Hi everyone. In this video I share my thoughts, including demos of a few pastel toned branded sets, namely the Holbein, Astra Pastelowe and the 80 Brutfuner pencils.
I think I filmed this on 5th July so just getting it out to you guys now as I fell ill, definitely recovering now and a huge thank you to all your lovely get well messages and comments. x
As always, thanks for watching!

I think that a lot of people have forgotten just how many pastel colours there are in the Irojiten pencils. They were all the rage a few years ago but are hardly mentioned now. But they have a lovely range of pastel and muted shades.
I think the Astral pencils look good. Great price.
Thanks Sue. I’m not sure but I haven’t purchased the Irojitans because I’ve heard that they are a very hard pencil so might not suit me. I do like Polychromos because of how they lay down even though they are a harder pencil. Maybe I should try some open stock if they are available.
@@ColouringwithK They are hard. They don't like Johanna's paper very much. I made the comment only because I think people have forgotten them, they perhaps have them in their stash and have forgotten the pastel and muted shades in the sets. I do really like them, but you have to find the right paper. Not an easy pencil to use.
I don't think that I've heard of those ones. I looked them up, and added them to my Amazon wishlist.
Very nice review. The other set of pencils that I own that have great pastels in them is the Black Widow / Monarch sets. They have some unique colours although still a budget to mid-range pencil.
Have a lovely evening,
Easter
Yes, I definitely agree. The Monarch set has some nice pastel colours
Based on your end results on the bees here I think I actually prefer the pastelowes the most of the three. I thought they gave the clearest nicest finished product. I’ve seen other demos of the Holbein on other channels and I just don’t care for the end results. They look kinda milky and muddy to me but that’s just my opinion. I hope you are feeling better and are taking good care of yourself. Thanks for the video it was quite informative.
Yes, I think thats an accurate summary. The paper will have an influence too but yes, the Pastelowes appeared to have ‘the edge’ over the other two. Thanks for watching Heather.
I agree the Holbeins were so pigmented they fog the lines significantly. At least for coloring books it's an issue.
Thank you, K! I just purchased the 80 Bruts along with the square Marco pastel colors a few days ago. Hope they get here soon!!
I hope so too and have fun with them when they arrive!
Fantastic comparison, thanks so much. Hope you're feeling better 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Thank you for doing this, K! Hope you're feeling better - make sure to rest and get well soon!
You’re very welcome, thank you for your lovely comment and hope you’re okay too!
I purchased the 150 Holbein set of pastel pencils. They were expensive, but they are so beautiful. I don’t use them often but I do love them.
I totally agree, they are beautiful pencils
Congratulations on hitting 5K subscribers very much deserved. I love all the videos you post. I almost brought this set of pencils. I do own Holbeins and many other brands too so going to make good use of the ones I already own before buying more (famous last words) 😂 💕✨
Thank you so much Helina! I always say those famous words and then next minute you know I’ve purchased another set!!
My Pastelowes should be waiting for me at my home when we get back from our road trip and I'm super excited!!!!! Thanks for the share K I have enjoyed watching and it helps the miles go by too. I so hope you feel better quickly!!! Prayers and hugs 🤗
Have fun with the pencils, I hope you really enjoy them. The road trip sounds awesome. Thank you so much for your prayers and kindness. Take care x
The was wonderful K! So glad to see you back. Hope you are resting and being gentle with yourself! My pastalones arrived yesterday! So excited to see you work with all three sets! I have also fallen in love with the spectrum noir color soft pencils! But today I am using Black Widows. Please take good care!(:
Thanks so much Beth! I’ve not tried the spectrum noir pencils but I have the Black widow ones and they’re awesome x
Thank you very much for this, I have the Pastelowe pencil set too and I am very happy with them. Have a really nice week, greetings Jessica 🥰💜
Thank you! You too!
Hi K
I hope you are resting and taking good care of yourself. As my best friend in Sweden tells me daily. Be kind to yourself. 😊
I enjoyed the video K. It helps me to see the differences and how they look and I know you describe the feeling of how they lay down when you color. Every little bit teaches me.
One day I will color and stop collecting.🤣🤣🤣🤣
I do have the Pastelowes and I think the colors are beautiful and I have the square Brutfuners. I swatched them. 😁
I did get the Brutfuner 520 count.
I just felt I would kick myself if I didn't. I know, it's a lot of pencils.
I have no regrets. It has every color you can think of. My granddaughter is 12. She loves coloring with her pencils and she swatches her pencils. It just makes me smile. Her pictures are beautiful. She has OCD and a secondary anxiety disorder. She can't take meds. Organizing is relaxing to her. 😊 She keeps telling me she will help me Swatch the 520 Brutfuner which translates to "Memaw, can I Swatch them for you"
I am praying daily for you to feel strong and healthy K. Thank you for the video. Have a great week. Many Blessings. Hugs 😊❤
Hi Linda. I don’t know what I’d do with a 520 set of pencils, that is just a crazy number of pencils - I would get so confused! Gosh - they would take forever to swatch but at least you have a volunteer! Thank you so much for your prayers, I really appreciate it. Take care and best wishes x
@@ColouringwithK Thank you K. She's probably getting them and a Swatch book for Christmas. Madison is 12 going on 17. It would thrill her. She was one of the students picked by her school to take college courses at our college this summer. I have to find things to keep her mind busy. She loves coloring. Many Blessing 😊❤
I enjoyed your comparisons... Thank you for this
Thanks very much!
