- Here’s a 1 year look at the Pilot Custom 823 and pros & cons of how it’s been writing over several months. Writing sample at the end on cheap copy paper!
This pen only comes in 2 colors: Amber (this one) and Smoke. Also comes with a nice sized bottle of Namiki Blue ink.
Happy Fountain Pen Day 2022 ✒️

Couldn’t love my pilot custom heritage 823 more, absolutely my EDC and can’t live without.
I’m afraid that I’m turning into a Pilot Pen girl! The quality and consistency is hard to beat.
What’s another EDC for you?
Just came across this video, thank you so much! I have this pen in the cart. There are a few pilots on my wish list! I am 100% a Pilot girl! I don’t care what people say/think, my Metropolitan is always in my currently inked line-up. It’s my first fountain pen, it’s where my FP journey began and has never disappointed! I can’t wait to own the 823!
I looovvve my Pilots! They make me so happy 😀 I also love my Metro- it’s on my comparison for every pen! What other Pilot pens are on your wish list? How do you feel about Pilot inks?
@@KitchenCounterCrafts I also have 2 Kakunos. My wish list is the Custom 823 (clear - now available in USA or Amber), E95s in burgundy, my grail pens are the Pilot Custom Urushi in Vermillion ($1,500) and of course the Namiki Emperor in Vermillion ($2,100). 😍 baby steps! I’ll get there!
@@carolyncoppola974 oh wow! From $12 to several $1000s! That’s quite a range! My friend won a custom urushi at the Dallas pen show last year- can you imagine??? I was so happy for her! Plus, we all got to try it out. So cool!
I have the E95 in burgundy & a video, if you’d like to see!
I love that thing! It’s smooth like butter!
Don’t wait on that one- it’s a great price for a gold nib!

This pen is definitely on my wish list. Maybe for next year. I noticed that Pensachi has a transparent version, as well. I really appreciate a review based on a whole year's experience with the pen. Thanks!
It is definitely something I would purchase again and something worth saving up for!!! It's a daily writer. I'm so glad you liked this!
Cool video showing your real world feedback from using this pen over one year. Appreciate this form of review where the pen has been through the rigors of writing.
I am a super new user to the world of fountain pens.. This pen was on my sister's grail pen list and she is a daily writer or journalist type of person who has been using quite a few varieties of FPs.
I got to try a few of her pens from twsbi, opus, pelikan, Metropolitan, kaweco, jinhao, Noodler's, preppy and other I think.
The I went down to a physical pen shop to try and what a difference it is between those pens and a custom 823.😅😅
Welcome!!! Thank you for watching and for your encouragement!
I’m so excited for you to start this wonderful hobby! It’s not just a hobby but it’s practical and useful. Pens are used for writing every day- why not enjoy the process and slow down? One of the most amazing thing is being able to feel the pen interact with the paper.
Just wonderful!
I love that you were able to go to a pen shop to try out! Check out pen clubs and shows. If you google “Pelikan hubs,” you should be able to find pen people near you!
Your sister sounds like she’s a good influence! 😂 your wallet might not think so!
I have 2 videos for beginners on pens and starter inks! Let me know if you have questions!💝
I agree with the closing comments about collecting and chasing pens. My 823 is exactly what it claims to be and is excellent at it.
Ahhhhh... yes, in theory it's about getting the quality item but alas, I am a collector and cannot help myself!!! I bought a Pilot Lucina and love it, I love my Pilot Falcon and now am thinking about a Pilot Justus. How about you? Are you a Pilot fan or do you like other ones?
You have beautiful handwriting. Our son collects fountain pens and I shall share this video with him.
Thank you so much for watching, Dolores! I am so encouraged by you!!! 💗
My Pilot Custom 823 has a Broad nib and I absolutely love it! I also have the the Platinum 3776 in UEF, SF, and B nibs. I love them all! It depends on the paper and purpose of my writing. 🖋I find my Pilot Custom 823 and TWSBI Vac700r Iris to be quite easy to clean and flush.
2 questions. Compare the 823 to your century 3776 please? And how smooth does the 823 write or how does it feel to write & what nib do you own? Thanks
@@angellondian7628 Yes, I plan a video to compare the 823 B nib to the Platinum 3776 B nib for smoothness/performance. I did receive a new cartridge for the Platinum as it currently has the provided cartridge. I want to use the same ink in both pens for the comparison.
