The Tragic Death of The British Bulldog

- Wrestler Davey Boy Smith, known as The British Bulldog, had a storied career in WWF before the Montreal Screwjob took place in 1997. What isn't really spoke about though, is the downward spiral of The British Bulldog's personal and professional life in the years that followed.
In this video, we will look at the late career of Davey Boy Smith, which turned out to be sad reminder of the tragedies that plagued pro-wrestling during this era.
While looking in-depth at events surrounding the end of Davey Boy Smith's life, we also look at The British Bulldog in WCW, why he got fired from WWF along with The Ultimate Warrior, his return to the WWF during the attitude era in 1999, and how WWE were close to signing The British Bulldog again around the time of his passing.

It is a shame he passed away.. I once sat on a flight for 8 hours next to him in 1st class and he was so nice to me and my wife, he was very soft spoken and polite... We had a great time talking with him an sharing wrestling stories... I even got some work out tips from him... It's sad that steroids cost him his life and at such an early age... RIP Bulldog...
Such a cool story bro
Cool story

Bret showing up to both his funerals and talking good about him after his death was nice to hear. Stories of addiction are heart breaking so it's glad to hear Bret still supported his friend and former brother in law
Bret may have been upset that Davey went back to the WWF barely 2 years after the screw job but he still showed class by attending both funerals
@@iDeathMaximuMIIYou could say he's a real jam-up guy

Very sad. I remember writing to him in 1999 , before Owen died, rooting for his speedy recovery.was surprised he wrote back to say thanks for the support.

Great story. I was a fan when I was a kid.

The bar was called the "Back Alley" and the man was permanently crippled. You are the only person I've ever heard who has mentioned this story. Even here in Calgary people don't remember it. Nice job!
That’s….. slightly terrifying.
Remind me to never piss off a wrestler.
I loved Bulldog. It is so crazy to think that I am the same age that he was when he died. It seems so young, but it is amazing to think of how much he accomplished in such a short amount of time, and sad to think of how much more he could have accomplished. RIP Bulldog
Crazy how much his son looks JUST like him. He was giving so many opportunities to clean up, just really sad. And Warrior has no room to talk about somebody.
Yea but he was in serious pain that probably didn’t go away
The British bulldog was one of my favorite wrestler when I was younger. Rest in peace 🙏💔
Charles Stull omg. He was one of your favorites? That’s amazing!
Nick Capella Kill myself? Arguing? Who’s arguing. I said it’s amazing that’s his fav wrestler.

Brett Hart was a little bitch. They should have put Bull dog over as Wwf champion. Brett was a great wrestler. One of the best actually. But he ain't have as much charisma as Bulldog.
So sad 😞 British Bulldog Davey Rest In Peace ✝️✝️
I met Davey Boy Smith a few times. Once he took the time to sit and talk with me. I really appreciated him doing that. I remember asking Davey about when Ozzy Osbourne accompanied him and Tom Billington at ringside--if he was afraid that Ozzy would bite poor Matilda's head off. He laughed and said, "Actually Ozzy was more nervous than us" and we agreed that it was likely because Ozzy wasn't used to this type of audience. Thanks for this excellent video. Though it was sad, it brought back this great memory--rest in peace Davey Boy Smith.
Someone besides me remembered Matilda
@@gracehawley9628 Actually I saw Matilda from watching VHSs of the British Bulldogs. That's how I got to ask Davey that question.
Davey Boy Smith vs Bret Hart at Summer Slam in 1992 was one of the greatest wrestling matches I witnessed as a kid. I was rooting for Bret (because always rooted for Bret) but as a Brit I was happy for The Bull Dog. Summer Slam 92 was legendary.
Favorite match and wasn't able to watch it till 2000's great performers Hart and Smith
Davey was on drugs by match day, Bret spoke about that some years later.
I had people spoil it for me. I was waiting for event on sky but my bitchy neighbour had a friend who was at Wembley who told her everything. I would not have cared who won (Kayfabe and all that) but still.