I saw a comparison of the Pastelowe and Holibein pencils that showed that the colours are pretty much identical, although the Holbeins are obviously a better quality pencil. And as I am just using them in colouring books and not doing any actual art pieces with them, I am perfectly happy with the Pastelowes.
I’m pleased to hear that - thanks!
Oooo I want to watch this. I’m working silly hours this week as my biggest project, that’s been going for over a year, went live on Monday so I’m behind with youtube watching
Oh I hope you do get a chance to catch up with the videos but thanks for dropping a comment by. Hope your project is going really well and you get some more time to play with all your colouring stuff!
@@ColouringwithK watched the rest of the video this morning, excellent comparison K! The Pastelowes really did well. Which saves me having to buy Holbeins! Thanks for doing this ❤️
Thank you for sharing your information!!! ♥️♥️♥️
You are so welcome!
I have the pastelowe pencils. Love them use them together with my polychromos and arteza expert. I did a complete picture with them in Luna from Maria Trolle. They are amazing on that paper
I must try them in the Maria Trolle books, thanks for letting me know.
Great video. I enjoyed all the information you shared on the different pencils. I have a pastel set of Holbein but it only has twelve pencils. I do love them. My problem is that I am stuck on Prismacolors. I have many different sets of pencils but cannot get myself to use them. Does anyone else have this problem? I hope you are feeling better. Take care, you are in by my prayers.😘
Thank you so much Mary. I was like that at first but then as I started working with different pencils, I enjoyed ‘getting to know them’. Now I like different pencils for different reasons, depending on my mood and what I feel like that day! Take care x
That is because Prismas are awesome. They have become the "brand to hate" somehow these days but they are superior to so many, and don't break the bank, and have open stock available practically everywhere (in the US, I've heard they are harder to find in the UK). They are vibrant, pigmented, smooth, fast, blend like a dream, have a gorgeous color selection (including pastels), and work on any paper. They have the best white and the best blender regardless of what other brand you are using. I've tried (wasted money on) a lot of other brands side by side and am not only disappointed but have to "fix" the result with my Prismas. I've been told they went through a rough patch about a decade ago which apparently they will never be forgiven for...but I've got new ones that are exactly the same in performance as the ones I had 20 years ago. Yeah, you might get a dud now and then but you can just buy a single pencil replacement for it... and you do have to treat them right and sharpen them properly... but they give you so much more in return.
Ohh they must have put the postage up on the Pastelowes, it was only £1.80 when I got mine from Emma’s link. I ended up with 2 sets of £26.80 all in 🤫😂.
Need to come back and watch the rest of this video later 😘
The postage price up went up quite high as I was quite late to the party with these pencils and then finally gave in and ended up buying them. I’m looking forward to your next video, when you get the chance!
@@ColouringwithK ah that’s a shame. Makes sense though as I had no idea how they were sending them all the way from Poland for £1.80. Great pencils though.
I get silly happy when a set I have is reviewed, I have the Pastelowe shipped all the way from Germany to Mexico 🤣! I really don’t know what to do with them. Many people have reviewed them but I’ve never seen anyone coloring with them… 🤔
I’m absolutely done with budget pencils, I’m not very talented so I need all the help I can get from my supplies. I’ve been trying to use budget pencils for coloring skin, I cannot get them to blend, any of them!
Budget pencils will be used for large backgrounds.
Check out Lucy Just Adds Colour for a color along with Astra Pastelowe Pencils :)
@@ewao3489 I will! Thank you for the tip!
I use the Pastelowe for parts of a picture rather than for the whole thing and particularly as a contrast to ‘stronger’ colours. Thanks for watching!
Oooh I love how you have your numbers inside the case written - that makes it so much easier to put back! Genious. I still need to integrate my pastels into the Holbeins. I have the Pastelowe, but I'm not really the biggest fan. Maybe I got a bad batch? Yes, Holbeins have been heavily criticized by a lot of artist as of late because of their lightfast testing (especially for their cost ouch). Felissimo has a few very pretty pastel sets that I love, but there is no easy way to get those.
Hi there, yes absolutely - the numbers on the cases is really helpful but when they release more colours of the same pencil eg Black widow with the Monarch pencils, I had to move them into a bigger case so I have a case with numbers on that I just use as a spare now for putting in colours I’m currently using on a page!
@@ColouringwithK ah yes if they expand and shift the order that would make it hard. But still a great idea. I constantly put mine back in the wrong order. Especially my lumis lol
@@ColorfullyOptimistic I have put a piece of washi tape across the top of my cases and wrote the pencil numbers on the tape instead of directly on the case. I ran into the same problem of getting new pencils and needing to rearrange, but couldn’t figure out a way to get off the numbers I’d marked directly onto the case. Lol. Maybe it’s a tip you hadn’t thought of, so I hope it helps. (I looked and found a medium sticky tape, one that doesn’t leave sticky residue on the case but also won’t come off very easily when sliding the pencils in and out over it)
@@NoDontLikeIt that's actually a good idea too.
Completed watching this today these pencils are amazing they not available in south africa but we do have budget pencils similar to these I think you inspired me to do such a video with south african colour pencils or at least thee ones available here keep well and hope you get better soon
Thanks so much, yes go for it - it would be an interesting watch!
Everyone talks about the Pastelowes.. does the brand make regular spectrum pencils?
I’m not sure, sorry
The 50 pastel bruntfuner are way nicer than their 80 pack. Not the same pencil
That’s good to know!
Wanted astra coz they’re budget w/ shipping coz & tax not sure..so I ended up getting Holbein pastels 50 for $86, even w disc it’s steep 🤑
It is steep, but you’ll enjoy the Holbeins - have fun!
