As I grew up my point was not to do anything I might regret. Now that I am old I see so many things that I didn't do and should have. I rejoice seeing people do what I cannot do anymore. It is too late for me, but through them I at least get some feel of it. The internet can be a marvelous thing.

      I agree.
One thing I’d like to ask. What was the reason for your inaction or allowing yourself to deny ? I have battled against those who tried to enforce their values on me all my life. To be a traveler you have to rebel against the conventional expectations of what life should be, you have to be strong in your conviction to follow your own path. Some are just not strong enough to rebel against this, restricting their life. If your outside the box you risk criticism.
I’ve managed to have a reasonable life of exploration, but not to the level of what I would really have liked. But At 58, I still have time.

So finally Michael Palins traveller torch has been passed to a worthy successor. Grand European tours, narrated in a style that harks back to the “old days” is a great reminder that there is still a place in our wandering roots for stories of foreign shores. Bravo Michael.

Dear Mr Michael..... for what ever your past politics, you have turned into a great raconteur , a skill so hard to learn when there are millions of voices all putting forward their views. To have the common touch, to explain in clear words , with a delivery which is slow and meaningful to be so easy to follow.... its a joy to be lead along your journey, which becomes our journey together. Never stop with these adventures it keeps our windows and food open ..... and like Jeff below I live in Bangkok, and with all the adventures here..... its great to have you back.

Long term British resident of Catalonia. Thanks for downloading this, newly discovered. Mixed feelings about, among other things Brexiteer, Portillo but after enjoying many of his Great Railway Journeys, including his visit to my own region, was looking forward to the chance to see this series. Worth a look for the stunning scenery and though heavily contrived of course, the style of presentation irritating in places, the added poignancy of Portillo's family connection with it made it very watchable. Hope it stays up long enough for me to get through all the episodes.

I was born in Calahorra (Rioja), relatively close to the Pyrenees in Navarra and Aragón, and I have appreciated the beauty of these mountains for a long time. Mr. Portillo is a rare example of a politician who transcended politics. Rare but not surprising, given his academic and family background. Congratulations!!

Fascinating. I lived in Barcelona for 9 months and drove from there to Calais passing the Pyrenees. I also made the journey from England to Switzerland a number of times but I was fascinated by the book 'Home Run' which showed all the escape routes out of Nazi occupied territory during the 2NDWW. A number of them would have names and go over the Pyrenees from occupied France to Barcelona and this video shows what they faced going over the Pyrenees. .

The pilgrimage has not been a continuous stream since the 9th century. It virtually died out after the Wars of Religion, and the Enlightenment. The upsurge began in the 1990s, after a very long period when scarcely a hundred people might arrive in Santiago in a year. Now, it's 1500 people per day in high season!

You are so entertaining, funny and with your gift of words, obviously, which is so far out of reach for Canadians it's very sad. I will be spending a month in Andalusia this February, solo travelling, and I hope our paths may cross! I'm sure having a coffee with you would be great delight Also, I think you might have said you live in Malaga? I just saw a documentary about the droughts in Andalusia and how it is affecting the environment. If it weren't for the golf courses and hotel pools, Im sure the nature would improve. I just suspect that's a topic amongst you and your friends.

The bombing of Guernica made the village famous by Picasso's picture but it was not the most painful in the Spanish Civil War, There were greater disasters such as the "espanta" in Malaga or the shootings of thousands of people In the bullring of Badajoz but Picasso (from Malaga) did not paint any pictures of those events 29:37

Es cierto te entiendo; pero al menos este cuadro no sólo representa el dolor de un pueblo Vasco como Guernica sino de toda la Guerra Civil Española Málaga etc . y todas las del mundo en general según se dice; saludos

The home arrangement (animals on the bottom and hey in the attic) is the common style in the Alps, not specific to Basque country. Difficult to determine where it started..

True. We had this here in Switzerland. France too. Italy. Austria. The lifestyle, food (cheese and dried meat anyone?) and culture is similar in many ways, all determined by the ecology. It's called Alpine pastorialism.

Yes, my mother in-laws' family house in Auvergne, south central France, was the same; I think this was a very widespread practice.
