    I absolutely loved his delivery on that last line. He's been introducing himself to every single person he's met using those exact same words, but at the end, when Ruby finally gets a grasp of who he is and what he might be, you never get tired of hearing the tone in his voice when he repeats himself, and the gravitas of the words: "I'M THE DOCTOR!"

    Loved the episode. Mavity must play into the timeline thing, surely?
    15th also gave off a very different sense of intelligence. The Doctor was always somewhat of a superhero, but this is a Doctor who is truly a science hero with the use of gadgets. I hope we see more of this as it was a missed opportunity with 13th's brief glimpses of engineering. Plus the language use aspect to solve problems. Loved it.

      It’s either this season's "Bad Wolf/Torchwood/Saxon" buzz word that will pay off in a finale…. Or it will now be used as a way to overtly state that the Whoniverse is a parallel universe to ours and thus give RTD more creative freedom.

    I thought the goblins were a really great for an intro to doctor who. Coincidences being powerful and meaningful is very on par (bad wolf popping up everywhere, clara's whole existences, etc), the doctor explaining how goblins use time and accidents was a great way to use something the audience is familiar with (goblins are tricksters and cause bad luck) and tell us a lot about the world, and gives us such great characterization for the doctor (he's brilliant and clearly knows a lot about almost everything, but he's really excited about encountering a new science). They looked great, the song was awesome, and the wondering about whether goblins cause all bad luck is something I'm definitely going to be using (yes every time I drop anything or lose my keys, it is absolutely the goblins fault)

    Tyrell saying he had reservations about the goblins was quite refreshing to me - not because I necessarily agreed, but because I assumed they'd never be allowed to express negativity in an official podcast. Makes me a bit more convinced these opinions are honest!
    EDIT: And then they weren't wholly positive about the sonic either!! Again, I disagree, but this is really nice to see!

    • @CineScarborough
      @CineScarborough 9 місяців тому +8

      I agree, I had thought because it was official they would all have to be positive, so it's nice that they are giving them the freedom to be critical. Reminds me of Doctor Who Magazine in that respect.

    • @intergalactic92
      @intergalactic92 9 місяців тому +2

      I did find it weird that they were surprised by the design considering it was revealed a while ago, unless they mean their first reaction to it being revealed.
      But I agree it is refreshing for one of them to be overtly negative, maybe it’s a result of them growing in confidence with the format. They’ve previously made comments that sounded like they wanted to be negative but were scared to say so.

  • @CineScarborough

    Mrs Flood is the Rani I think. For a flood, you need rain, and rain is an anagram of Rani. The Rani is just teasing who she probably sees as nothing more than 'dumb humans' by playing the role of the nosy neighbor, kind of like Agatha Harkness in the Marvel Studios series WandaVision.

  • @alexfletcher5192

    A dynamic start - although I think it might have peaked early (as you tend to do at Christmas) with the Goblin Song. In context it's even more of a banger! Those ready to complain about Ncuti and Millie on singing duties ought to recall a certain Jon Pertwee breaking into early black pop or light opera at the drop of a hat in his early days. Now we are faced with our hero perhaps being responsible for introducing magic and superstition into our universe in the first place (leading to the interesting thought that he might have inadvertently created The Toymaker et al due to a mistake - see also the Daleks). Will this be a device to retcon certain changes in the mythos? At least it's an explanation.

    Greetings of the Season to all!
    And thank you so very much, as always, for the video.
    As a young Californian just starting school while living in England I fell in love with Doctor Who! (But then came the great drought when I returned to the states and had to wait years for my friends to see what I so often talked about.) (Why I think Jon Pertwee, not "my first Doctor" William Hartnell, is my favorite.) And now the new season (series?) is so much a gift that keeps giving. Donna and Rose reminded me so much of my oldest child, who I still occasionally miss-gender, but they laugh and give me a hug, and tell me they know I care, and try. An awesome new and exciting Doctor! And an adopted child - a couple of years ago I met my birth father (and brother) (alas my mum had passed) and the new Rose character is awesome.
    I take comfort that whenever something new comes out, there seems to be a flood of criticism that follows, but I think it's easy to spot the fans who care (and can both like and dislike) and those who are just looking to make noise. And you folks, I think, are true fans.

    What I particularly enjoyed about this podcast was that they were allowed to say if they had reservations about something. There was not universal love for the new sonic for example. I had no issue with it myself, but I appreciated that the podcasters have not been told that they have to say “everything is awesome” which means their opinions are actually their opinions and not just propaganda. Great pod, well done all.

    I like that the sonic looks more like a remote or digi-gadget. The old ones never really looked like screwdrivers anyway. The esthetic doesn't bother me at all. I see it as a refreshing step into the third millennium.
    The gloves? Meh.
    I was initially confused how one baby would feed a hoard of goblins, but became even more confused when first they said the feast would last three days (in song), but later were attempting to feed the tiny baby (either/both) into the giant goblin king's maw...idk, sometimes you just growl, "Russell!", you laugh, you cry, you move on...
    I thought the woman sharing Ruby's bad luck might be her birth mother, but then why use Davina? I've created a whole back story for Mrs. Flood.
    I LOVE Cherry and Carla. So sad and endearing to see what a difference Ruby makes in their lives and they made in hers.
    All this long-winded guff to say, I LOVE the new Doctor and Ruby (& family) and I really am glad to have Russell back.
    Happy Christmas 🤶

    Thanks for the video and updates. I think it would be a conundrum if this were the first Dr. Who that you ever saw. Sad because you have missed so many great episodes. But wonderous because you have finally entered the Whoniverse, and there is so much to explore. It is great that there are not many episodes that were lost. So many shows in the United States were lost because studios were trying to save money and they recorded over previous shows. Then there were the shows that were lost because of the expense of storing the old video became too much. Thankfully the studios for Dr. Who are bigger on the inside, so plenty of storage space!

