    You can actually start with a 1x1x1 (internal) smeltery and automate seared bricks with it using just a hopper and a timer.
    You just feed in cobblestone and lava, and can grow your smeltery as the seared bricks pour. It means you don't need stacks of clay, sand, and gravel to get started.

      This is how I did it in Agrarian skies to get the smeltery going early.

    Am I the only one who makes the Tinkers Tools before the regular Minecraft tools? from Wood to Iron to Iron with Obsidian Fortification to Cobalt, add a Paper Binder and Treated Wood Tool Rod and 5 Reinforcement Upgrades! I use Livingwood Tool Rods when PlusTic and Botania are included in the pack I'm playing and recently I learned that you can have a fast Cobalt Pickaxe Head and an Enderium Binder for Global Traveller! Before that I used Platinum for Global Traveller!

      I always start with Tinker's tools in modded. And I keep my original tools all the way through the playthrough upgrading them slowly. And after I move away from them to something like the drill or other powered tools, I put them in item frames in my HoF room where retire some things.

    • @scotpgot
      @scotpgot 7 років тому +5

      You can put lava and water directly into the smeltery, then pull the obsidian in blocks.

    • @kylekroeker9514
      @kylekroeker9514 7 років тому +2

      For my pick it is usually bone handle, flint binding, stone head to start, then obsidian head, copper binding, bone handle. Late game cobalt, copper, handle cobalt or ardite. If I have TTL, first upgrades to unbreaking, then luck.

      Or you can make knightslime.

    Thank you for these videos. I just recently started playing with ftb modpacks, and I have been so overwhelmed not knowing where to start and how to accomplish anything. Your videos are great because you take the time to explain how things work and what your doing. I feel a little more confident to try getting into some of the mod stuff now. :)

    • @Mirality
      @Mirality 7 років тому +1

      Clay really blends in with sand and can be hard to see underwater with the default textures. I use the Soartex/Invictus resource pack which makes water more transparent and clay more blue, and it's really easy to find everywhere.

    • @darrellcollins2909
      @darrellcollins2909 6 років тому

      I always add Invictus_Modded_Universal resource pack to all "Let's Play" packs. Not only does it make clay easier to see, the Invictus textures make blocks like granite, diorite, andesite, sandstone and even cobble stone into really attractive building blocks. I chisel diorite to polished diorite to make great ceiling tiles.

    I love this new series, Dire! and just a suggestion - take a door down with you when searching for clay - you can stand in the air pocket and dig it up faster without taking breaks to breathe :)

    Thank you. Enjoying the explanation of simple things which are often overlooked. The blue/orange colouring on the Thermal expansion sides interface; shift clicking with the wrench to break items etc. I'm sure it is boring to people familiar with the mods, but if you're looking to get more people using them this kind of explanation is very useful. A brief intro to how you use JEI so quickly and efficiently would be useful too, along with some of the keyboard shortcuts you are using by default with the pack.

    It's true! Dire really does have literally tons of lava. The density of magma is generally greater than 2200kg/m^3. A metric ton is 1000kg. Each bucket of lava is 1m^3. 2200kg/m^3*20m^3 = 44000kg. That's over 40 metric tons!

  • @Kiyuji

    Dire, the Seared Window acts as a tank for the smeltery... There's Seared Glass you can use instead, it's better looking anyway. I'm pretty sure it also has connected textures.

    Note to all beginners, you can put cobblestone throught he smeltery to a casting basin and "grow" your smeltery. Once the cobble is cast it turns into a plain smeltery block.

    Your items get into the furnace because your furnace is beside the crafting station, it allows access to the furnace from the station, when this feature combines with the weird 1.12 bugs of shift clicking recipes and general inventory management it considered the furnace slot like any other and uses it in sorting and stuff

    Hey dire. Im not sure if you know this but a little mining-tip for mining underwater. If you place a door on the bottom of the "sea" do you mine clay like you are on land and you dosent have to go to the surface for air. Great series by the way! keep it up

  • @GhostWeapon95

    Dire honestly you should try to be realy creative and you have to think outside the box this time around, else this will get boring realy fast if we're going to see almost the same setups as last season. Also the lack of new mods on 1.12 won't help. Age of engineering was realy appealing 'cause it was realy different and made you think outside the box quite a bit.

    • @b-bunnygaming9493

      lol Agreed, I really wish he would do something different. I honestly got bored of his season 8 because he didn't do anything really interesting. Always doing the same kind of base, same look. Played on this world he made, there's plenty of clay in the pools around where he was , didn't need to go to the sea to find clay..
    Also am i the only one who uses 1 drain but have 2 faucets on front and side so you save yourself 6 bricks...
    I also throw loads of cobble back into the smeltery to turn them into bricks, so i can make a bigger smeltery without having to go looking for resources.
    Direwolf, make a portal to the mining dimension, although you're just as likely to get killed by monsters in there and also there's normal monsters like creepers, etc in the nether aswell..

  • @kylekroeker9514
    @kylekroeker9514 7 років тому

    I know it is a lot of resources, but gathering three stacks of gravel, sand, and clay will make a 5*5 smeltery with 3 high walls and just enough seared bricks left over for a tool forge.

