot of leafcutters this year, no mason bees as it was very cold and wet when they were supposed to be about. I watch and listen to a lot of entomologists to get the siting right and tackle mites and other predators, so I increase the healthy population. Planting a lot more flowers too.

    I put four of those up in a area where common pipistrelles were known to be. Never saw any evidence of a bat. Lots of spiders and moths, so something had some use of them.

    The metal plates are widely available on Etsy and Ebay, made in the UK, I will add if they can get into wood, they can get through the soft sign plastic. Only acrylic of a reasonable thickness will stand up to it.

    A guy gave me dozens of metal plates with holes of 25, 28 and 32mm I found that far easier for me than your method! Have you ever had a robin nest in a kettle? I've had a wren in a boot. I have a robin in my shed at the moment which means I don't have access to it.

      @@projectnestbox Ha! I had a wren in a coat's hood in the same shed the robin is in now. Closest I got to a wren, you notice their lovely colours. I'd open the door to the shed and the female would perch ready to fly if I went inside, so I didn't go inside for weeks. I thought I'd bird-proofed my shed ,yet they're back. I put up so many other potential nest sites for them too.

  • @VanderlyndenJengold
    @VanderlyndenJengold 5 місяців тому

    When I started making nest boxes I believe we were advised to use 9mm ply, nowadays RSPB and BTO would suggest 18mm plywood, and maybe marine plywood at that. That's not cheap. I did a local event where I got free wood from EH Smith and we made quite a few boxes with the community. I've made some woodcrete boxes that have been succesful, had a nuthatch in one of them. Fun, if tricky, to make. No joy with batboxes and owl boxes just had squirrels.

    Love your builds - as you know I make a few bird boxes in my job role and I'm just trying out the idea of adding an extra 2 or 3mm to the length of the sides and front plate to try and create a drip point to keep the rain flowing off the boxes as quickly as possible I've only made 1 of these so far as it was literally yesterday I came up with the idea and gave it a go.
