I’ve read Meditations three times and never once had I thought that the common themes could be representative of the times when, actually, he needed to remind him that he didn’t behave in a way that he should. You’re completely right. My journal doesn’t talk about the times I extolled Stoic virtues. It only includes the parts when I struggled to live up to my expectations of myself! A very grounding and humbling thought. Also reminds us that Stoicism is a practice, and a discipline, and something we should continue to strive for

I am going to have to look that translation up. I have the Robin Waterfield translation and it amazes me how different it is than the Harvard Classics version. Great video as always. Question--do you read any or much in the way of contemporary books? I do here and there, but the more older books I read, the less interested I feel about today's books. And I don't mean that to sound elitist; there is good stuff out there, but I just find myself drawn to older material.
I do not read any new novels or fiction honestly. I read newer biographies such as Andrew Robert's, Chernow, and Isaacson, but trying to keep up with the Harvard Classics has me mostly reading older works. Once you get to writers like Baon and Milton you realize that no one today is anywhere close to their capability because of the time they would devote to the art or writing. Even with my kids, I have found that older books have more character-building and morals. Heidi and Pollyanna come to mind. I do read newer books when it comes to Atomic Habits and books like that. So you are not alone my friend!

omg wait did you actually change the title haha crushing the first 30 seconds as always lol I like how you just casually grab the republic off your desk like oh yeah btw I have this man the micro cuts are so good at clearing the pauses I almost didn't realize that the video was more than 15 minutes - although the second half did feel a bit quote heavy it might be interesting to see a video or two after 6 months worth of videos as compilations of a few different topics that you talked about like: famous quotes I rephrased, classic ethics I agree with, classical ideas/ideals which belong in the classroom, philosophers whose work must be read differently, Ranking the 50 Harvard Classics

I've read it twice so far. It has been very helpful to me in my life and work. The Gregory Hays translation is particularly good.
