I wasn't happy with the previous iteration of this monitor - though my workspace can't utilize 32" anyway - but in both SDR and HDR on my Dell UP2718Q displays, this video is overexposed and clipping in the whites, even on Linus's face, heh
Same here on my PD2700U. Appears to me as if a few things which in the real world wouldn't reach 350 nits are at that brightness level in this video on chrome (win10), resulting in a blown-out image. I mean... is the majority of linus' face supposed to have an intensity only the sun would've in other HDR video's? I want to think it's same to assume not :) Even after adjusting the contrast down to 35 instead of the 50 i'd leave it at while gaming it generally appears over-exposed. If i try using Edge instead of chrome however, things appear to be just fine. While the windows SDR-slider doesn't effect the chrome window (just like it doesn't and shouldn't for Edge)... implying Win10 *is* trying to render it in WCG/HDR... I honestly wish i had any idea how to figure out the data the browser is trying to shove towards the display and i.e. transfer them into a luminance heatmap, i've seen someone do something like that in the past to some game footage, but am drawing blanks on replicating such an approach for diagnosing problems like these. Strangely enough Edge does appear to do a far better job then chrome does with this specific video (i can leave my settings to the usual ones i use), so i'm guessing chrome is for some reason in the wrong here... Can confirm. My own HDR movies with Madvr were rendered correctly but this video is one hell of a radiated zone. Not sure if it's the video or Chrome. On my phone app (SDR) the color is correct.
The fact that they make HDR content without even uploading in 60FPS is baffling to me. Even if they don't want to record at 60FPS, because lighting or whatever, just having the animations, panning shots(played back at 2x speed) and whatnot at 60FPS would be a much greater quality improvement for everyone than HDR is for the few people who have compatible displays imo.
@@startedtech Got to agree, looks like they've been up-scaled from 24 to 30 fps. 30FPS isn't a bad thing for 4K at all but it seems the frame rate used on the camera for Linus is at a more cinematic 24 which looks choppy AF when put together with the rest of the footage.
I haven't watch a lot of HDR content on UA-cam, so I was wondering if it was the platform causing that, or my TV/UA-cam app. Although you're right, the B-roll looked fine. Also I would say the colors on static images/the intro animation didn't look right on my TV as well
hey Linus, I don't wanna sound like a nitpicker but the video honestly looks very bright and overly saturated on my monitor, it just looks very weird on my display for some reason, it might be something to do with my BenQ EX3501R or my settings. love the videos and have been a longtime lover of your content. keep up your amazing work!

Looks very natural on my LG C9. Edit: tried it on my 27GL850 with chrome and it's awful, seems like some tonemapping is completely broken somewhere in the display chain.
@@mpcrt6512 HDR is not really about color, it's mainly about contrast. There is no black or white at all in his video. It becomes dark grey or light grey on an SDR screen.
I had to enable the setting on my monitor to crank up HDMI black levels to make it more saturated. But, damn, the whites on the screenshots look so dull and grey! Also the animated subscribe button is a so washed out red, that I can't even call it red anymore.
To me it looks a bit more grainy. Or maybe I didn't notice it in their videos before. I can see it when they zoom in on Linus more, the background behind him gets grainy. Or it's maybe something I didn't notice before.
Was about to comment. It seems like they recorded Linus at 24 FPS and encoded in 30 FPS, so the parts with Linus have duplicating frames, making it look stuttery as fuck.
It looks good on an HDR monitor. His face isn't clipping in HDR. I watched this on my iPhone and it looked pretty bad and hooked it up to my HDR display and looks great!
Looks great on a 2019 Oled congrats but the palette color is oversaturated with to much warm red toned colors. The Color in this video it's not right and i tested this video on different monitors btw
LED IPS here. I allways notice some weird blur on linus tech tips vídeos and I don't know what it is, but probably something to do with skin tones and focus range. When he points his hand like 20 cm closer to the lens it instantly defocus and it's super nausiating.
Yeah, low FPS, and a warm, washed out grade. Watching on a note 9, which usually is great for HDR. I hope this wasn't rushed, and was checked on devices beforehand, and it's just YT being YT.
@@4lc441 That's not a valid excuse for not including one though monitors need stand and even a basic one should be included in the box. Much like CPU's and stock coolers. The minority will use them, but that's not a reason to remove it.
OMG on the phone the screen automatically goes full brightness that is insanely bright Edit: it is also lagging my phone like crazy Edit 2: did anyone else feel like the frame rate was really low in the video or is it just me?
The video was probably not compressed properly. In order for an HDR display to use the HDR range in a video, the video file has to hold extra information for the extra range of colors and brightness. It is probably lagging because your phone wasn't programmed to take the extra data, was designed only to take properly optimized video, or was not built with a powerful enough or correct hardware system to take it. It is like running RTX on a GTX card. It might also be your data plan. HDR need more bandwidth to stream.
@@NoobNoobNews the video wasnt compress properly, it was stuttery on desktop when other HDR vids dont stutter. this was also their first HDR vid so i will expect it to get better over time.
Hating this hdr thing. The screen on the s10 automatically skyrockets at times and is blinding me. Hate that this kind of autobrightneds cannot be disabled
Yeah, I was wondering why my Pixel 3's colours were extremely dull and shit. It's lagging my phone too ngl. YT needs an option to disable, or LTT shouldn't make videos in HDR until YT gets it shit together.
I watched this on my OnePlus 7T Pro and was like: WOW, okay, HDR does make a huge difference. In like... The first 2 seconds. Jesus, this looks amazing.
The b-roll looks fantastic, but your skin tone in the talking head portion is very pink and reflect-ey and your hair light makes your head super shiny lol. Looks great on my pro display XDR though haha Also, love that new intro!
Same... Im getting weird a weird slowdown watching it in 1080p HDR on a Galaxy S9 (stats for nerds shows its not dropped frames either). Wonder if it's UA-cam's own compression/render engine, as LTT probably have a master upload in 4k which it's then downsampling for lower resolutions?