    I ****loved**** it! Both my daughter and I were all "Awwwwwww!" when he spoke with the bobby about the ring! I also got to explain to her that part of the fun of Dr Who is getting to know each Doctor because while they're the same, they're different.
    I personally believe the purpose of bigeneration is to shuck off the accretion of mental and emotional trauma that builds up and ends up bogging the Doctor down. I mean, how can it not?
    "Does it make my hard sci-fi bones shake"? No! The whole point of Doctor Who is you never know what you're going to pull out of the bag - i mean, dinosaurs in space? the french revolution? vampires? haunted space suits? and, of course and foremost, Angels!
    ruby and the sundays - my daughter instantly asked "What happened to the fridge?" and when i saw, it really got me in the gut - even more than her changed personality.
    cherry sunday gives me such strong "Wilf" vibes - I'm so happy to meet her! I hope she sticks around and is a big part of the series, not just window-dressing.
    What if this was the first episode - well, it IS, isn't it? every new doctor, it's a new introduction to a new show. it's wonderful.
    Mrs Flood breaking the fourth wall at the end was incredible!

    As for the new sonic, the best I can say is that at least it isn't sonic sunglasses, but that's damning with faint praise.
    The gloves are fantastic.
    The goblins looked like somebody (I'm looking at you, Russell) said, "Oh good, we can afford more expensive villains now and Disney has DreamWorks; let's take advantage of it." Come on! One of the hallmarks of _Doctor Who_ has always been the cheap but imaginative villains and special effects. Please don't start just throwing money at it.

    I LOVED it! my only criticism is, the new sonic looks very stupid, but maybe ill get to love it over time. Also I wasn't sure about the singing. But I do think that was simply an episodic thing. Given how silly even the goblins singing a pop song was. But it worked for the scenario.
    This was what doctor who meant to me. While each regeneration brings their own touch, at its core, after 9, the renewed Doctor Who was about emotions and characters and just stupid fun. Something that Jodie Whittaker sadly could not display cause of shoddy writing. She so brilliant as the doctor, but the settings with 13 and the characters could never compliment her. I barely got through her seasons. I really wish she comes back for a special.
    But my god, Ncuti, Ruby and really everyone looks mad fun. This was such a joyous episode with the right amount of tension and emotions. A brilliant christmas episode.
    I cannot wait for the rest of the season and grandma Cherry and the neighbor Mrs Flood to show up in future episodes. Im so happy with all the decisions they have taken so far.

Four went all Sherlock Holmes for The Talons of Weng Chiang... We seldom see a Doctor change clothes within the same story, admittedly. Fifteen will be changing clothes more frequently, though; I suspect there'll be at least a subtext of, of not a commentary on, white privilege previously enjoyed by The Doctor through Earth's history. I think that Ruby is the Doctor's biological daughter. The first scene before the opening credits shows the doctor in tears as he watched Ruby being abandoned in front of the church. Such a reaction right off the bat wouldn't be normal for him at all even though we're dealing with a new Doctor personality. The fact that we have no idea who her mother and father are and that her birth parents can't be traced using her genetic code supports this theory. Even if her birth parents were dead, there would still be a paper trail to follow and they'd appear in a database somewhere. I think her genetic code has a natural biological cloaking function which makes it look human normal when it's analyzed using human technology. I really hope that my theory is prove to be correct. That would be one hell of a plot twist.

    • @neopagan1976
      @neopagan1976 9 місяців тому +2

      @thomas_vd That's altogether possible. However, I think there's far more to it than that and that there is a far deeper mystery to solve. That usually turns out to be the case when it comes to this show. I have a gut feeling that her true identity will be slowly revealed throughout the new season in the spring of 2024. My gut feelings haven't led me astray yet. Then again, there's always first time for everything.

    • @neopagan1976
      @neopagan1976 9 місяців тому +2

      @@TheyTookMyFace - I highly doubt that opening scene was an immediate time cut. Such a premise would only cheapen the episode and the Doctor's emotional reaction. This show's better than that. The following scenes show him watching over her for a very long while. He wouldn't need to do that if there wasn't a deeper connection with her. If that scene was really nothing more than him going back in time to rescue her, his emotional reaction wouldn't be warranted or even necessary. There's even speculation that Ruby's birth mother is actually River Song who is the Doctor's wife. If this possibility turns out to be the case, it would actually prove my theory. Remember that The Doctor and River Song once spent a single night together on Derillium and that night lasted a full 24 years. It's only natural that they would've gotten frisky at some point.

They've never brought any aspect of Grimm's fairy tales into a plotline of a Doctor who episode before. The concept of a bigeneration is completely new for this show and so was the revelation that the Doctor isn't even a Galifreyan in the first place. If you don't like the direction this show is heading in, that's your own problem.