Is that a Jack Johnson profile pic? Good taste
You know that Davey Boy is too unstable when Steve Blackman wants to end his matches with him quickly.
It’s sadly Ironic hearing what Warrior was saying , only to pass away too soon himself as well ..
There is definitely a link of wrestlers dying far too young …
Hope you have found some inner peace Davy boy , you were a hero to a lot of youngsters growing up 🇬🇧
R.I.P. British Bulldog.
It’s insane how many people Davey had that truly cared about him yet despite all that he still found solace in drugs.. truly is heart breaking. Despite Warrior inadvertently being one of the reasons for Davey’s back pain came about and probably could’ve worded it better.. he was right, the only person who could’ve saved Davey Boy Smith was Davey Boy Smith.
That wasn't Jim's fault, that was WCW's creative team, and I'm pretty sure Bischoff knew about it. So it's his fault too.
@@jonathancrosby2959 everyone who knew about it yet decided to not inform the talents, had a fault in it.
I dont blame him for the morphine. If he was waking up in the night screaming for 3 weeks steaight the pain must've been excruciating.
My mother’s dream boy, my mother loved him so much she nicknamed our cat bulldog lollll and every time I got beads in my hair she would say my hair was like the bulldog. RIP Davey Boy the British Bulldog. My momma loved u ❤️❤️❤️
Thats cute. I didnt think about the fact that while little kid me was enthralled in the battle, my mom was probably checkin out the physiques on display 😂
Besides those braids in your hair
Much love for you “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith ❤️ I was an obsessed fan of the WWF in the late 80s and early 90s as a young boy. I have many fond memories of my younger brother and me watching WWF events for hours and pretending to be professional wrestlers ourselves. We even went to many live events for pro wrestling. I had the chance to see Davey Boy in person once. He was always one of my favorites. The Ultimate Warrior was always my favorite, but I never got to see him in person. However, I did get to see many of my other favorites during my youth. I got to see Bret “Hitman” Hart; Jake “the Snake” Roberts; The Undertaker; Shawn Michaels; “Hacksaw” Jim Dugan; Big Boss Man; Sting; Flyin’ Brian Pillman and many others. I always liked WCW, but WWF always seemed like it was the best and most polished of all pro wrestling leagues.! I’ve battled addiction to painkillers in my adult life too. I know how hard it is to overcome; especially when your family and personal life is falling apart. You’ll always have a special place in my heart as one of my favorites Davey Boy! I hope you are finally at peace with God in Heaven. I hope to meet you one day when I’m there too.
So sad he died so young 39. At least the ultimate warrior got to live to be 54. RIP Davie One of the greatest of all time he wrestled everybody
Guys that did steroids in the 80s just didnt fare well. Arnold was the one guy that got through it with only 1 heart surgery but still lived.
@@UnlockingYourEnergy Hogan got away with it as well
Strange then how Vince was a major steroid abuser and coke sniffer in the 80s and 90s but he's still around .....
One of the greatest tag teams ever. Watching Davey Boy wrestle was complete joy. Him and Dynamite Kid controlled the WWF tag team division. R.I.P to them both. Y'all left to soon.
I remember when this happened. I was at a library wearing an NWO shirt. Some guy approached me and asked me if I heard about Davey boy Smith. I said no and then he told me that he had passed away and it was announced that day. I went to one of the computers and looked it up and sure enough… RIP Davey.

Davey's drug issues aren't on Bret. Bret did A LOT for him over the years including handing him the best match he ever had.
they never said the drug issues was on Bret they said that Bret did not look after Bulldog in wcw in 97-99 if he did he would never have been fired by wcw when he was injured (wcw trademark of firing wrestlers when they are injured)