  • @nekoandroid2635
    @nekoandroid2635 7 років тому +3

      Not hating on your videos, but could you add a pressure plate for your double door entrance?

    • @DoormanJoe
      @DoormanJoe 7 років тому +4

      For some reason, he has never done that. I don't think there's ever been a time it didn't retain liquids, but since Tinker's doesn't have a 'wrench' to specially pick up the tank, he thinks it doesn't retain liquids. Same with the windows/gauges holding more lava, he's just never done it. Doesn't occur to him it's an option. May as well hope he makes slime tools... ever. Or a Tinker's axe before Broad, or a Scythe, or any TCon weapon besides a broadsword.
      I like his content, but I've accepted for the most part that it's the same content.

    • @TheItzal11
      @TheItzal11 7 років тому +1

      yeah pretty sure you're right and he just doesn't know that it retains
      also lately he always go for a bronze sword to match his pick when he has access to silver which has I believe double the damage plus bonus to undead

    I just dont get why he doesnt make a Toolforge directly. For mining the Hammer is waay better that a pick

    • @b-bunnygaming9493
      @b-bunnygaming9493 7 років тому +3

      Do you normally start with a hammer? Because it takes a hell of a lot of iron which people don't generally have early on. 27 to be exact. So you need a pick anyway to get the iron you would need for it... right? So why not get a pick? Plus, the hammer can only mine in a 3x3. So again, you will need a pick anyway. The other issue is the hammer takes a lot of resources to build itself. 8 for the head, and 16 for the plates, and 3 for the tough tool rod. So another 27 of materials that can honestly be used for other things.
      Not everyone enjoys mining, especially since it's not very entertaining. So if saving some materials means being able to do other things, generally people will choose to do those other things than using them, and having ot go mining again right after.

    • @paulruhe66
      @paulruhe66 7 років тому +2

      B-Bunny Gaming Well dire has about 3 Stacks of Iron...
      I prefer to make the Hammer out of Stone and wood ( +Diamond and restone)
      That was also my point: Mining sucks. And if you can mine 9 times as fast why shouldn't you.

    • @b-bunnygaming9493
      @b-bunnygaming9493 7 років тому

  • @Kiyuji
    @Kiyuji 7 років тому +1

    If all you wanted was a better mining level, you could have just outright made an obsidian sharpening kit and put that on a stone pickaxe and you'll be able to mine anything with it. I always do that because why not. Then I replace the head with netherrack when I get to the nether because it's better and still really cheap to repair.

    • @shirothefish9688
      @shirothefish9688 7 років тому

      Kiyuji well repair costs don't matter too much thanks to flux infused upgrades, but it's a good idea to just make the kit. Maybe he's just too used to doing it the old way or prefers it (like me).

    I'm gonna predict Dire's new LP.
    He makes tinkers tools. He builds a base made out of chiseles cobblestone boxes with a RS system and Actually Additions powerlines. He rushes Draconic Evolution. After becoming literally God, he builds a few 'interesting' contraptions, before pretending Enderman blew up his base.
    Number of mods in the pack 60+
    Number of mods Dire made use of ~10
    Quote me on it.

    I know creeper explosions are _supposed_ to be a pain in the tuchus, no pun intended, but sometimes they seem unfair. I'm okay with there being a chance of blocks it blows up being totally destroyed, instead of dropping as an item - but if you've got items IN that block when it's destroyed - they should really be a guaranteed item drop.

    You should have made the sword blade out of obsidian. That has 4.2 instead of 3.5 and with the water and lava turning into obsidian in the smeltery trick its easy to obtain.

    I think its been said every single episode he does Tinkers in, but Smeltery Glass, and Smeltery Windows ALL can hold Lava. They also use less grout then a Seared Tank, and are considered by the Smeltery to be a Tank Item. Why Dire Doesn't do this Idk, but who honestly cares by this point. He's got a way, and has done it for the last 5 or so seasons of his FTB Sponsored Modpack Lets Plays. Also by the way, you can output any Items in a smeltery at Any y level of the Smeltery, even the very top!

    Dire, the reason you're getting mob spawns is because you're not lighting your caves up properly. It's also the reason why you're getting double whammys from Creepers after sleeping in a bed and venturing outside. :D Light up a bit of your life, please! :D

      pretty much the first thing when i dig down to bedrock to craft bunch of cobble stairs and place them while i going up, so much time saving :) or u just dig down a 2*1 hole and place a water blokk at one bottom, on the other the ladders, this way you can get faster down but slower up :)

    Dire, I think you'd have a much easier time surviving at night if you made a Tinkers Construct battle sign. If placed in your offhand, it acts just like a vanilla shield, with the advantage of being easily repaired and modified. I won't beg for likes, but if you agree with me, feel free to make sure Dire sees this comment.

    Why didn't he go with obsidian for his first tool? You can make it in the smelter and it has cobalt mining level, reinforced, and higher mining speed than bronze. And easier to get more for repair (just add lava and water into the smeltery to get some)

      there will be no Lost Cities world gen this way, you have to go in a seperate dimension by right clicking a bed on 2 diamond blocks surrounded with 6 skulls (and you need one more set of these items on you if you wanna go back to overworld, unless charged porters :) )