I have the pen in the medium. I'm tempted to get the black/smoke one in a fine
Ohhhh! I really debated between the amber and smoke. I think both are very pretty. My love for antique sepia writing won and that’s why I have the amber
Great review! I have one in a fine job as well, super smooth writer. If you like more feedback a 3776 has a little more and a sailor 1911L has quite a bit more feedback. With any vac fill it’s not a pen that’s made to switch inks regularly so if that’s the case go with a converter. Also yes you need a good amount of ink to fill this bad boy, but if you have a small amount of ink left, you could just pour it into an ink vile and would help fill this pen, if you find that your bottle is running low, but the trade off is that it lasts such a long time unlike a converter that needs to be filled more regularly.
Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your experience! I love me some feedback! :) I think it's because I love writing with dip pens for calligraphy that I am always looking for that marvelous scratch against the paper.
I may need to check out the 3776 for sure! I LOVE the Sailors!!! The only thing keeping me from that investment is not enough ink capacity for my long writing sessions.
Thanks for the good info on the ink too - I get all nervous when getting to the bottom of the ink, so I buy another bottle. It's kinda like my gas tank. At a bit less than 1/4 tank and I start to panic! Hahaha (yes, I have lots and lots of issues)! 😁
@@KitchenCounterCrafts If ink capacity is a big must-have, consider a TWSBI Eco if you don’t mind a steel nib. Those things hold TONS of ink. I have one in a stub nib, and I wouldn’t say you could do calligraphy with it but it defiantly gives my writing a classic look, and it’s super fun to write with. They’re inexpensive so you can get one just to try and the nibs are interchangeable. It is a piston fill, hence why it holds so much ink but they even come with a tool and they’re easy to disassemble for cleaning. If you do try a 3776 I love my Mediums, the Fine and Soft fine, not so much. The Medium puts out a nice line and to me it’s that perfect mix of softness and control. While I love my sailor I feel you need to have a lighter touch of hand when writing and writing for too long with it kind of tired my hand out, and I never have that problem with Pilot of Platinum. I’m not sure what I want next personally I sued to do some calligraphy in fact I have a calligraphy quill set that I bought once from like a hobby store and it’s never been used, but even then their dip pens so maybe that’s what has kept me from using them. I’m interested in maybe a Lamy Safari stub, they have one on 1.9, while my TWSBI is a 1.1.
@@Roughdraft214 Oh wow! Thank you again for your advice! You are on point about the TWSBI Eco. I have (ummmm) a "few" of those! Like, one in my purse, one in my pencil bag, one on my desk... They are definite work horses. I appreciate the info on the 3776 - sounds like I might have to look into a Medium. I love my shimmer and sheen inks. I keep ordering Fine nibs for my writing but they are too thin to show the ink variations.
I just uploaded a video on the affordable Pilot Prera -- I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE CM NIBS!!! Check it out for your calligraphy. I cannot believe how wonderfully that little thing writes!
I am hoping to get one soon, I think I am going to go with the amber but can't make up my mind if I want a fine or medium. I'm wanting an all around business pen but with a very smooth writing experience.
I think this might be the ONE for you then. The amber is very pretty to look at -- prettier in person for sure. I usually write on bad paper, so Fine tends to suit me better. I like Mediums now because they show the ink color better but for everyday writing, I would personally go with the Fine. However, I have friends who would never use a Fine and swear by their Mediums 🤷🏽♀
Might be late but I am usually a xf and fine guy but I went with medium on this one and it is great, more of the fine side of medium.
I went with the Medium & love it, one of these days I will get a fine in the smoke color but as for now this medium is my most used pen!@@luigig6256
I have Diamine Writers Blood in my smoke Pilot Custom 823 broad nib. I’m using Oxford Blue in my Pelikan M nib. 🖋
Ooooh, Writer's Blood!!! So pretty! I think Diamine is one of the best brands for Ink. Have you heard of Nick Stewart?
@@KitchenCounterCrafts Diamine and Robert Oster inks are my two favorites. I have not heard of Nick Stewart, but will surely check them out. Thanks for the tip!
@@MarcellHobbs He is a British artist who plays with Diamine inks - these are the most gorgeous ink samples I have seen!!! Check out his blog where he posts his Diamine ink swatches. 😍
@@KitchenCounterCrafts Awesome! Yes,mi looked him up. I’m quite impressed 🖋
This vs Pelican m800?
That would be make a great comparison! I don’t own one yet!😊 do you have a Pelikan M800?
I’d love to know more about what you think