Sad. I liked both Davey and Dynamite Kid as a tag team. They worked great together. They will be missed but not forgotten. Thanks for the memories.
Dynamite kid will be
Most likely the Staph infection weakened his heart causing the heart attack. We lost our son to that same issue, minus the drugs of course.
Jeff sorry too hear about your son. I had the same thing happen too me. Now I've got two steel rod's running along my spine, like splint's. I'm lucky i can walk. like Davey Boy Smith., I kept saying my back hurts big time. They kept saying, it's probably a stretched muscles etc. then about a week or so later, I couldn't walk, after all the test I went through. They put me straight into surgery. 13 hours later. I'm put into a hospital spinal rehabilitation section, for 7 month's learning too walk again. I too have trouble with the pain pills, now. If only Doctors picked, it up earlier. ó
I had staph and it takes about two to three weeks to get into your bloodstream. When I went to the hospital I had mine for a week and 3 days but I found I had staph. They told me it wasn't in my bloodstream everyday you have to squeeze out the pus and bleach what you use or touch. It was horrible but I found out I was allergic to latex Band-Aids is it kept ripping off my skin one of the worst pains I had.
I grew up loving wrestling in the 80's and 90's.. But the first time i saw Davey Boy Smith I was like damn, This guy right here is Power. That running power slam was Fantastic.
I started lifting weights because I wanted to be built like he was.
RIP Davey Boy and Dynamite Kid.
@JV Harbin Damn Straight !!.
He really didn’t bulk up until he lost Dynamite and had to establish himself as a standout in singles competition where size got you everywhere. Before he became “The British Bulldog”, he was only billed as being 12 pounds bigger than Dynamite.

He looked good with the cornrows
Ugh and the beads 😍😍😍😍
Would love to see you re do this one. You’ve evolved so much and I feel a 2022 remake would be a blast.
He was always one of my favorite wrestlers. This is heart breaking.
The British Bulldogs were one of my favorite tag teams growing up. I liked Davey Boy Smith when wrestled with Camp Cornett, Hart F., and with the late great Owen Hart. It's sad that he couldn't straighten out his life and lived longer.
Warrior was also harsh regarding Hennig’s death. And yet, Warrior himself died at a young age most likely from his past steroid use.
TKD Guy Yes steroid and drugs.
Warrior's father and grandfather died at the exact age he died, all three from heart attacks. Sting confirmed this. It was hereditary. Warrior knew he wasn't making it out of his 50s, his words on Raw the night before were not coincidental.
I mean honestly Warriors was always a hypocrite
A lot of people don’t know that Dynamite and Davy are descended of a family of public executioners - Billington and sons carried out many executions across prisons in the U.K. at the turn of the 20th century, James Billington was said to have had a lifelong fascination with hanging and built a gallows in his back yard and practiced on stray cats and dogs, he had also wrestled in his youth. James died of bronchitis at the age of 54 and one of his sons Tomas died a month later from injuries sustained, after falling through his own trap door. The remaining Billington’s still in hanging suffered from alcoholism and would eventually be put out of business by the more famous Pierrepoint family.
There was also a psychotic bare knuckle fighter in the family called Joe - he was extremely paranoid and violent, he would beat up anyone who dared to walk past his house - this sounds a bit like dynamite to be honest, some stuff is in the genes if you ask me.
RIP Bulldog.
So interesting. It would certainly explain a lot. Really fascinating that, considering Tom's temperament, he's a descendant of lawful executioners.
Im on holiday soon and I bought Dynamite's book. Can't wait to get it started.
Are you saying it's like a curse?
So a family of sociopaths then?!

drug addiction is genetic. it would have come out some other way.
how can you say that when he had already been doing crack long before that? He obviously was no stranger to drugs before that incident, and no, there's no such thing as a casual crack smoker LOL
More like it worsened
He already had a blatant drug issue for years prior

These wrestling stories are so sad
Hopefully the new wrestlers stories wont be as aweful, now that we are aways from the steroid/painkiller era and all. But recalling davey boy, guerrero, benoit, chyna so many great wrestlers dead from drug and steroid abuse damn these were dark days.
They sort of have to take steroids
Brings back childhood memories. I met a couple of the British Bulldog's relatives in England in the 90s at a popular recreation center in southwest London. Had the greatest Summerslam match with Bret Hart my favorite wrestler of all time. I was surprised he won. R.I.P British Bulldog. He deserves to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. His steriods use should not be an issue especially since Ultimate Warrior was eventually inducted and unfortunately died hours after his Hall of Fame speech. Ultimate Warrior was on steriods too and died of a heart attack too.
Yeah sad..... nearly 20 years now... where does the time go huh???. He was a brilliant talent.. I remember heading to Spain in August 1990 aged 10 in my mother's car going to the Airport.... Davy was on the front cover of the WWF monthly magazine as I read it inside out and over and over again to beat the travelling boredom... 🌴 Thanks for the memories.... and thanks for the upload.