So it wasn't just my imagination that the video seem weird?
@@hubertnnn It is. I mean, when your mastering display shows white as pink in the video, you know someone screwed up.
@@MrShadowmaster00 Yeah someone suggested the best results were at max brightness.
As my retinas melted I contemplated why I followed that advice 😅

*_Yikes the fingerprints_*
There's something odd with this video's frame rate...
Same here.
Thought it was just my eyes!
Same
It's fine. It's just a connection issue.
It felt kinda choppy at the beginning but smoothed out to the end.
I also noticed better/different colors than usual (watched it on my oneplus 5t)
As someone watching this in HDR its seems way to saturated than other HDR content. Is this just me?
Absolutely. On HDR monitor looks oversaturated. I guess they're still learning how to master it properly, or maybe they went overboard trying to showcase the HDR
Watch it in Edge. Chrome is overexposing hdr.
@@Chopper153 chrome is a b*tch when it comes to hdr. I just can't seem to set it up right and because of that UA-cam videos in HDR look awfully and blown out. Edge manages just fine!
That said, I'm watching this video on my Galaxy Note 9 and it's gorgeous, although it is burning my eyes out if my skull with the brightness (that's a good thing by the way).
@@TheGroundedCoffee i tough because mine warent IPS so it deosnt look that good.. and compared to my OnePlus 7 pro.. i was like.. damn my monitor suck... lol
Can confirm. My own HDR movies with Madvr were rendered correctly but this video is one hell of a radiated zone. Not sure if it's the video or Chrome. On my phone app (SDR) the color is correct.
Why is the framerate in some of the shots with Linus sitting so damn low?
The fact that they make HDR content without even uploading in 60FPS is baffling to me.
Even if they don't want to record at 60FPS, because lighting or whatever, just having the animations, panning shots(played back at 2x speed) and whatnot at 60FPS would be a much greater quality improvement for everyone than HDR is for the few people who have compatible displays imo.
@@knexfan0011 it's not even not being 60FPS, the shots with Linus sitting don't even look like *24* fps. It looks like 18 or something.
Also I would say the colors on static images/the intro animation didn't look right on my TV as well
I am on a 144 hz IPS monitor and this video looks so damn laggy. It is giving me headache.
Watching this on my iPhone 11 Pro screen in hdr was the first time I’ve seen HDR. Holy crap. Beautiful.

