  • Sifu Chong demonstrates the use of the "8 Cutting" or "Butterfly Knives"
In close quarters combat, these are probably the most effective weapons you could use.
The thumbnail is my pair of My Masterpath Austrian D2 steel blades from everythingwingchun.com
Training with them is like a combination of Tai Chi relaxation, and a sturdy resolve.

the length of a butterfly sword is the same as an indonesian golok and are handled similarly, except that the golok has a ball shaped handle which is used to both strike and fit in the palm of the hand for quick and easy manipulation of the blade from forward to reverse grip. there are interesting parallels between the two blades. thanks for posting!

      I LOVE MY BUTTERFLY SWORDS!!!!
The ones in the thumbnail are my own. They are from Bohler D2 steel and handmade in batches of three pairs for each run.
      Fantastically sharp!

As someone far more familiar with balisongs, the usage of the term butterfly knife applies to them as well and is an equally valid term. It’s a colloquial term that came about because Benchmade was the first company in the US to popularize balisongs and they have a butterfly as their logo. Benchmade’s original company name was actually Bali-song but the term butterfly knife became associated with the thpe of knife due to their logo.

You are right that one of the names of the Baat Jaam Do is butterfly knives.
That being said, the US "colloquialism" is wrong. Colloquialism is slang, and they got it wrong.
I'm just trying to set the record straight.

Let me give you an example. "Bunghole" is a colloquial term for the anus, but it is technically a hole in a barrel that you pour from. You may understand that Bunghole usually means anus, but you also know that the term is wrong.
      I hope that makes sense.

@@goyoelburro To say a colloquialism is wrong is such a bitter contrarian statement that just wants to argue with what has become a common term in a language. If I said that your knife was cool, but then you said that the term cool is slang is wrong because the knife isn’t cool it’s warm to the touch, you’re arguing with an accepted term in modern English that has evolved beyond its intial meaning. Sure the knife might not be physically cool as in cold, but that’s not the only definition of the word anymore. Yeah the technically correct terms for the knife don’t include “butterfly knife”, but to say that it is wrong to call it a butterfly knife is such a stupid take. You’re not arguing with me, you’re arguing with the modern English language which you, nor I, can change.

@@goyoelburro Ask yourself what would someone else think of when hearing the term? If the average person heard you say the word bunghole, they’re not going to assume first that you mean a hole in a barrel, their going to assume you mean an anus. It’s not wrong, because language is determined by its users and words can and regularly do change meanings over time. If I called you a faggot, would you immediately think I was calling you a small bundle of sticks? No, you wouldn’t, because language isn’t static and terminology is defined by how the average person uses it in daily language.