He was the reason l got into wrestling. And was fortunate enough to be at Wembley when he had that epic match with Bret Hart.
Sad video but great memories
Thank you. RIP Davey boy.
Loved that standing drop kick he was one hell of a wrestler.
Truly classless statement by Jim Hellwig, how hypocritical of him to speak against someone for drug use
especially since the dumbass ended up dying the same way
i think warrior always said things to others he was similar to in a ways of kinda yelling at himself, Helwig knew he was dying too, I think that's why he was so cynical.
what do you mean 'classless', they're of the same class idiot that's why Warrior had all the right to speak about it
Paul Blart Mall Cop Warrior. Died of a heart attack not drugs.
@@michaelcookston7795
Warriors heart was massively enlarged from heavy steroid use, also crazy high blood pressure, he was taking an unholy amount of steroids from over 30 years
RIP Davey Boy Smith✨🙏one of my childhood favorites and WM 7 when he beat The Warlord is a classic
It’s real simple....to survive into old age in wrestling at the pro “sports entertainment” level, you have to be a very strong individual psychologically. The temptations and pressures are just too great, weakness in either one will not end well. Sure, that can be extrapolated into life in general really, but the pressure cooker that comes with fame under these circumstances (especially in something where your physical condition is the centerpiece of the profit margin both individually and as a component of a corporation) is far greater than the average. DaveyBoy might have been successful in many things in life, but the timing of a few unfortunate events and the environment of those events eventually wore him down and influenced his decisions.
He was my favourite wrestler as kid. I'm 36 now. I can't believe he was only 3 years older than what I am now when he died. So young

i mean he main evented the 2nd biggest pay per view wwf had in 92 summerslam and went over (he was on a bender the entire weekend of the event and couldn't remember the spots he and bret had planned)
he was in the main event scene in wcw vs Vader until he put a guy in a comma in bar
not to mention how many times he and dynamite were tag team champs
he ruined is own push by not being able to control his demons. of course he wasn't alone in having demons but his played a massive role in being a detriment to his ability to perform

I hate how ppl like Brett and warrior both shot on Davey by talking about the drug issue when they always forget to mention or gloss over the damage that was done to his back and the pain he was in
To be fair he had a problem with them before. The injury just made it worst.
But yeah Warrior was a hypocrite there.
Davey Boy Smith and the Ultimate Warrior bought anabolic steroids from the same dealers, and ironically, it was the hidden trapdoor (for the Ultimate Warrior) at Fall Brawl 1998, that Davey injured his back on.
Didn't he know there was one? How come he was the only one taking 2 bumps on that door? It was obviously there for the whole damn PPV.
@@weworldwide1348 So u think he deliberately landed on the trapdoor twice, hard enough to crack a vertebra in his spine? Seems unlikely to me....

I grew up with bulldog and I remember when Angle started to gain popularity thinking that Bulldog should be in that spot. I think Bret is right and that British Bulldog could have been what Angle became had he not had the serious addiction issues. Their body type and look were so similar and with Kurt's actual wrestling background and submissions style they could've faced each other without being clones. I've always wondered what must go through the genius minds of those who decide to mess with professional wrestlers at bars. What on earth would possess someone to make an advance towards Davey Boy's wife? Dude was built like a brick shithouse. "Real" fighter or not.
I think Big Show also had problems with a guy at a bar and Show knocked him out. Guy tried to sue him afterwards.
Of all people... The Big Show...
@@WrestlingBios I remember that. There was a video of the incident. It was back in his WCW days when he was in his prime. Show threw a mean punch, too. Very quick for his size, obviously. Freak athlete. Remember how he used to do drop kicks off the top rope and stuff? About killed the dude LOL
From what I've understood DBS actually put the guy in a more or less 'legit' submission hold which rendered him helpless, possibly semi-conscious and then he fell with serious consequences a little bit like Hulk Hogan choking out the tv presenter on television a long time ago. Back in the day pro-wrestlers would learn many kinds of holds and moves; some of them purely aesthetic and dependent on cooperation and some of them combat oriented.