hey Linus, I don't wanna sound like a nitpicker but the video honestly looks very bright and overly saturated on my monitor, it just looks very weird on my display for some reason, it might be something to do with my BenQ EX3501R or my settings. love the videos and have been a longtime lover of your content. keep up your amazing work!
its overly saturated here too
hdr 10 doesnt really look good and isnt true hdr, only that the monitor can interpret an hdr signal. id leave it off.
it's definitely not just you.
there is a note to change a chrome setting in the video description but since I don't have an HDR monitor, it makes everything just look horrendous.
same on my PG278Q. looks very bright almost like the whites are bleaching out the detail
Looks very natural on my LG C9.
Edit: tried it on my 27GL850 with chrome and it's awful, seems like some tonemapping is completely broken somewhere in the display chain.
6:00 when LTT uses the light intro instead of the dark intro when I'm watching videos in a OLED phone at bed.
Idk, I've hung out with some people, and they definitely had a hard time staying quiet after blasting pure white.
Watching this on an HDR display. This is amazing.
I feel like the footage of Linus is lagging. Definitely less than 30 fps. All other cuts look smooth.
yep
The scenes with Linus were unfortunately 24fps telecine'd to 30fps.
So there's a repeating frame every 4th-5th frame.
People with HDR displays: WOW it looks so good!
Remaining 99% of viewers: *gets most washed out LTT video to date*
Uhhhh, no ? Colours look great to me. Looks more saturated than normal tbh.
Watched simultaneously on an iPhone XS and a laptop, and yeah, the latter looked VERY dull.
@@mpcrt6512 HDR is not really about color, it's mainly about contrast. There is no black or white at all in his video. It becomes dark grey or light grey on an SDR screen.
@@lidorori I have hdr monitor, and hdr TV, and I can say that my monitor is not hdr display, and on tv this video looked great.
I had to enable the setting on my monitor to crank up HDMI black levels to make it more saturated. But, damn, the whites on the screenshots look so dull and grey! Also the animated subscribe button is a so washed out red, that I can't even call it red anymore.
Is it just me or does the A-Roll actually look like 15-20fps as opposed to the normal 24?
Definitely not you, it feels really stuttery.
Yep I noticed the framerate before I even realised it was hdr
Tbh I don’t really like 24fps that much
To me it looks a bit more grainy. Or maybe I didn't notice it in their videos before. I can see it when they zoom in on Linus more, the background behind him gets grainy. Or it's maybe something I didn't notice before.
Omg i thought my phone stutter at 1440HDR.
Insane quality on that panel. it looks surreal in the video even.
When I tapped in this video I thought I left my phone brightness all the way up and I got damn near blinded
Anyone else think the framerate looks weird when Linus is on screen? I'm watching on an LG C9.
PATHETIC
watching on a c9 too, there is a weird looking square, and colors are completely wack.. not sure if its me or this vid
Was about to comment. It seems like they recorded Linus at 24 FPS and encoded in 30 FPS, so the parts with Linus have duplicating frames, making it look stuttery as fuck.
The scenes with Linus were unfortunately 24fps telecine'd to 30fps.
So there's a repeating frame every 4th-5th frame.
Indeed, but only in the last half of the vid 4 me, at least.

LMG: "Right now you're watching the very first LTT video in HDR."
Me: "But why does it look like it was colourgraded on a potato?"

Looks great on a 2019 Oled congrats but the palette color is oversaturated with to much warm red toned colors. The Color in this video it's not right and i tested this video on different monitors btw
Yea there is some weird color errors, (oled)
at my LG c9 too (and low frame rate)
LED IPS here. I allways notice some weird blur on linus tech tips vídeos and I don't know what it is, but probably something to do with skin tones and focus range. When he points his hand like 20 cm closer to the lens it instantly defocus and it's super nausiating.
Yeah I also noticed it to be shifted towards red/orange.
Both on my pc Samsung hdr monitor and my phone mi10 pro
Yeah, low FPS, and a warm, washed out grade. Watching on a note 9, which usually is great for HDR. I hope this wasn't rushed, and was checked on devices beforehand, and it's just YT being YT.

LTT has probably spent hours over the last year raging about blooming, but now it’s suddenly fine... wow
I mean, if you come to learn that it likely isn't going to completely go away anytime soon...
well, even if its just one led open, as long as the light can reflect off something, air, your eyes, and glass, there will be blooming.
OMG on the phone the screen automatically goes full brightness that is insanely bright
Edit: it is also lagging my phone like crazy
Edit 2: did anyone else feel like the frame rate was really low in the video or is it just me?
The video was probably not compressed properly. In order for an HDR display to use the HDR range in a video, the video file has to hold extra information for the extra range of colors and brightness. It is probably lagging because your phone wasn't programmed to take the extra data, was designed only to take properly optimized video, or was not built with a powerful enough or correct hardware system to take it. It is like running RTX on a GTX card.
It might also be your data plan. HDR need more bandwidth to stream.
@@NoobNoobNews yeah I have a SD 670 so it definitely isn't a high end chip
@@NoobNoobNews I was using internet not data though
@@NoobNoobNews the video wasnt compress properly, it was stuttery on desktop when other HDR vids dont stutter. this was also their first HDR vid so i will expect it to get better over time.

HDR is a bit of a gimmick I am convinced.

The clips look really choppy, and it looks pretty ugly on my SDR phone screen
