This is one of the rare rom-coms I love. The “too much pepper in my paprikash” part was also off script. When Meg Ryan laughs and looks away, she’s looking at the director for a little help. 😄

I like knowing that an actor is looking at the director. In Taxi Driver, Jody Foster is looking at Martin Scorsese during her breakfast with Travis Bickel, and I don’t think that these things are spoilers, in lieu of the fact that these are very old films. I would LOVE to see you react to that movie, it’s such a classic, and it launched Scorsese’s career.

This is my wife's favorite movie from before she met me, and one of my favorite movies as well. Aside from being such a great movie, we feel a special connection as she and I met in a 'Harry and Sally' style and we're also very much Harry and Sally. We both worked for the same company but as different locations and we first met each other over a 1 week period when I was doing some work at her location. We hit it off but I was in a relationship and she was not looking for a relationship with a guy like me at the time (a few years older, divorced). We saw each other again a few month later but again only for a week. Then we didn't see each other for about 4 years. She went off to college and I went though several relationships. We met again after all that time completely by chance. At that time I was single and she was looking for a relationship so I asked her out. Our first date was in 2004 and we'll be married 18 years this August. I call her 'Sally Albright' all the time because it takes her an hour to order a sandwich (she is never ready to order when the server arrives, she always asks a ton of questions and asked the server what they recommend, she always wants something from the dish on the side, etc...), she is always under a blanket at home or wearing a sweatshirt because she's cold when it's 70 degrees, the parallels are endless. Without going into detail I am very much like 'Harry' (I talk a lot, make jokes, I have an analytical view of people and emotions/feelings and I like to talk about it, etc..) I'm really happy you liked the movie !

I don't like most rom-coms. A lot of them are just formulaic wish-fulfillment fantasies. But I love When Harry Met Sally. The main characters seem like real people, and the romantic parts aren't just designed to appeal to female fantasy. And the heartfelt parts are really touching, while the funny parts are really funny.
Of course men and women can be friends! A lot of my friends are women. Having friends only of the same sex seems very narrow.
Rob Reiner filmed a bunch of interviews of real-life couples with the intent of using them in the movie, but he didn't think they were good enough, so he re-filmed them with the same dialog using professional actors.
How many hairstyles did Meg Ryan go through in this movie?

    "I'll have what she's having."
Fun Fact: Joe is played by Steven Ford, the son of 38th U.S. President Gerald Ford.
Hot Take Fact: The scene where we see all four lead characters talking to each other individually on various telephones took sixty takes to nail.
Location Location Fact: The orgasm scene was filmed at Katz's Deli, an actual restaurant on New York's E. Houston Street. The table at which the scene was filmed now has a "Where Harry Met Sally ...Hope You Have What She Had!" plaque.
Do You Blush Fact: For the infamous orgasm scene, the original script called for Harry and Sally to merely talk about women faking an orgasm, until Meg Ryan suggested that Sally actually fake an orgasm at the table. Director Rob Reiner loved the idea and put it into the script. In an November 2, 2004 interview with NPR, writer Nora Ephron credited Meg Ryan not only with the idea of faking an orgasm in the famous restaurant scene, but also with the idea of setting it in a restaurant in the first place.

Great reaction to WHMS. Personally I think it is the smartest and best rom com ever made. When you have a writer of the calibre of Nora Ephron, and Rob Reiner at his directing peak, I guess you can expect them to raise the bar a bit.
One of the few other RC's that doesn't leave me feeling like I just wasted 2 hours, is Notinghill (1999)
With similarly strong, complex, funny characters and a lot of insight into what drives them.
Another strong, perceptive British, Hugh Grant, film, that I guess you would call a Bromantic comedy is,
    About A Boy (2002)

Me too, As a woman, I have quite a few longstanding male friends. A couple of my closest male friends are gay, so that's obviously a situation where "the sex part" wouldn't get in the way anyway, but I've always had a lot of heterosexual male friends too (okay, there's one who is an ex) and I'd mostly describe my relationship with them as more of a brother-sister thing. I'd be certain they don't have and have never had "designs" on me! So I don' t think it's that uncommon. Totally depends on the people involved.

"When Harry Met Sally" is my favorite RomCom and one of the few that I enjoy. Often RomComs are too formulaic, but this had some real interesting turns. It could also be that the dialog is so much like when I met my wife and I am a bit sentimental. And YES, men and women can just be friends. In fact, I have often had equal numbers of both...which is easy now when I am older and there aren't too many around.

My favorite of the couple interstitials is the story of the two that grew up so close to each other but didn’t meet until in Chicago. Although I also appreciate the knowing looks from the woman who knew the names of all of her husband’s ex-girlfriends.
I love seeing Harry and Sally’s relationship develop over the years, which is what makes it an actually believable pairing, as opposed to other film couples where they get together in a matter of weeks or even days. I especially like seeing them grow to love the other’s quirks-he ends up embracing her food pickiness, but still gets frustrated at how she has to make sure each envelope disappears into the mailbox before adding another.

As to your question of "can men be and women be friends ?"
I would say it really depends on the person. Some people are the wrong people to ask. I think it depends on if promiscuity is a factor. In this case, it was with me. In my younger years, I probably crossed that line with just about every female I was friends with, as well as the people in that person’s circle, and often even with females who were supposed to be just friends. The funny thing is, sexual confidence can get you into a lot of trouble. Once you have it, it attracts any of those looking for it.
My greatest regret is that In hindsight, I learned that I was just trying fill an empty space from childhood, and in the process I missed out on getting to know some wonderful girls/women that in some cases definitely wanted a real relationship but didn’t know how to go about getting access to more than just the physical aspects of getting close to me.
So yeah, I would say it depends on what kind of man you are, vs what kind of me you ought to be.

Just because it isn't romantic love doesn't mean it is still not a valued and good relationship. Of those I mentioned. One is still single, one passed away, and one married someone else. Haha I added the ish because I wasn’t 100% sure if this fell into that category or not lol. Also I had originally planned to watch a few more romantic films and most of them I think were on the fringes of the genre.

It always seemed harder for women to be friends with me, rather than for me to be friends with them. And that's how I always want to meet people, especially romantic interests, by making friends. But if I don't come across with game, most women simply drop interest, like I'm not focussed enough on their agenda. They never seem to want to make friends, as if they don't even like men except for their usability. Could just be me, but it seems a cultural trend.

When I was young (20-40, I am 59 now) I always had in the back of my head that the friendship option existed when I met a man. But for the men it was different. As soon as they knew that I wouldn't jump in bed with them within the next week or so they weren't interessted, just gone. No friendship. But I have had friendships with men but they have started with something mutual, neutral, like studies - never with a romantic interest first. By the way, I'm from Sweden, it can be of importance.
